I didn’t go for a sunrise walk this morning. In fact I did not even consider it. After yesterday’s rain prevented any gardening I still had a few things that I wanted to do. I hoped to go for a walk through the forest in the afternoon but I got carried away with tidying, planting and dividing in the garden. One advantage of the later sunsets is that I can eat and then go out. I had thought about going to the coast but I will probably do that tomorrow evening. Instead I walked along the tow path. Just before the sun set the thick high cloud moved away and allowed a bit of colour to show. With the 23/24 season coming to a close, it’s time to announce our awards winners. We start with our Senior Men’s team. A positive season in many ways for the 1’s, after a second place finish in Counties 1 Tribute Southern South. Once again we have been able to debut many new players creating a greater depth at the club. Seeing many of the young lads who have been introduced to the senior set up over the last few years, are really beginning to flourish leaving everyone at the club very excited for the future! Player of the season is Ed Dimascio. Ed has become one of the of the first names on the team sheet with his consistent display of hard running and rock solid defence. Happy Monday! Today (13th) is the traditional date of the Abbotsbury Garland Day! In the early 19th century, on this day the children of fishermen from the tiny Dorset village would make garlands, which were then tossed into the sea as an offering for a season of good catches. The decline of the fishing industry after the First World War changed the tradition, expanding it to include all the village children and losing the sea offering, while the village school instituted a day's holiday. They would then construct two garlands, one of wild flowers and the other of garden flowers. These were held aloft on poles and paraded from house to house in the village with the intention of collecting money and gifts for the young children. Later in the day the older children at school in nearby Weymouth would arrive home and make a more elaborate garland, likewise tour around the homes of the village. 💐🎣🪦 The Abbotsbury village school closed in 1981 and children no longer get a day's holiday — today the celebrations are thus usually held on the nearest Saturday (this year the 10th). Garlands are now made by all the village’s children and placed on war memorials for both world wars. When we saw how good the forecast was for the weekend, we decided on a short but very sweet trip all the way to Wareham Forest (about 10 miles from home!) Two nights in a lovely peaceful location, a stroll into Wareham yesterday for the market & a spot of lunch at The Granary, whilst watching the various forms of watercraft go by - perfect! On 31st May and 9th June, Holly will be demonstrating a range hand-building skills including impressing clay with textured items, then building up three-dimensionally from that point. Holly uses stoneware clay, oxides, glazes and crushed glass to evoke elements of the Jurassic coastline. Features of this within her pottery include fossils, shells, crustaceans, rocks and seaweed. Pots, platters and planters are part of her extensive range. All pieces are frost free. Watch this space for the schedule of all the pottery demos we have planned.

A fun trip to Little Tokens Pottery Studio in Wareham with my daughter where we painted plates. These were then fired in the kiln and we collected them a week later. We’ll definitely go again and there’s lots of choice of crockery and trinkets to decorate - this may be the start of a new crafting obsession and new crockery outfit for the kitchen 🤣! Any one can have a go from children to grown-ups and you can just drop-in impromptu too to their shop in Wareham (on the corner by the multi-traffic lights.
