Once upon a time (from the 1980s to about 2009), I made large pots and other things out of clay. I took a hammer to some of them and saved the shards, which I used in various works on the wall. Many of the shards ended up as weird little wire/shard pieces, which I lovingly signed and dated, played around with, made some wall installations, and put away. About a year ago, I got the itch to do something else with these strange things. I also had some old school papers lying around (saved from the 30+ years teaching public high school and middle school art), which I shredded. The shredder was hungry, so I gave it a pile of old rejection letters, too (which felt kind of good). Threw it all into an old “studio” blender and -- voila! Paper pulp! Time to DIP! Trying to make sense of these works-in-progress on this Earth Day. I’ve been using reclaimed old art work (mine) and materials to make new work for quite awhile now (since 2015 or so). These pieces are made of old paintings on paper cut into strips and woven through reclaimed food netting--the onion bags, turkey bags, potato bags, etc.--that vegetables, fruit, and poultry come in (all washed before re-use, of course). This was the first work created, but the last I’m presenting here from the completed “Specter” series… for now, that is. Sometimes, I think a series is finished and it sneaks up on me again. We’ll see. This work was one of seven “Specters” exhibited in “Undercurrents,” my two-person show last month with Nathalie Miebach, at Fountain Street Gallery in Boston’s SoWa. It is NOW ON VIEW at ARTSWORCESTER'S Gallery at 44Portland St. In Worcester, in a show called "Finders & Keepers", with an opening reception THIS FRIDAYfrom 6-9 pm. The show also includes work from Aaron Brodeur(curator), Derrick Tepaske, Chris King, Rebecca McGee Tuck, and Lisa Barthelson. “Urgent Action Required” reclaimed/re-formed old work, food net, fabric, thread, steel, words 59 x 19 x 6 inches This piece has a flimsy quality, seemingly barely holding together, just as our world seems to be barely holding together in the midst of climate catastrophes across the globe. Cobbled together with parts of old work and many layers of food net, its form is determined by the underlying past work that has been re-formed and re-used as the structure for the sculpture. Sort of like the cobbled-together approach that seems to be the hallmark of so-called “actions” to alleviate the effects of climate disasters. Quotes from the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) Sixth Assessment Report on Climate Change are embroidered on the surface of this work. They are almost lost in the texture of the food net, just as the shocking facts of climate change are lost on those who don’t experience it directly. Is anyone heeding (or even reading?) this report? I have two more works in the “Specter” series to post. The whole series was shown at Fountain Street Gallery in Boston’s SoWa last month in a two person show called “Undercurrents” with Nathalie Miebach. This one is “I/You Am/Are You/Me/Us” reclaimed/re-formed old work, food net and fabric, thread, steel, words 71 x 273 x 6 inches As I uncover possibilities in the scraps, shards, and leftovers of a longstanding studio practice, I probe autobiographical stories and question accepted narratives. These specter-like figures, that have evolved out of crushed/reclaimed old work, elicit the sensations and subtexts of human experience. They arise from the personal and the observed. Both assertive and ambiguous, their hand-stitched words and phrases twist and question the labels we use to describe who we are, what we do, what we believe. I often imagine myself in the shoes of others to explore how their life must feel. I have witnessed the damage that labels can exact on people who are just trying to live their lives in the best way they can, as all of us are. If we would just let others be who they are, and appreciate that we are all humans, that we are each other, perhaps we can really hope for a better world. This exhibit focuses on works from Virginia Mahoney's ongoing series of sculptural/conceptual garments, primarily vest forms. Virginia Mahoney is a mixed media sculptor whose work incorporates sewing, recurrent clay forms, and handwriting. She is fascinated by the variation in repetition, and the ambiguity of words, standards, and categories. She notices discomfort in thought or action and reflects on identity inherent in garments.
