Aloha Friday! For this week’s seed snapshot, we will be highlighting Brighamia rockii, also known as Pua ‘ala. It is in the Campanulaceae, or bellflower family. 🌱 ••• Brighamia rockii is endemic to the Hawaiian islands. Though it historically had populations on Lānaʻi and Maui, it can now only be found on Molokaʻi 🏝️Some of its threats include competition with alien invasive plants, consumption by feral ungulates and rats, degradation of habitat and climate change 🌿🐐🦌🌎🌡️It is federally listed as endangered and is a target species of the Plant Extinction Prevention Program (PEPP) ⚠️🌱 ••• Over the last year, specialists from PEPP and the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) worked together to explore the tallest sea cliffs in the world on Molokaʻi ⛰️🌊New drone technology is providing a glimpse of areas that are otherwise inaccessible to botanists. While other populations of Brighamia rockii have been lost to browsing by goats and deer, they are kept out of these places by the steep cliffs. Images from the drones revealed several small keiki plants that had never been seen before! 🌱 ••• In the Seed Lab, we currently have over 17,000 seeds of Brighamia rockii in storage. Olopua (Nestegis sandwicensis), our beloved endemic olive ♡ The hardwood of this tree has long been used for crafting various items, from hale pou (posts) to ʻōʻō to ihe (spears) and many others. Like many of our endemic species, olopua has suffered the effects of colonization through habitat loss, competition with invasive species, and wildfires. Rarely is their wood enjoyed by humans as it once was. ○ Colonial exploitation the world over threatens all life. My heart aches as the massacre in Palestine continues, sanctioned by world leaders of so many countries, paid for with our own tax dollars. The olive has long been a symbol of peace, and the fruits of these trees are vital crop for thousands of farmers in Palestine. There have been numerous situations where Israeli settlers have purposely destroyed olive trees, knowing that this spells ruin for families who rely on them, who love them and care for them in reciprocal exchange. ○ I recently gathered leaves from this olopua, whom I have been friends with for the past seven years. I laid them across my altar with other earthly objects that sing songs of life and hope to my heart. I lit a candle and prayed for peace. As of 2014, the naturally occurring vegetation in Honuaʻula is dominated by non-native grasses and weeds, kiawe (Prosopis pallid), koa haole (Leucaena glauca), and klu (Acacia farnesiana) interspersed with small stands of wiliwili, ʻaʻaliʻi, ʻilima (Sidafallax), and ʻuhaloa (Waltheria indica). Our research (2022) affirmed the presence of these species above and additional findings of native species such as ʻakoko (Euphorbia cf. celastroides), ʻape (Alocasia macrorrhiza), ʻāheahea (Chenopodium oahuense), niu (Cocos nucifera), naio (Myoporum sandwicense), kuluʻī (Nototrichium cf. sandwicense), and kōpiko (cf. Psychotria sp.). Hāpuʻu or Cibotium menziesii is a native tree fern found in Hawaii. It is one of more than 800 species of tree ferns and like its other species, it descends from prehistoric vegetation.
