My 32-year-old dracaena is starting to bloom for the second time. The first time I saw these floral clusters, I felt excited. But now, I know better, & I am filled with a stomach-wrenching dread. The blooms open at night, & at first the fragrance is innocuous enough: sweet. Lily-like. Within hours, the smell fills the entire house. By the next day, anyone in the room worries that there may be no oxygen left, & that as one crawls to the door, any door, or struggles to open a window, any window, that the last thing one will breathe before choking will be the probably-toxic fumes of this accursed plant. We have many Virginia Opossums in care right now. This patient is in treatment for a large wound on his hip. He is a particularly robust handsome male, weighing in at nearly 5 kilograms (11 pounds)! Check out the yellow patch on his chest as well (note, he was sedated in this image for our and his safety during this exam). Male opossums have a scent gland on their chest that exudes a greasy, musky smell that allows them to communicate on a chemical level with other opossums. We are impressed regarding his scent gland patch!
