Go into this expecting a war photography movie and you won't hate it so much. I appreciate @reginaparham1 for telling me what not to expect before I went into this one. I was able to enjoy the film a lot more than most people I've seen on here. With my expectations of a civil war movie, with a lot of explanation out of the way, I was able to open-mindedly dive into the story of war photographers. There is a lot of war, violence, and gore at times. But what I really found interesting was the morality struggle with the photographers. The job requires them to capture moments of death in real time, while others are fighting for their lives—I can see where that may he frowned upon. There's a certain coldness that they have to carry themselves with to carry out the job, and this film wrestles with the human emotions that come with it. This comedy follows Deuce, who works as a fish tank cleaner. He's asked to look after a Gigolo's house as well as his expensive fish tank. His life is on the line if the house isn't clean. I copy/pasted from my original post if you want some back story 👇 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- When my Dad passed in Sep, I decided I wouldn't post about it unless I could do so in good taste and with purpose. If there's anything I need to share about him, it was his creativity. And it was thankfully passed down to me. This is a design he stencilled and spray painted on the wall of a small room inside a very large barn on my Uncle's property. My Dad struggled with addiction, as have I at times too. Years back, my Uncle was kind enough to take him in and also let him have his own "Man Cave"...or "Bat Cave", if you will. He had the room decked out in Batman merch and artwork. He even stapled black cloth to the walls/ceiling. On Christmas I visited my Uncle. My Dad told me about this room. But I never got to see it until Dec last year. Unfortunately, it wasn't well preserved due to weather and animals getting inside. But I saw all I needed to see. I was raised on lots of Batman cartoons/movies. Seeing this after his passing was like magic to me. The air just felt different in there. I collected anything still in one piece, along with totes and chests full collectibles he owned. Art, music, movies...these were the things we bonded over. This is who my Dad was, a true creative. I'll be sharing more of his art in the future, and pictures of him as well. LATE last night I watched the 2nd film of this Buster Keaton double feature, Sherlock Jr. (1924), a film that's pretty standard fare Buster Keaton until the final act in which it broke my brain at least 15 times with its insanely imaginative practical effects and stunts, both of which are still influencing filmmaking a century later. For the last 10min the technical wizardry of the movie had me rapid-fire asking myself, "How did Keaton do that?!" and the answer is he had an unheard of level of imagination and creativity and he broke his neck while making Sherlock Jr. and didn't even know it for months. When I watch movies made now that aren't Mad Max: Fury Road (2015), I rarely ask myself, "How did they do that?" because the answer's almost always "Computers." 🙄 No fun. Dieses Mal aber in das Subgenre des „Spaghetti-Western“ & da hab ich mir einen der großen Klassiker rausgesucht, dessen Hommage der Neuzeit wir natürlich alle kennen #DjangoUnchained, aber der originale #Django von 1966 war bisher noch offen bei mir 😊 📝Im Grenzland zu Mexiko rettet ein einsamer Revolvermann, der einen Sarg mit sich rumschleppt eine Frau vor Folter & Mord durch eine Bande Gangster. Danach macht er sich mit ihr auf ins Dorf & legt sich mit dem Gangsterboss an. Allerdings stellt sich bald heraus, dass er der Frau nicht aus altruistischen Motiven geholfen hat, sondern sich mit den Mexikanern für einen Raubzug verbünden will. 📢Düster, wortkarg, spannend… Django bringt alles mit, was ein guter Western braucht. Der „Lone Wolf“, der immer einen Sarg dabeihat, ist dabei ein so starkes Bild, dass es allein schon den Film trägt. Dazu ein paar kleinere Wendungen & Betrügereien & die durchweg spannende Story ist komplett. 🎞Fazit: obwohl ich kein großer Western-Fan bin, hat mich Django wirklcih gut unterhalten. Final Movie of my Obscure Arnie Triple Feature: Bogged down by some bad 90s CG, a weak screenplay with some terrible one-liners, and not enough James Cromwell, Eraser (1996) isn't great but it has its moments. The rail gun stuff is cool, James Caan seemed to be awake and into this performance (not always the case at this point in his career), and the final act is a lot of fun with Arnie and his mafia backup saving the day. 2nd movie of my Obscure Arnie Triple Feature: I had to finally watch Conan the Destroyer (1984) because I absolutely love Conan the Barbarian (1982) as an operatic feast for the eyes and ears with so little dialogue there might as well not be any, I love it as a bizarre fever dream that's basically the fantasy version of Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), and I love it as an unintentional satire of toxic masculinity. I say unintentional because anyone who knows anything about John Milius knows he was all-in on the ideals of warrior cultures. Conan the Destroyer is sorely missing the authentic gravitas of a John Milius film, partly due to the weakly mixed Basil Poledouris score, which is at its worst in the recycling of the Thulsa Doom temple theme (nothing short of a crime). I was pleasantly surprised to see such an early Arnold performance have legitimately funny moments, but that's not really Conan unless he's punching a camel, which he does again here. The humor ties into an overall imbalance of a tone that's more about "the friends we made along the way" than the previous film's focus on the brutality of survival in a warrior culture. And what an eclectic group of friends it is this time around with Wilt Chamberlain, Grace Jones, and Tracey Walter aka Bob, the Joker's "Number One Guy" in Batman (1989). Overall, Conan the Destroyer feels like low-rent Conan the Barbarian the whole way through but the Lovecraft-esque Brundlefly monster at the end was unexpected and somewhat awesome. I had a great time with the movie, though, because while watching it it hit me like a ton of bricks that there was a VHS copy of Conan the Destroyer in my home as a child and I saw it probably a half-dozen times about 35 years ago. Here for the action, violence, and gore? Be rest assured, you'll get what you're paying for! This film had a beautiful display of martial arts! I wanted to say that first and foremost. The techniques, the movements, the sense of urgency to inflict bodily harm in hand-to-hand combat... BEAUTIFUL! This is a movie that never takes itself seriously and takes every opportunity it can to earn a chuckle from the audience. The bad guys are cheesy, but I promise you won't mind them. Filled with dark humor and laughable moments, this film has style! I kept thinking about Scott Pilgram Vs The World, Wanted, Kung Pow Enter The Fist, and Fight Club when watching this film. Happy Challengers release day to all who celebrate! 🎾 I was lucky enough to see an early screening on Monday and haven’t stopped thinking about it since. It’s an electric film with incredible performances from the three leads, a script that beautifully captures the complexities of these characters & their relationships, a propulsive score that will have you dancing in your seat, and impeccable direction by Luca Guadagnino. We may not even be halfway through the year, but I don’t think another movie in 2024 will leave me as captivated and enthralled the way Challengers has.
