This is a blue rock thrush. They are native to Europe and Asia. I happened to catch this on the Oregon Coast while I was photographing waterfalls this past weekend. This has caused quite a stir in the #birding community, as this is an extraordinarily rare sighting in North America, with only one other potential sighting in 1997. My story has appeared on the @koin6 website, and I have been writing reports and accounts of my encounter with this bird for the relevant birding organizations. The Peruvian Plantcutter is such an interesting bird. Only about 700 of these birds are left in the wild, 3% of its habitat is left. Peru, April 2024. It has a short, conical bill like a Northern Cardinal's, but with an important addition — serrated edges. These tooth-like ridges allow the plantcutter to chew vegetation into a pulp before swallowing, which is something quite rare in the bird world. The Peruvian Plantcutter can be identified by its peculiar, mechanical-sounding call, which some people compare to a squeaking door or a distant sheep. It is endemic to Peru, endangered and threatened by widespread habitat loss; only three percent of its remaining habitat. #wildlifephotography #birds #animal #rarebird #peru #plantcutter

Alright, so some birds are exciting because they're beautiful, some are interesting because of some unique behavior, and some are interesting because they popped up in a place where people don't usually get to see them. I’ve got plenty of photos to post from my trip to Gibraltar and Southern Spain, but I thought I’d start off with this funky fella! We travelled a short distance to La Barca de Vejer to see the critically endangered Bald Ibis. A short colony were nesting on rocky cliffs, right next to a main road and cafe! This is a species which used to be relatively widespread, but unfortunately its gradually become extinct in its historical distribution ranges. A reintroduction project was set up to raise birds in captivity and release them into the wild, to encourage a population to build. This site is only one of the two sites were they northern Bald Ibis breed in Europe! I came and I saw. Swainson's Warbler. I took a biking day of birding, biked around the parts of Brooklyn where some good birds were. The Swainson's was my first stop, and it was right there at the coordinates shatred by other birders. Compared the the Swainson's that showed up a few years back in Prospect, this one was a treat. VERY easy viewing, didn't even need binoculars, almost too easy, even. (2 photos). I’ve only had the opportunity to go looking for migrating song birds once so far. It was a great walk tho! I got my latest lifer, the Prairie Warbler, and, I also captured my best images so far of a Summer Tanager. A beautiful pair was flying around in the trees and were very cooperative. One of the three truly red birds I’ve ever seen ( Northern Cardinal and Scarlet Tanager being the other 2) and the only completely red bird (males only) in North America, Summer Tanagers return to the US in Spring after Wintering in Mexico, Central, and South America. They are specialist at catching bees and wasps on the wings, while avoiding their stings. I always spend more time at this location than expected I went to Lincoln City Beach to volunteer for beach clean up, and of course I was going to bird afterwards!! First, at Lincoln City Beach then Boiler Bay. Originally, I was going all the way to Newport, but I spent so much time photographing Black Turnstones in Lincoln City then unexpectedly found this Sage Thrasher at Boiler Bay that I ran out of time. Apparently, it had been reported that morning, but I didn't know. I'd only seen a Sage Thrasher once before. It was briefly atop sage in Harney County, so seeing it acting like a Robin in the grass next to the ocean was confusing. At a distance, I thought it was a Pipit. Then, I noticed the crisp streaking and light eye. I narrowed it down to Thrasher or Mockingbird, then realized its tail was too short for Mockingbird and that a young Mockingbird would have spots - not streaks. Initially, I thought it was a lifer. Turns out it wasn't, but it sure felt like seeing something new! It was so exciting, and I took soooo many photos. I struggled to leave because I'd be about to leave, and I'd turn to see the Thrasher begging for its photo to be taken. It seemed to follow me around, run right up to me, and pose for me in really cool spots. Its demeanor and behavior were really cute, especially for a bird with such an intense sounding name! #sagethrasher #rarebird #birding #birdwatching #birdphotography

A true rarity: Pallid Scoops owl. Small, pale gray owl with distinct tufted “horns.” Well camouflaged and rarely seen during the day, when it roosts in groves of trees in relatively open areas such as plantations, oases, and farmland. Similar to European Scops-Owl but with less extensive and simpler patterning: discrete thin black streaks on the back and breast instead of an assortment of blotchy patches and spots. Pallid’s voice is deeper than that of the rather squeaky European Scops. Today I’d like to remind you all of the importance of marshes, swamps, and all the wetlands that are often forgotten in photography in favor of huge mountains and cold glaciers. Although these landscapes are important in their own right, it is from the wetlands that life sprung, and in the wetlands where the balance of the ecosystem is fought for. From an incredible biodiversity (rivaling rain forests and coral reefs) to climate regulation, wetlands are an intrinsic part of our natural world. Swamps, for example, store 30% of the carbon in the world, while only accounting for 5-8% of the land. Due to their diverse plant and insect life, marshes are existentially important to migratory birds, providing a resting spot on their long trek to and from home. On this Earth Day, let’s continuing looking in awe at mountains and glaciers, but let’s not forget that without wetlands, the world would be in trouble, and let’s face, they can be so much fun ! Captain Adam from @calicojackcharters had been telling me that if you want to see a bird of paradise, you have to trek for 2 hours and if you don’t start before 6am you won’t see one. Then if you do find one, it’ll be 20-30 meters up a tree. On day 1 of our amazing trip, one of the indigenous women with us looked up and spotted one merely 8 minutes into a walk. At 8 in the morning. Like 5 meters up in a tree. We weren’t even looking for birds (obviously I was) let alone the bird of paradise. It was a such a great way to start to the trip. The closest I’ve ever gotten to a Pied-billed Grebe. I was looking at a tree in the distance where a lot of egrets of different kinds were perched when suddenly, this little guy glided out from behind some bushes right by the water’s edge. It didn’t stick around long once it noticed me, so I didn’t get a chance to take a shot either more space around it. That said, I love the detail and how serene the water was, allowing for a great reflection. Pied-billed Grebes change bill colors during mating season. The bills turn very white with a black band, as you can see on this photo. They prefer solitude, only seeking a mate during season.
