IT'S PERSONAL We've been posting photos all week from our Doran Memorial Bridge on Interstate 280 field trip all week, and this post will wrap this series. Several friends have reached out to Bobbi and I asking about the scale of this bridge. The bridge deck itself isn't all that long. I'm guessing it's about 1/4 of a mile, or maybe a bit less. I think this photo of a large box truck crossing the bridge is a pretty good reference to judge the scale of the structure, though I would encourage you to visit and see it for yourself. Interstate 280 is always a wonderful drive and the structures below this bridge are so massive and beautifully designed that it feels like you're viewing a gigantic public art installation. Kudos to the brilliant San Francisco Architect, Mario J. Ciampi for his inspired and extraordinary design. This is such a special place, and I'm looking forward to getting back there soon. IT'S PERSONAL These beautiful structures are holding up eight lanes of freeway traffic on Interstate 280, while bridging the San Mateo Creek Overflow from The Crystal Springs Reservoir. The bridge deck itself is understated. It's wide open and floats above the spectacular water and mountain views that surround drivers on this stretch of highway. The scale of the supportive structures below the deck are massive, with the highest of the 4 towers reaching over 250' from the ground to the freeway. It was so unexpected to round a few heavily wooded hillsides on a narrow county road, and suddenly these extraordinary structures came into view. I couldn't believe my eyes. How wonderful. While I was making these photographs, it felt like we were viewing a beautiful public art installation. The infrastructure design and functionality is quietly nestled in a wild environment, and these towers feel like they belong here, as though they are part of the natural landscape. That's Brilliant Environmental Design, Structural Engineering + Construction, and it's all Best of the Best. The Creative Genius who designed this timeless beauty was San Francisco Native + Architect + Urban Planner, Mario J. Ciampi, whose work was primarily focused on Bay Area public projects including Schools, Museums and Transit. There are so many examples of Mario's extraordinary talent displayed all over the San Francisco Bay area. The man is a legend. I'm forever in awe. More coming tomorrow. IT'S PERSONAL Most people don't even realize they are on a bridge while driving on this one. I've driven over it hundreds of times, and never paid much attention. Interstate 280 is a stunningly beautiful drive, and it is always all about the views. The view to the West is Crystal Springs Reservoir and the Watershed. To the East are mostly hillsides covered with native plants and trees. Above you is wide open sky, and it's all gorgeous. I have a feeling that San Francisco Bay Architect, Mario Ciampi wanted drivers to fully experience this glorious environment without distraction. The understated deck design doesn't compete with the views in any way. It only enhances the driving experience. Oh, but then there are hidden treasures underneath this bridge providing all the support for the 8 lane Interstate highway above. After we rounded a curve on a narrow road beneath the bridge, this massive structure unexpectedly presented itself, and as we turned into the space, all four support structures appeared, each looking like giant iconic sculptures nestled into the hillsides, as though they've always been there. Such a brilliant combination of natural beauty and modern infrastructure. I can't wait to get back. More tomorrow... Stay tuned. 👷🌳We’ve been clearing out fallen trees & debris from the #SanMateo Creek and are working closely with the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission, County of San Mateo & Town of Hillsborough on monitoring the impacts of the storm 🌧 and preparing for the incoming ones. While rain is slow today & this weekend, residents along the San Mateo Creek may notice increased flow 💦 as the SFPUC conducts controlled releases of the Crystal Springs Reservoir to prepare for the next series of storms. Flooding is not expected this weekend but we are actively tracking the incoming storm. 🏡📲If you live along or near the San Mateo Creek – please make sure to sign up for SMC Alerts with your home address https://www.smcalert.info/ We will provide updates as the storm develops. During the week of January 9, there is currently an approximately 25% chance that water may reach the dam’s spillway during one of the next storm events. Happy World Wetlands Day!!! If you have ever walked to Trestles, you know that that unique transition from a highly developed urban area to a relatively natural wetlands and beach. Almost all creeks in Southern California have been channelized with portions of their embankments encased in concrete. In these cases, little coastal riparian habitat remains. A notable exception is San Mateo Creek, the most pristine coastal stream in Southern California. Its headwaters originate in the San Mateo Canyon Wilderness Area. The 160 acres of the Trestles Wetlands Natural Preserve include a freshwater lagoon, marshland and several distinct plant communities, home to several endangered species and provide one of the most diverse habitats in coastal Southern California. Our goals for this fragile ecosystem are to monitor, protect and restore the Trestles Wetlands Natural Preserve to as natural and healthy a habitat as possible. Today is California Native American Day and we celebrate the indigenous people that lived on the sacred land at San Onofre State Beach. For thousands of years, the Acjachemen people lived along San Mateo Creek and surrounding areas in several villages of Panhe which translates to “place by the water”. The Acjachemen were hunter-gatherers, basket weavers, built boats of tulle to catch fish and made medicine from the native plants. They were the first ecologists of Orange County making use of everything they hunted and gathered. Today, the Acjachemen people work to protect their sacred grounds, pass on their traditions and help educate the community about their connection to the earth. The historical home of Panhe continues to be used as a spiritual and ceremonial site. A yearly Earth Day celebration is held at San Mateo campground in the spring. It was 12 years ago we were fighting the #OrangeCounty TCA at state and federal hearings to #SaveTrestles and prevent the agency from extending the 241 toll road south through #SanMateoCreek to I-5 at #SanOnofreStateBeach. Last week, rather anticlimactically, the TCA announced they were abandoning the plan. This afternoon, as the wildflowers bloomed and the birds sang, I took in the view of where the freeway would've been routed from the trail departing the empty #SanMateoCampground, which also would've fallen victim to the 241 freeway extension.
