This particular prairie dog was in a spot where a heavy duty fabric that was made to go over the fence was not completely over the fence but rather blew up revealing the prairie dog but when the gust stopped it caused the fabric to fall back down and block my view. The last images I'll ever take... with the om1 mk ii... . Om systems let me borrow the om1 mk ii and 150-400 for the past month. It was pretty cool to mess around with, and despite trying to learn a new camera in a short time, I managed to get some decent images. These were from my last outing with it the other day. . Wilson's Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, black phoebe, and an Epidonax of some sort. Early morning with a New Mexico coyote 😊
We say goodbye to our beloved black bear, Koshari, one of the largest black bears in New Mexico who was over 20 years of age and was an educational ambassador at Wildlife West Nature in Edgewood. He was among the park visitors’ favorites and could often be seen relaxing in full view in front of the plexiglass window in his natural habitat. He was recently in declining health and was surrounded by park volunteers, Roger Alink, park founder, and veterinary staff as they gave their final farewells to this magnificent animal. Koshari came to Wildlife West in 2005 when he was captured by New Mexico Game and Fish officers at Navajo Lake in northern New Mexico. He was going into campgrounds and swimming out to people’s boats to break into their coolers. He was not afraid of people, which was dangerous for the people and this two strikes bear. Luckily, youth working at the park through the NM Youth Conservation Corps program had just completed construction of a new habitat for a black bear! Along with many community donations, Koshari, whose name means clown in Navajo, came to his new home at Wildlife West in August of 2005. In the wild black bears can eat up to 30,000 calories a day and in his younger days, Koshari ate about 150 pounds of food a week, including omnivore kibble, nuts, seeds, meat, and lots of fruits and vegetables. Amazingly, he was a dainty eater and could be seen picking up individual grapes to eat. Koshari will be greatly missed by so many. Got up in elevation and away from the worst of the spring run off for a great day of chasing these scrappy small stream wild browns. Water levels were high but still very fishable with frequent takes of both the dry fly and nymph of my rig. This weekend brought a decent temperature drop with snow showers in much of Northern New Mexico on Saturday which may have contributed to temporarily less severe runoff conditions. I was pretty excited to try my new 7 foot glass 3 weight from @antflyfishing and even more so impressed after taking it to the stream. It was absolutely perfect for making precision casts into pocket water and between log jams and granite boulders. Mr. Blue Sky…wood duck looking a little discombobulated on a bluebird kind of day. Actually the wood duck was shaking its head all around…reminded me of a swimmer trying to get water out of their ears. See pic 2 for a better view of this guy. I was photographing geese on the river when he landed on a nearby cottonwood tree. Wood ducks got their name due to them being one of the few waterfowl to nest in trees. They have sharp nails on their webbed feet which allows them to perch. Ever since seeing him, I’ve gotten the phrase, “How much wood would a wood duck chuck if a wood duck could chuck wood” stuck in my head! Try saying that 5 times quickly! So silly as the saying is really about a wood chuck but turns out they don’t chuck wood either! Their name is derived from the Native American word wuchak which English settlers translated to wood chuck. Everyone thinks snakes are out to get you, but that couldn't be further from the truth. In fact, these snakes want so little to interact with you that they will play dead just to get you to leave it alone. They're basically me at parties. This is a Mexican Hognose (Heterodon kennerlyi), an absolutely adorable and gorgeous animal that Joe and I found while driving down a road in Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The Mexican Hognose has a fairly limited distribution in the United States, only being known from the southern reaches of Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. It was formerly considered a subspecies of the Western Hognose (Heterodon nasicus), but has been elevated to its own species. Hognose snakes are famous for their defense mechanisms when encountered. The Flehman response, also known as lip curling, is a common behavior in mammals. Male deer do it in response to females’ urine. It allows them to test the scent for pheromones and determine if she’s fertile. Not a bad day above 8.5k feet in elevation. Spring runoff rendered my plan A stream unfishable so I jumped up in elevation a little and found water that was a little friendlier. Along the way I was able to take in some great views of a beautiful caldera, a herd of cow elk, and a small garter snake amongst other high elevation spring wildlife.
