OTD - April 29, 1925 - animation artist Iwao Takamoto was born. Takamoto studied at Thomas Jefferson High School, and graduated in 1940. During WWII, He was one of many Japanese-Americans sent to the Manzanar internment camps, where he learned basic drawing from two co-internees. After the war, Takamoto joined Walt Disney's studio in 1945 as an inbetweener on shorts, becoming an assistant on "Fun and Fancy Free" (1947) and then as Milt Kahl's assistant on the 'Pecos Bill' segment of "Melody Time" (1948). He kept this position on the further features "Ichabod and Mr Toad" (1949), "Cinderella" (1950), "Peter Pan" (1953) and "Lady and the Tramp" (1955), and assisted Marc Davis on "Sleeping Beauty" (1959). After working on "101 Dalmatians" (1961), Takamoto joined Hanna-Barbera, where he created the designs for several characters, including Astro from "The Jetsons" (1962-63), Alice in "Alice in Wonderland" (1966) and most famously Scooby-Doo (1969), whom he designed as an antithesis to a realistic Great Dane ("even his color is wrong"). Takamoto was then promoted to producer on the shows "Josie and the Pussycats" (1970), "The Harlem Globetrotters" (1970-71) and "The Addams Family" (1973), and co-directed the features "Charlotte's Web" (1973) and "The Jetsons Movie" (1990). Takamoto received a Winsor McCay Award in 1996, the same year that Time Warner acquired Hanna-Barbera, and he was then made vice president of Warner Bros Animation's special projects. His last major roles were as creative consultant on the Scooby-Doo features "Scooby-Doo: Pirates Ahoy!" (2006), "Chill Out, Scooby-Doo!" (2007). He died of heart failure in 2007. Takamoto was famous for his perfectionist draftsmanship, his contributions to theatrical and television animation, and his long devotion to his field. WB Animation president Sander Schwartz said of him : "[He] wasn't only an extremely talented artist. He was also a magnificent person. He always sported a large smile, offered firm handshakes and greeted everyone warmly. [...] Those of us who had the privilege of working with him will regret his precious presence and his good advice, along with his unmatched talent and spirit."

OTD - April 5, 1904 - animator William "Hicks" Lokey was born. Lokey began his career at Van Beuren's Aesop Fables Studio in 1925 as an inker and painter, and after a hiatus to produce commercial art, returned in 1930 to eventually become an animator. He was fired after a failed attempt to form an animator’s union, and in 1934 was hired at Fleischer Studios in Myron Waldman’s unit on Betty Boop cartoons including "There's Something About A Soldier" (1934) and "Betty Boop and the Little King" (1936). According to himself, he averaged 1200 drawings per cartoon during this time. Lokey partook in the 1937 Fleischer animators' strike, and though he crossed the picket line, he was fired due to his union sympathies. He then moved over to Walter Lantz's studio in Los Angeles for a year, where he animated on shorts such as "Nellie of the Circus" (1939). In 1939, Lokey joined Disney, where he animated on the 'Dance of the Hours' segment of "Fantasia" (1940) and half of the “Pink Elephants” sequence in "Dumbo" (1941), which he later looked back at as the proudest part of his career. After serving as a reserve officer during WWII, he returned to Disney to animate on "Melody Time" (1948) and "Ichabod and Mr Toad" (1949). Sometime in the late 1950s, Lokey was hired to work on commercials at Paul Fennell's studio, and in 1959 he was hired at Hanna-Barbera, where he worked for nearly 30 years. There, he animated on the "Huckleberry Hound" and "Yogi Bear" shows, and the feature "The Man Called Flintstone" (1966). Lokey retired in 1986, and died in 1990. Lokey was famous for his senses of weight and timing, and his contributions to several notable American animation studios. He received the Winsor McCay Award in 1990. #hickslokey #vanbeuren #aesopsfables #fleischerstudios #myronwaldman #bettyboop #walterlantz #waltdisney #fantasia #dumbo #pinkelephants #melodytime #theadventuresofichabodandmrtoad #hannabarbera #yogibear #huckleberryhound #themancalledflintstone #television #americananimation #newyorkanimation #animationlegends #vintageanimation #vintagecartoons #animator #artist #art

OTD - March 30, 1913 - animator and artist Marc Davis, one of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men, was born. Davis joined Disney in 1935 as Grim Natwick's assistant on "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937). He then devoted five years to doing story work and animal studies for "Bambi" (1942), in which he animated Flower. After doing more studies for "Victory Through Air Power" (1943), Davis went on to animate the animal characters in "Song of the South" (1946), "Fun and Fancy Free" (1947) and "Ichabod and Mr Toad" (1949), and also taught classes at the Chouinard Art Institute. Davis’ talent for drawing the female figure led to him getting assigned the main character in "Cinderella" (1950), including in the scene where she gets her ball gown, which Walt Disney called his favorite feat of animation. Although he did not particularly enjoy this type of work, he went on to design and animate Alice in "Alice in Wonderland" (1951), Tinker Bell in "Peter Pan" (1953), and Aurora and Maleficent in "Sleeping Beauty" (1959). After animating all of Cruella DeVil in "One Hundred and One Dalmatians" (1961) and doing concept art for the scrapped “Chanticleer” film (“some of the best work I did at the studio”), Davis moved on to Disneyland, where he intended to bring humor with his contributions to rides such as "The Haunted Mansion" and "Pirates of The Caribbean". He was first and foremost a fine artist, and in his free time enjoyed drawing in every medium, particularly pictures of Indigenous Polynesians. Davis retired in 1978, and was awarded the Winsor McCay Award four years later. He died in 2000. Davis was famous for his artistic versatility and expertise, his insightful lectures, and his contributions to every department of classic Disney. Walt said of him : "I have a whole building over there filled with animators and that's all they can do. Marc can do story, he can do character, he can animate, he can design shows for me. All I have to do is tell him what I want and it's there. He's my Renaissance Man."

OTD - March 29, 1909 - animator, storyman and director John "Jack" Kinney was born. Kinney joined Disney in 1931 as an inbetweener and did his first animation on "Santa's Workshop" (1932). He went on to become a writer, doing story work on shorts such as "Donald and Pluto" (1936) and "Mickey's Trailer" (1938) , and was promoted to director on a sequence of "Pinocchio" (1940) that was cut from the film. Starting with "Bone Trouble" (1940), Kinney became one of the studio's most prolific short directors. He is best known as the director of the Goofy series, helming a total of 39 entries beginning with "Goofy's Glider" (1940). He notably established (with storyman Ralph Wright) the "How To" format for the character, which started with "How To Ride A Horse" (1941) and was carried into many later entries, including "How To Swim" (1942), the Oscar-nominated "How To Play Football" (1944), and "Hockey Homicide" (1945). He was also director on 1940 features including “Dumbo” (1941), “The Three Caballeros” (1944), “Make Mine Music” (1946), and the ‘Wind in the Willows’ segment of “Ichabod and Mr Toad” (1949). In addition, Kinney directed the Oscar-winning "Der Fuehrer’s Face” (1943), and the documentary “The Story of Menstruation” (1946). After being laid off from Disney in 1957, Kinney founded his own studio, Jack Kinney Productions, where he directed UPA’s feature “1001 Arabian Nights” (1959). He then produced King Features' "Popeye the Sailor" TV show (1960-61) with his brother Dick, and later wrote for "The New Three Stooges" (1965). The last part of Kinney's career was spent as story director for Hanna-Barbera on the Scooby-Doo spinoffs. He received a Winsor McCay Award in 1983, and published a memoir five years later. Kinney died in 1992. Kinney was famous for his sense of brash comedy, his laid-back approach to direction, and his prolific filmography, especially as director of Goofy. He explained in an interview : "I'd worked with all the other [Disney] characters at one time or another, but the Goof to me was a nice long, lean character that you could move; you coulassociate with, as being dumber than yourself. They always make you feel good, you know."

OTD - March 22, 1909 - animator Milton "Milt" Kahl, one of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men, was born. Kahl joined Disney in 1934 as an inbetweener and later as Bill Roberts' assistant on the Mickey Mouse cartoons, and was promoted to animator on "Mickey's Circus" (1936). In "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), Kahl animated the forest animals, and later made his breakthrough by designing the main character in "Pinocchio" (1940). He went on to animate animal characters in "Bambi" (1942), "Saludos Amigos" (1942) and "The Three Caballeros" (1944), and also animated on Goofy shorts such as "Tiger Trouble" and "Hockey Homicide" (both 1945). Starting with "Song of the South" (1946), Kahl became the studio's go-to character designer. He subsequently animated Pecos Bill in "Melody Time" (1948), Brom Bones in "Ichabod and Mr Toad" (1949), the Fairy Godmother in "Cinderella" (1950), and Alice in "Alice in Wonderland" (1951), in addition to often helping other animators with their scenes. Due to his excellent draftsmanship, Kahl was assigned the male heroes in "Peter Pan" (1953) and "Sleeping Beauty" (1959), though he preferred animating cartoonier characters. Starting with "Sleeping Beauty" and "101 Dalmatians" (1961), Kahl's graphic, modernist drawing style became the norm of Disney animation. He went on to animate the villains in "The Sword in the Stone" (1963), "The Jungle Book" (1967) and "The Aristocats" (1970), "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971), and the protagonist in "Robin Hood" (1973). After animating all of Madame Medusa in "The Rescuers" (1977), a character he later called his favorite, Kahl retired in 1976, though he did character des suggestions for "The Black Cauldron" (1985). He died in 1987. Considered by many the best draftsman in Disney history (although he personally considered Marc Davis superior), Kahl was famous for his drawing versatility, his construction (with Fred Moore) of the "Disney style", and his landmark achievements in animation history. He explained : "It’s just that I don’t stop trying so quickly, I keep at it. I happen to have high standards and I try to meet them.”

The following year he also began acting in television. He memorably played ranch steward Perkins in Disney’s “The Adventures of Spin and Marty” (1955) and “The New Adventures of Spin and Marty” (1957). Among his many other roles was the recurring character Harry Burns in “My Favorite Martian” (1963-1964), regular character building superintendent Mr. Bundy in the Connie Stevens series “Wendy and Me” (1964-1965), and recurring character Bert Beasley in “Maude” (1975-1977). The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) Disneyn 11. klassikko yhdistää kaksi kirjallista teosta: Kaislikossa suhisee -kirjan ja The Legend of Sleepy Hollow -novellin. Yleensä elokuvissa on jompiakumpia... vai mitä?

OTD - March 13, 1900 - animator and storyman Edward "Ted" Sears was born. Sears began his career in the 1910s designing title cards for silent films and working on Raoul Barré's "Mutt and Jeff" cartoons. He later wrote screenplays for Charley Bowers' live-action comedies, including "He Done His Best" (1926) and "The Wild Roomer" (1927). In the late 1920s, he joined Max Fleischer's studio on the Talkartoons and Screen Songs series. According to Dick Huemer, Sears invented the first storyboard and tried to submit it to the studio, but Max was uninterested. In 1931, Sears was hired by Walt Disney as the head of his Story Department, a position he kept for 27 years. He wrote for many Silly Symphonies including "The Cookie Carnival" (1935) and "Elmer Elephant" (1936), and wrote the lyrics to "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?" in "Three Little Pigs" (1933), Disney's first song hit. He was in charge of story adaptation for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937) and "Pinocchio" (1940), often suggesting gags during story meetings. Sears took part in the 1941 Goodwill trip, and did story work on "Saludos Amigos" (1942) and "The Three Caballeros" (1944). Sears contributed story work to all the studio's animated features from "Fun and Fancy Free" (1947) to "Peter Pan" (1953), and co-wrote the screenplays for the Award-winning documentaries "In Beaver Valley" (1950), "The Living Desert" (1953) and "The Vanishing Prairie" (1954). While he was co-writing "Sleeping Beauty" (1959), Sears died in 1958. Sears was famous for his sense of humor, his numerous gag ideas and pranks, and his contributions to classic Disney storytelling. Fellow storyman Winston Hibler recalled : "He was the kindest man I ever knew. He lived with laughter and without malice. He was generous in all things. His talents could be had for the asking. No job was too small, none too big. And this all adds up to the fact that through his talents and his personal virtues. Ted was able to achieve two of the goals he set for himself in life: he made good pictures and he made good friends."

OTD - March 9, 1911 - animator and director John Lounsbery, one of Walt Disney's Nine Old Men, was born. Lounsbery joined Disney in 1935 as an inbetweener and later as Norm Ferguson's assistant on the Pluto shorts and the Witch in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937). He was promoted to animator on "Pinocchio" (1940), and in Fantasia" (1940) animated his breakthrough character, Ben Ali Gator. He went on to animate on "Dumbo" (1941), "Victory Through Air Power" (1943) and "The Three Caballeros" (1944). After the war, Lounsbery animated animals in "Make Mine Music" and "Song of the South" (both 1946), Willie the Giant in "Fun and Fancy Free" (1947), scattered scenes in "Melody Time" (1948), and Ichabod in "Ichabod and Mr Toad" (1949). With the return to single-story features, he animated Lucifer in "Cinderella" (1950), the Cheshire Cat and Mad Hatter in "Alice in Wonderland" (1951), George Darling in "Peter Pan" (1953) and every scene of Tony and Joe in "Lady and the Tramp" (1955). Starting with "Sleeping Beauty" (1959), Lounsbery became known as the best animator at following Milt Kahl's graphic animation designs, although he was always very modest and even depreciative about his own work. He animated Jasper and Horace in "101 Dalmatians" (1961), the Wolf in "The Sword in the Stone" (1963), and the Elephants in "The Jungle Book" (1967). After working on "The Aristocats" (1970) and "Robin Hood" (1973), Lounsbery was promoted to director, beginning with the Oscar-nominated featurette "Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too" (1974). While he was co-directing "The Rescuers" (1977), however, he died of a heart attack in 1976. Lounsbery was famous for his mastery of squash and stretch, his sense of weight and loose flesh, and his complete lack of pretentiousness. Animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston wrote: "As a draftsman, Lounsbery was ideal for animation. His drawings were simple and loose and full of energy. They had volume and that elusive quality of life.”

Disney: The Wartime Era (or The Package Era) (1943-1949) Weird time for Disney as they weren't able to produce any proper full-length films due to World War II. As ever, elements of some of these gaven't aged well. 6. Saludos Amigos (1943) First of two movies highlighting Latin America for North American audiences, it's four shorts strung together featuring Donald Duck and new character Joe Carioca. It's quite fun for the most part. 7. The Three Caballeros (1944) Second Latin America package, this time featuring some live-action segments. Like the last film it's fun in places but quite forgettable, too. 8. Make Mine Music (1946) Similar to Fantasia, it's different segements set to music but this time more contemporary (for the time). Some segments are definitely better than others! 9. Fun And Fancy Free (1947) Two short films, Disney's take on Jack And The Beanstalk could have been a lot better (here featuring Mickey, Donald and Goofy) but the return of Jiminy Cricket is welcome! 10. Melody Time (1948) Another one similar to Fantasia/Make Mine Music. 11. The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad (1949) Fun takes on The Wind In The Willows and The Legend Of Sleepy Hollow, though the latter is nothing like more modern versions I've seen! #disneyanimationstudios #disneyclassics #waltdisney #thewartimeera #saludosamigos #thethreecaballeros #makeminemusic #funandfancyfree #melodytime #theadventuresofichabodandmrtoad #1943 #1944 #1946 #1947 #1948 #1949 #fantasia #mickeymouse #donaldduck #goofy #jiminycricket

#disneyanimation #disneycollection #colecciondepeliculas #coleccionvhs #vhsdisney #disneyvhs #thewindinthewillows #makeminemusic #theadventuresofichabodandmrtoad #elballenatoquequisocantarenlaopera #TheWhaleWhoWantedToSingAttheMet #williethewhale #elvientoenlossauces #vhs #coleccionista #disneyfan #disneyaddict

OTD - January 17, 1913 - background artist Claude Coats was born. After a membership in the California Water Color Society and a brief stint at MGM, Coats joined Disney in 1935. He provided backgrounds for shorts such as "Mickey's Fire Brigade" and "Pluto's Judgment Day" (both 1935), and later the Oscar winners "The Old Mill" (1937) and "Ferdinand the Bull" (1938). He joined Samuel Armstrong's unit to paint backgrounds on "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), and from that point on provided backgrounds for all the studio's features that contained animation up through 1955 (except "Bambi" (1942) and "So Dear To My Heart" (1948)). This included assisting Gustaf Tenggren on "Pinocchio" (1940), and Mary Blair on "The Three Caballeros" (1944), "Song of the South" (1946), "Melody Time" (1948) and "Alice in Wonderland" (1951). He also provided backgrounds for more short subjects including "Education for Death" (1943), "Dog Watch" (1945), "The Little House" (1952), and "Ben and Me" (1953). After "Lady and the Tramp" (1955), Coats moved to Imagineering, providing designs for Disneyland rides such as "Mr Toad's Wild Ride", "The Haunted Mansion", and "Pirates of The Caribbean". He continued to work in theme parks until his retirement in 1991, and he died the following year. Unanimously recalled as the most talented background artist in Disney history, Coats was famous for his mastery of light, his sense of depth, and the careful balance of his color schemes. He explained : " I always thought in terms of mood and color [...] (Various colors and shapes) create emphasis on where you want people to watch, and what you want them to see". #claudecoats #waltdisney #sillysymphony #snowwhiteandthesevendwarfs #pinocchio #fantasia #dumbo #saludosamigos #thethreecaballeros #makeminemusic #songofthesouth #funandfancyfree #melodytime #theadventuresofichabodandmrtoad #cinderella #aliceinwonderland #peterpan #ladyandthetramp #classicdisney #fineartist #backgroundart #animation #art

OTD - January 12, 1912 - animator John Sibley was born. Sibley joined Disney in 1937 as an inbetweener on "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937) and received his first animation credit on "The Reluctant Dragon"'s 'How To Ride A Horse" (1941). Alongside Wolfgang Reitherman, he became the top Goofy animator (which earned him the nickname "The Goof Master"), animating on shorts such as "How To Swim" (1943), "How To Be A Sailor" (1944) and "Hockey Homicide" (1945). Having established a zany, loose animation style, Sibley animated Casey in "Make Mine Music" (1946), Pecos Bill in "Melody Time" (1948) and the climactic chase of the 'Sleepy Hollow' segment of "Ichabod and Mr Toad" (1949) with Reitherman. When the studio returned to single-story features in 1950, Sibley returned to the shorts department. After shorts were discontinued in 1953, he returned to features, starting with the Siamese Cats in "Lady and the Tramp" (1955). He later animated the Lackey and Goons in "Sleeping Beauty" (1959), Horace and Jasper in "101 Dalmatians" (1961) and the Wolf in "The Sword in the Stone" (1963). For unknown reasons, Sibley's presence decreased at the studio, and he was laid off in 1965 after working on "Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree" (1966). Sibley died from a stroke in 1973. Sibley was significant for fluid, comedic animation style, which was expressive and enriched several Disney shorts. Animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston wrote of him : "[he] was especially good at funny, imaginative action and timing. (...) he could make any action funny as well as believable". #johnsibley #waltdisney #goofy #makeminemusic #melodytime #theadventuresofichabodandmrtoad #ladyandthetramp #sleepingbeauty #onehundredandonedalmatians #theswordinthestone #winniethepooh #disneyanimation #americananimation #comedy #animationhistory #animator #animation #art
