We move on from “Years of Lead” and continue our foray into the poliozetteschi genre with “Rogue Cops and Rackateers: Two Crime Thrillers by Enzo G. Castellari”. The first film in this collection is “The Big Racket” from 1976. The film follows a rogue cop as he attempts to take down a criminal gang terrorizing local businesses. The films in “Years of Lead” felt like small, realistic crime pictures but “The Big Racket” lives up to its name with a grandiosity not present in those films. The core grit remains intact but like the American films it’s inspired by this is a loud, over the top action movie. A gang has begun harassing local store owners for payment, but the police are unable to discover who’s running the scheme. Constantly being undermined by superiors leads rough and tumble Maresciallo to exit the force. He investigates outside the law and manages to assemble his own force, banding together with community members who’ve been victimized by the gang. As the investigation continues Maresciallo is surprised to find just how deep the conspiracy goes. The film crescendos excellently as mystery gives way to action, resolving in a bombastic and highly entertaining final shootout! I really enjoyed having an ensemble cast in this picture. It widens the scope and allows for interesting discussions revolving around vigilante justice. Everyone does a good job, but leading man Fabio Testi really shines! I’m unfamiliar with his body of work but he definitely possesses macho star power. “The Big Racket” is a tremendously crafted crime film with many layers to explore. It’s loud, epic, and fun but still maintains the grit and bleakness of its genre. Rating: 2/10 Watched at the cinema! Was it worth it? No. Close Encounters was a disappointment and that’s a shame coming from Spielberg. Nothing basically happens in the film or rather it does but it’s all just a bunch of random things. The story is there but hangs by a very loose thread. Not to mention the poorly written characters with the most thrown in love interest and a character deciding to leave his wife and kids so easily in a fast turn of events. The most redeeming quality for the film is perhaps the special effects weren’t too bad and the musical score was decent. Most of the film revolves around the main man rambling on and on about the mountain and making models of that mountain. So long and for what? A lacklustre ending to top it off with no explanations to anything even though there is a pretty big mystery going on regarding time travel? I don’t know cause it wasn’t explained. If the point is that it’s supposed to be unexplained and mysterious then fair enough but it still has a very weak story. I will also say it’s cool to see the government and aliens not fight for once in media and actually communicate so that’s something that makes this stand out. Rating: 7.5/10 A great anime film that was two hours long but flew by and was never a bore, was definitely fun to watch. The whole world in this is very mystical and vibrant with many characters and scenery to explore, the story and lore to the magical place made you intrigued as lots of fun to learn about. It’s a simple enough coming of age story and I’m sure there is other messages in it too especially for Japanese audiences and history of Japan but the coming of age was enough for me and to see the girl overcome changes and stepping into growing up through this way was really nice and sends her off nicely at the end too in comparison to the start. The animation was one of the best parts of this film, the visuals were stunning. I did think this film would be a bit different though and that I’d like it more since it’s got high reviews but I really enjoyed it even if not as much as others. Rating: 7/10 A pretty good movie and honestly made me jump a few times surprisingly, the film is super creepy and disturbing too and does the horror elements really well to make you feel uneasy. It’s got some great gore and bloody scenes in it too, some pretty crazy ones. It’s a film that gets better as it goes on and I really enjoyed the ending scenes the most out of it all. It was a pretty crazy ending! The single take birth scene with the screaming was intense and raw, honestly pretty iconic if you ask me. I love a good one shot scene that makes you react emotionally and that was pretty awesome and raw I liked that. Seeing Sydney Sweeney in a different role and genre than usual too makes the film unique to watch, having someone you know or a famous actor as the lead in a horror always helps too with rooting for their survival and making it more tense if you know them. The story behind the film is really cool too how she auditioned at 17 but it was dropped and she picked it up later on and hired everyone to make it, very cool thing to do and I think more people in Hollywood should do things like that. This didn’t stop! Challengers is undoubtedly going to be the most electric movie of the year, from minute one you’re pulled in and there’s no let up from then. Intense, sensual and beautifully crafted, with three actors at their very best Challengers succeeds at being an honest explanation of relationships and the passion and drive you have to achieve your goals. The score is magnificent, the screenplay is smart and the camera work in the tennis matches especially, showing you the action from all different aspects and like I said, them scenes are so intense. The scenes where we have two of the leads on screen and you can hear the voices raise and just the faint heartbeat sounds in the background, they were the scenes that won me over. I was a bit on the fence about the ending to be honest, not that I thought it was bad I just felt like it had a bit of room to go and maybe that’s just me, but I could’ve sat for another 30 minutes easily, and genuinely that’s me being very picky. Mais un homme refuse de se soumettre aux nouvelles lois, le corsaire de l’espace le plus recherché de l’univers, Albator. . ✨J’étais curieux de découvrir ce film d’animation car depuis l’enfance j’ai souvent entendu parler d’Albator, mais n’étant pas de ma génération, je ne m’y étais jamais intéressé vraiment. On s’envole ici dans l’espace avec des vaisseaux futuristes, de la technologie dernier cri et des lois qui s’étendent à l’univers tout entier. On va suivre le capitaine Albator, le corsaire insoumis, et l’équipage hétéroclite de son vaisseau fantôme l’arcadia dans une lutte contre le système pour la liberté de la terre. Visuellement, je suis partagé entre deux eaux. D’un côté j’ai trouvé les décors absolument magnifiques, mais d’un autre, j’ai trouvé que les personnages manquaient d’expressions visuelles et donc ne dégageaient pas grand chose, un peu comme une longue cinématique de jeu vidéo. . ✨Concernant l’histoire en elle même, je dois avouer que je me suis un peu ennuyé malgré quelques scènes d’action. Peut être que si j’avais connu l’histoire ou retrouvé le héros de mon enfance, la nostalgie aurait pu m’embarqué, mais pour le novice que je suis malheureusement ça m’a laissé sur le banc de touche. . For a movie that is 60 years, this is a phenomenal western. The sountrack from the legendary composer Ennio Morricone, who got his international success with striking and style-creating music is just beautiful. LATE last night I watched the 2nd film of this Buster Keaton double feature, Sherlock Jr. (1924), a film that's pretty standard fare Buster Keaton until the final act in which it broke my brain at least 15 times with its insanely imaginative practical effects and stunts, both of which are still influencing filmmaking a century later. For the last 10min the technical wizardry of the movie had me rapid-fire asking myself, "How did Keaton do that?!" and the answer is he had an unheard of level of imagination and creativity and he broke his neck while making Sherlock Jr. and didn't even know it for months. When I watch movies made now that aren't Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), I rarely ask myself, "How did they do that?" because the answer's almost always "Computers." 🙄 No fun. TENTACULES (1977) 🐙 Une pieuvre mutante sème la terreur dans une cité balnéaire. Des scientifiques et policiers vont mener l’enquête suite à plusieurs disparitions. Nous avons un casting prestigieux pour ce film italien réalisé par le co réalisateur de Piranhas 2 avec James Cameron. Ce film est sorti peu après le succès des Dents de la mer et ça se voit car nous avons pas mal de scènes qui y font penser avec même certaines allusions au film de Spielberg. Le film est agréable à suivre même si la BO est en total décalage avec les images comme ça arrive souvent avec des films d’horreur italiens de cette époque. Peu de suspense et un final un peu brouillon quand même. Synopsis : Alfonso, Arthur et Victoria sont trois explorateurs en quête de grandes aventures, mais il est difficile pour eux de faire les quatre cents coups dans une petite ville si paisible.
