Pueblo homes were built against the canyon walls. The ancestral Pueblo people used the canyon wall to carve rooms, known today as cavates (CAVE-eights), into the tuff cliffs of the Pajarito Plateau. Over a thousand of these rooms are located in the walls of Frijoles Canyon (the black holes in the canyon wall in the photo). Masonry structures were built in front of most cavates. Groups of these homes, cavate villages, were used by generation after generation of Ancestral Pueblo people. Gouges in the ceilings of cavates show that builders used tools such as digging sticks and sharpened stones to enlarge naturally occurring openings in the tuff. Most cavates are single rooms, but some are connected by interior doorways. Many cavates were fronted with masonry structures up to three stories high that were constructed of tuff blocks and mud mortar. These rooms were used for many things including weaving, grinding corn, and storage. Many cavates contain carved and plastered niches, probably for storing pots and household items. Sockets in the ceiling, along with anchors set in the floor, held supports for looms that were used for weaving. The cavates were also used as living quarters. I was inspired by @kjdspoering to draw what I see outside our camper. I don’t have a lot of practice with drawing and sketching, but it’s something I have become more interested in since I started tapestry weaving. I’m also inspired by my husband because he recently has seriously taken up the art and has been amazing me with what he could do with a bit of focus and intention. It helps, too, that he has acquired lots of good pencils! Our campsite is in a valley surrounded by mountains and forest in Carson National Forest. I always feel best surrounded by forest. Welcome Constantine ♥️ A sweet 5 year old gelding was brought to us from a kind person that rescued him from going to slaughter, got him healthy and gave him lots of love for years. Unfortunately they can’t care for Constantine any longer and asked for our help. We’re grateful to be able to welcome him, with the support of our friends 🙏🏼 So far he is doing well with the horses as they figure out a new dynamic with this addition to the family. Constantine is a very sweet and gentle soul. He wears a mask to protect his eyes from the sun since they are bright blue and have low melanin pigment density in the irises, which is related to his coat color! They are beautiful but fragile.
