Sometimes there is one reason to be happy, other times there are two but yesterday, I had a million. I am always ready to go to lengths to see Tomo or Oz or Will or Shawn play, individually, regardless of the band. I got to see all these legends on the same stage! Plus, I was hanging out with some of my oldest friends, kindergarten friends. And the show was at one of my favorite venues, a venue we’ve frequented over the years. I never thought I’ll get to see Tomo play, now that I live across the pond. What a treat it was - he sounded almost like a slide player. I’ve never seen Jeff Beck play but I guess it must be something similar. The mellow parts were overflowing with sweetness, such a treat! It’s always an honor to see the rest of the guys - Oz, Will and Shawn are absolutely next level. In the third slide, taken on Jan 3rd 2021, you can hear (through my VERY squeaky voice 😅) the first time I came up with the chord progression and some of the lyrics. I have literally hundreds of videos on my phone of me playing riffs with shitty lyrics, 99% of which will never be seen by anyone. Then of the 1% that do, you get to hear a fully finished product. You don’t hear how terrible it starts, how great the motivation is in the beginning, how it gets shelved for years at a time, and then finally re-birthed. Minami Deutsch / 南ドイツ Played Elsewhere last night in Brooklyn, opening for Earthless. Minami Deutsch combines the formality, precision, and minimalism with psychedelic undertones. They create beautiful grooves that grow, and bloom like flowers. They are part of the Guruguru Brain record label, which is a project of the incredible Japanese psych band Kikagaku Moyo / 幾何学模様. Minami Deutsch is in their 10th year together, and self describes as "Repetition freaks", who heavily listen to minimal techno. In that psyche, the band revolves around the bassist and drummer, with the 2 guitarists adding flavor. The group recently released the single “The Dawn of Man” from their forthcoming second LP, From Whence They Came, due on June 21st. The new single, “The Dawn of Man,” gives us a taste of what King Bastard’s new album has in store for us in June. The track is heavier than ever, featuring guttural vocals that I don’t recall as much from their debut, lethal riffs, and walls of sound that take no prisoners. This isn’t for the faint of heart.
