Two years ago I made a painting of the North Carolina map for my friend @g_armetta (which is still one of my favorite pieces I’ve ever painted - scroll to see it!) so I had to make her a new one for her new state! I used the state flower (syringa) and tree (western white pine) of Idaho and i think it turned out pretty cute.

Matti, or Indian Laurel, Terminalia elliptica, is the first of the two ‘State Trees’ of Goa as per the official gazette notification of December 2017. Matti is also known as crocodile bark tree because of the segmented surface of the bark, making it look like crocodile skin. It has a unique ability to store potable drinking water in its trunk that could help lost trekkers to survive like a camel stores in its hump. Its wood is fire resistant and was used to make jambs and ribs to hold the roof tiles of traditional Goan homes. It's bark is used for tanning leather and used as a dye for fishnets. Explore traditional medicinal uses of Matti bark, leaves, and extracts in herbal remedies. From controlling diarrhoea, treating gastrointestinal disorders and skin ailments to healing wounds and pain relieving, Matti has been valued for its therapeutic properties in indigenous medicine systems. What are we doing to promote our state tree? Are we at the least planting it? Apparently Matti is one of the 2 state trees of Goa. Do you want to know the second state tree of Goa? Khejri (Prosopis cineraria) is one of the most common tree species found in India (in the dry regions of Rajasthan, Delhi, Gujarat, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh), Afghanistan, Iran, and Pakistan. It plays a vital role in preserving the ecosystem of arid and semi-arid areas, mainly in the Thar Desert. It is capable of growing in areas of rainfall ranging from 100–600 mm. The tree can withstand the hottest winds, the driest season and stay alive where other plants cannot survive. Each part of the tree, from root to pod, finds some use or another. The extent of its importance is highlighted in its recognition as the ‘state tree’ of Rajasthan. Since all parts of khejri are useful it is called the ‘kalpavriksha of the desert’. It is also known as the ‘king of the desert’ and the ‘wonder tree’. It is a symbol of socio-economic development in the area. Despite being the most documented tree in the desert with all its importance and services to the community through food, fodder wood and medicine, the tree is struggling for existence. In the past few decades, there has been a change in the ecological conditions of the Thar. These studies have pointed out some major threats to the ecosystem of the desert and some specific to the khejri tree. Kannan knows the traditional skill of climbing and working on toddy palms. It’s a skill and technique to be learnt young and mastered as it is neither an easy affair nor a simple task. While climbing is one part of the skill, the fronds have rough and jagged edges that need to be managed and cut to allow for handling. They are then to be arranged in a simple yet effective interweave pattern after stomping to flatten and dry them, for use as thatch! How cool is that? 😎😁 #toddypalm #palmclimbing #traditionalknowledgesystems #traditionalskills #tamilnadubiodiversity #statetree

Meet our Tennessee Tree of the Week - the Yellow-poplar ("Liriodendron tulipifera"). You may have heard of this tree by its other names - it is sometimes known as a Tulip Poplar, a Tulip Tree, a Tulip Magnolia, or a Whitewood. Known as Tennessee's official state tree, the Yellow-poplar is part of the magnolia family and is native to the southeastern region of the United States. It was chosen as the state tree in 1947 for two reasons: 🌳 It grows state wide. 🌳 It was widely used by the pioneers to build homes and farms. Today, the tree, which is one of the largest hardwood trees in North America, has many commercial uses, including in lumber, plywood, furniture, and musical instruments. It is resistant to most pests, but, under drought and other poor conditions, it can become more susceptible to a few insect infestations, as well as verticillium wilt (a soil fungus), mold, powdery mildew, leaf spots, and cankers. The Yellow-poplar can be identified by its 4 to 8 inch leaves that are shaped somewhat like a tulip, its large yellow-green flowers that bloom in late spring to early summer, and its gray-green, ridged bark. In addition, the bole of the tree (aka the stem or trunk of the tree) is typically very long and straight with few to no low limbs. #tennessee #trees #nature #forest #history #tree #forests #conservation #science #gardening #sustainable #sustainability #landscaping #wood #woods #forestry #earthfocus #ecology #dendrology #statetree #earthfocus #wilderness #goodvibes #positivevibes #reforestation #poplar

Holly is often synonymous with the winter holiday season, with its evergreen foliage and red berries. Did you know that American holly (Ilex opaca) is also officially Delaware’s state tree? This festive broadleaf evergreen tree can grow up to 40-60 feet tall and typically 10 to 20 feet wide. The berries, which can be not only red, but shades of orange, or yellow, are not only attractive in the winter landscape, but they also feed birds and small mammals, and the evergreen foliage provides winter cover for these animals. Grow American holly in full sun to part shade in average to moist well-drained soil. Since the plant is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants, you need to have female plants for berry production and at least one male plant for pollination. Enjoy the beautiful tree year round!

12/19/2023, 5:55:16 PM

Seems like a particularly good year for our State Tree, the American Holly. Learn something: 🟢 This native tree is easily identified by its dark green, thorny leaves and smooth bark. 🔴 American holly also attracts butterflies and bees that swarm its greenish white flowers. 🟢 Birds flock to the female plant’s bright red or orange fruits that persist through winter. 🔴 The wood is cream-colored and can be used as decorative inlay on furniture. 🟢 Holly has both male and female trees, with females producing ornamental red berries that are a favorite food for birds. 🔴 The American holly was named Delaware’s official tree in 1939 when our state was the leading exporter of holly Christmas wreaths. 🟢 Holly was big business in Delaware in the 1920s and 1930s. As the year’s last cash crop, holly wreath production boosted farm income until imported plastic wreaths put an end to the boom by the 1950s. #AmericanHolly #Delaware #StateTree

I visited the National Christmas tree. The 40-foot tree is surrounded by 58 state and territory Christmas trees, which feature ornaments created by students around the nation. Of course, I found New Mexico and had to look at all the creative art on each ornament that the students at the New Mexico School of the Arts handcrafted. @nmschoolforthearts The students did an amazing job showing our New Mexico pride! ❤️💛🌶 #mrsnewmexicoamerican2023 #mrskimberlydearing #newmexicotrue #newmexicoqueen #americanqueens #takesondc #washingtondc #NationalChristmasTreeLighting #Christmas #FindYourPark #NationalParkService #christmastime🎄 #nationaltree #statetree #newmexicoschoolofthearts #studentcreated #newmexicolandofenchantment #newmexico #thewhitehouse @mrs_n_missfornewmexico_america @mrspageanthq @mrspageantry @whitehouse

Blessed to be marking exceptional quality big trees today. The decision to harvest a massive tree like this 34 inch diameter at breast height tulip poplar doesn’t come easy or lightly. I have to consider whether the forest will benefit or not by my selection. Throughout these pics, notice how the massive tree’s canopy is shading out the post to pole sized trees that will take its’ spot. #consultingforester #indianahardwoods #silviculture #StateTree #TulipPoplar #YellowPoplar #ForestManagement #Conservation #ForestProud #ItTakesAForest

It's #NationalAlabamaDay! DID YOU KNOW❓ The State Tree of Alabama is the Longleaf Pine Tree. Longleaf pines are known for their longevity. Some can live up to 500 years, making them one of the longest-lived of all pines. Longleaf pines are well-adapted to fire, and periodic fires are essential for their regeneration. Fire helps control understory vegetation and allows the longleaf pine seedlings to establish.
