OTD - January 17, 1913 - background artist Claude Coats was born. After a membership in the California Water Color Society and a brief stint at MGM, Coats joined Disney in 1935. He provided backgrounds for shorts such as "Mickey's Fire Brigade" and "Pluto's Judgment Day" (both 1935), and later the Oscar winners "The Old Mill" (1937) and "Ferdinand the Bull" (1938). He joined Samuel Armstrong's unit to paint backgrounds on "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), and from that point on provided backgrounds for all the studio's features that contained animation up through 1955 (except "Bambi" (1942) and "So Dear To My Heart" (1948)). This included assisting Gustaf Tenggren on "Pinocchio" (1940), and Mary Blair on "The Three Caballeros" (1944), "Song of the South" (1946), "Melody Time" (1948) and "Alice in Wonderland" (1951). He also provided backgrounds for more short subjects including "Education for Death" (1943), "Dog Watch" (1945), "The Little House" (1952), and "Ben and Me" (1953). After "Lady and the Tramp" (1955), Coats moved to Imagineering, providing designs for Disneyland rides such as "Mr Toad's Wild Ride", "The Haunted Mansion", and "Pirates of The Caribbean". He continued to work in theme parks until his retirement in 1991, and he died the following year. Unanimously recalled as the most talented background artist in Disney history, Coats was famous for his mastery of light, his sense of depth, and the careful balance of his color schemes. Opening Sequence background art by Claude Coats “Lady and the Tramp” (1955) was the pinnacle of the Disney style of the 50s. Claude was up to the challenge of the backgrounds since he had been originally trained as an architect. To get an idea for a dog’s POV, Coats created a model of the house and all of the items in it. This included the painted wallpaper as well. Though the interior design of 1910 is what we would now call “cluttered,” the backgrounds never overshadow their animated counterparts. OTD - November 5, 1937 - Walt Disney's Silly Symphony "The Old Mill", directed by Wilfred Jackson, was released. This short was the first to make use of the multiplane camera, which the studio would use on its feature "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" the same year, as well as in the upcoming "Pinocchio", "Fantasia" (1940) and "Bambi" (1942). (However, according to Jackson, the production of this short was delayed because most multiplane uses went straight to "Snow White"). This device consisted of several stacked glass panes, each containing a painted background element, that were shot from the top to create an illusion of depth (last slide). The Fleischer Brothers had been using a three-dimensional device called the "Steroptical process" with a similar function since 1934, but Disney's invention allowed for greater cohesion between the backgrounds and characters. In addition, "The Old Mill" served as a testing ground for rain, lightning, wind and animal animation, which would also be used on the studio's subsequent features. It also marked the first time that an animated short relied heavily on backgrounds rather than animation or story to captivate an audience, another practice that found its ways into the features. "The Old Mill" was a huge success and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short. In 1994, it was voted the 14th Greatest Cartoon of All Time by 1,000 members of the animation field, and in 2015 was added to the American Film Registry for "cultural, historical or aesthetic significance". 🐯 Towards the end of August, I had been working on rough studies I based on model sheet drawings by Bill Peet for the 1945 Goofy short “Tiger Trouble”. In “Tiger Trouble”, Goofy, in the role of a hunter accompanied by an elephant, hunts a tiger in a jungle which leads to comical results. The scrawny tiger was the first of three Disney animated tigers animated by Milt Kahl. Kahl would later design and animate Shere Khan in “The Jungle Book” and Tigger in the “Winnie the Pooh” featurettes. This year marks 55 years since the opening of the #PiratesOfTheCaribbean at #Disneyland, as such, let's get into some history. Before the conception of the actual ride, #WaltDisney had always wanted pirates in his theme park. At one point, he had the idea to include and underground passage below the #RiversOfAmerica from New Orleans Square to what was then called Treasure Island (currently Tom Sawyer's Island) and it was going to be called Laffite's passage after the real pirate #JeanLaffite. Unfortunately, during the process of filling the river, water would get sucked into the soil, so #Walt had to cover the river with clay, which killed the idea. If you go to Disneyland now, you can still see remnants of the entrance, this includes the Anchor (which was the marker for the entrance) and a placard along the bank of the river. But Walt still wanting his pirate attraction, in 1962 turned to #Imagineer #MarkDavis and said, go do something with pirates. Mark then goes on to create a bunch of vignettes of real pirates, some of which ended up in the ride. Initially a walkthrough attraction called the #RoguesGallery, their ideas eventually outgrew the space below New Orleans Square. Keep in mind, these were all, at this point, going to be non-moving wax figures. This is when they began plans for this to be a water ride, with show scenes all around, so designer #ClaudeCoats over-designed the show scenes so there would always be something to look at in any direction. This was in concept before the Tiki room, which had the first audio #animatronics and before #ItsASmallWorld debuted the boat system that pirates would go on to use. Before the opening of #Pirates, other indoor rides were mostly small, with flat, painted sets and non-moving characters. While there was movement in Small World, the scope of the technology and realism was nowhere near pirates. I picked up @dave_bossert's CLAUDE COATS: WALT DISNEY'S IMAGINEER at the Disneyanna Collectibles Show and Sale, mostly because I couldn't pass on the opportunity to meet Dave Bossert and get an autographed copy. I focus my Disney research on the films (so many books, so little time, you know,), but after I looked inside, I was delighted that I bought it. It is packed with pictures, artwork, and appears to have chapters dedicated to attractions. It is truly stunning. It will be a while before I get to it, but I am so glad I have it. Disney child star and live Peter Pan model Bobby Driscoll was born on March 3, 1937. Today I am posting my 2003 home video of Disneyland’s Peter Pan’s Flight. Of the Disney parks around the world, Peter Pan’s Flight is one of the oldest attractions that is still around today. Opening as “Peter Pan Flight” (1955-1982), this Disneyland opening day attraction is located in Fantasyland. Unlike the other opening day dark rides (Snow White Adventures & Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride) guests are suspended in the air as they fly like Peter. Fiberglass galleons glide along an overhead monorail system made by the Cleveland Tramrail Company. The front and back masts of the ship are connected to the rail and the sails block the view of the overhead systems. The ride vehicles do not have names, like in Snow White and Mr. Toad. The scenes in this ride are more open instead of the tight corridors found in the other Fantasyland rides. Refurbishments to the ride were made in 1960, 1983 (New Fantasyland), and 2015 (projections). .
