The Amazon rainforest is one of the most diverse locations for species of fungi in the world.  It is estimated there are over 5.1 MILLION species of fungi in the Amazon Rainforest alone! Fungi play a crucial role in the rainforest as they break down dead plant materials releasing nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium that the plants then use for growth. MANY of these species have yet to be studied for medicinal purposes and many have yet to even be discovered. We must protect one of the most biodiverse places in the entire world, the Amazon Rainforest.  Join us in protecting this incredible place.  Visit the link in our bio to learn more and to donate to our conservation work: www.SacredAmazonia.org #fungi #amazonrainforest #endangeredspecies #conservation #restoration #reforestation #sustainability #healthy #amazonfires #climatechange #biodiversity #volunteer #wildfires #rainforest #amazonaid #savetheamazon #globalchange #amazonbiome #amazonbasin #Colombia #ecuador #brazil #peru #globalempowermentmission #gem #sacredamazonia

Illicit gold mining, often in protected areas and Indigenous lands where mining is prohibited, is a growing threat to those living and working in the Amazon rainforest. "A study by Brazil's state-run Fiocruz institute collected hair samples from about 287 Indigenous people in October 2022. They all tested positive for contamination by mercury, with around 11% of the samples presenting high levels of the heavy metal, which is used by wildcat miners in Brazil to separate gold from ore and earth." The Amazonian water lily is one of the largest of all waterlilies, with enormous leaves that can reach up to 12 feet wide!   It plays a crucial role within the Amazon,  anchoring the riverbed to prevent erosion and acting as a nursery for fish.  Through photosynthesis it also continuously enhances the water’s quality. The Amazon water lily is now being seen as a symbol of conservation.  Due to habitat destruction, deforestation, pullution and dam construction, the Amazon water lily is at high risk threatening not only it’s own species decline, but a decline in Amazon ecosystem as a whole. We must stop this! Who are the Brazilian Special-Forces Unit Fighting to Save the Amazon? "Within a few minutes of taking off again, we had entered Yanomami territory: a rolling green blanket, punctuated only occasionally by the bright-yellow flowers of an ipê tree. Deep in the forest, we set down at a gouged mining area. In a camp under the trees, we found a cook fire still burning. The miners clearly weren’t far away." The Camu Camu fruit is commonly grown in the Amazon region of Brazil, Peru, Colombia and Venezuela. The Camu Camu fruit and it’s seeds are rich in powerful antioxidants, including vitamin C and flavonoids.  Some research shows that Camu Camu may even be effective in fighting inflammation and reducing both blood sugar and blood pressure. Some communities believe Camu Camu can even regrow their economy, meaning if there is an abundance of the fruit, they can sell it in nearby cities and provide a living for their families. As you can see, there is a strong relationship with the Amazon Rainforest and the livelihood of its inhabitants.  Without the Amazon Rainforest, we would not only be losing the world’s largest rainforest, we would lose many species of medicinal plants  (some yet to even be discovered), as well as it’s inhabitants that fully rely on the rainforest for their survival. The Giant River Otter is the world’s largest otter, reaching up to 6 feet long! That’s more than twice the length of the North American river otter! They are extremely family-oriented, living in large groups along the river banks of the Amazon.   They are a top predator in aquatic systems, helping to control prey species population sizes, playing a HUGE role in keeping the river ecosystem in balance.  They are also considered an ‘indicator’ species, meaning their health gives us an idea of the overall health of the river ecosystem as a whole. The Giant River Otter is endangered with the total population of giant river otters in the wild as low as 5,000.  They are considered extinct in Uruguay and likely extinct Argentina.  This is due to the threats they continue to face, including habitat destruction and hunting for pelts. Real-world data has proven that private profits are below the socioeconomic cost of illegal mining, which results in the decline of social wellbeing. "The new research by the Conservation Strategy Fund (CSF) Brazil and published in January in the peer-reviewed journal Policy Resources is seen as bolstering the so-called Mining Impacts Calculator. The calculator was launched in Brazil in 2021 and adopted in Peru, Colombia and Ecuador in 2023. It was originally developed in partnership with Brazil’s Public Prosecutor’s Office not so much to pursue small-scale, illegal miners in the rainforest but rather purchasers of large quantities of illegal gold, with the aim of reducing demand for gold at its source." @JustinCatanoso a friend and colleague of Amazon Aid, shares details in the article "Amazon prosecutors get sharper impact tool to charge illegal gold dealers" published by @Mongabaylatam @ConservationStrategyFund @PedroGaspa @GinaDAmato @DeborahGoldemberg Photos: Enrique Ortiz @zitroge and Rhett A. We're celebrating International Women's Month by highlighting some of Amazon Aid's friends and colleagues, meet Jennis Warren, Fundraising Strategist. Jennis has spent her adult life working to protect the environment and the communities that rely on environmental efficacy work to live safe, clean, and green lives. Through her work forging relationships and connecting people to ideas, she has achieved meaningful and lasting impact while inspiring transformational giving. Throughout her youth in Alabama, Jennis was always constantly moved by both the beauty of the natural world around her and its fragility in the face of unfettered human impact. Prior to her work with Amazon Aid, Jennis served as Senior Development Officer for 13 years at the Southern Environmental Law Center, a celebrated non-profit dedicated to protecting the environment of the American Southeast through the lens of social justice. While there, she originated and led the Next30 Committee, an engaged board of 30 rising environmental philanthropists and leaders, creating and nurturing a culture of ongoing philanthropic support for generations to come. Jennis holds a BA from the University of Virginia and a law degree from the University of Alabama. When she’s not talking to anyone who will listen about the dangers of illicit gold mining in the Amazon, you can find her hiking up mountains, trying new recipes in the kitchen, or getting lost in the lush landscapes of South America. Jennis is fluent in Spanish and is currently traveling the world. #AmazonRainforest #AmazonAid #AA #WomenWhoLead #InspirationalWomen #Rainforests #Conservation #SaveTheAmazon #Climate #ClimateChange #Conservation #Environment #Environmentalism #WomenOfImpact #CelebratingWomen #PowerfulWomen

While many rivers in Amazonia are still relatively pristine, many are now threatened by the development of dams, roadways and other infrastructure. Pollution is also a significant threat, particularly due to runoff from nearby agricultural and industrial activities, as aquatic species are sensitive to changes in the biogeochemistry of their watershed. Mercury residue from illegal gold mining is an especially dangerous pollutant because it does not easily degrade, but instead accumulates in the sediments or is absorbed by algae and other plankton. When other organisms consume the plankton, the mercury is not excreted and is stored in their tissue. Therefore organisms higher up in the food chain tend to bioaccumulate mercury, and older, larger fish and predatory birds contain the greatest amounts of mercury. This is dangerous because mercury is a neurotoxin causing damage to the central nervous system, and poses a serious health threat to wildlife and humans that consume affected fish. #Amazon #AmazonRainforest #AmazonAid #AA #Rainforests #Conservation #SaveTheAmazon #Climate #ClimateChange #Conservation #RiverOfGold #Documentary #Environment #Environmentalism #worldwaterday

"The World’s Biggest Jeweler Now Only Sources Recycled Metals" By @ElizabethCPaton for @NYT @theofficialpandora just announced that it sources 100-percent-recycled silver and gold for its collections. We applaud Pandora for prioritizing the environment but caution that recycled doesn’t always mean responsible. In fact, dirty gold is sometimes tagged as “recycled” just weeks after extraction. Recycled or not, we urge companies to be vigilant and transparent about where they source their gold. @jvclegal Photos © @TomLindboe_photography #Rainforests #protectallrainforests #AmazonAid #Amazon #AmazonRainforest #AA #Conservation #SaveTheAmazon #Climate #ClimateChange #Conservation

For some Colombians, vows of mining reform are just a flash in the pan: Mercury remains widely used in gold mining across Colombia, and despite the country’s 2018 ban of the heavily poisonous metal, the industry is still struggling to become clean. A recent pledge to transform mining in Colombia promises to work with communities and to protect ecosystems. Amazon Aid's independent journalism initiative covers issues and highlights solutions connected to gold mining. Raising awareness supports Amazon Aid's expertise in educating audiences and uniting stakeholders to support transformative change. Systems change takes transparency, leadership, and the brave participation of those who currently benefit from the status quo. Take the case of @Tiffanyandco, as highlighted in a recent article Ernest Scheyder scheydere in @Time magazine. This riveting article shows how @TiffanyandCo joined forces with NGOs and other global relief organizations, ultimately pioneering the founding of a multi-stakeholder initiative to set best practices in mining, the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). We have so much to do to address extractive practices, but with leadership and examples like this, it is possible. It's Amazon Aid's approach. #amazonrainforest #amazonaid #savetherainforest #environmentalism #conservation #savetheamazon #cleangold

"Why Lula has failed to address the Yanomami genocide" by Gabriel Leão for @AlJazeeraEnglish shows how the humanitarian and environmental crisis in Indigenous lands in Brazil has deep roots and cannot be resolved with half-measures. When President Lula took office, he vowed to halt the crisis of illegal mining in Yanomami Territory. But, as this article and reporting by Amazon Aid's Charlie Lyons @cressly300 shows, the Yanomami continue to be plagued with illegal mining and health emergencies. Leão is right: there are no quick fixes. The Yanomami deserve sustained humanitarian support AND a guarantee that gold mined illegally in their territories never end up in the jewelry and technology we use every day. @kopenawad @hutukara_yanomami @cir.oficial Photo: A Yanomami child is fed while receiving healthcare in an accommodation used to shelter the sick, at the healthcare unit of the Auaris Base Hub, in Yanomami Indigenous land, Roraima state, Brazil, on January 10, 2024. “We’ve been fighting the government of Suriname for almost 25 years, for recognition of our land rights,” says Jupta Itoewaki, a leader of the Indigenous Wayana people. “The government and leaders don’t feel like they need to consult us.” As part of an ongoing series supported by Amazon Aid and published by Mongabay, renowned journalist and producer Charles Lyons investigated legislation in Suriname that could reshape Indigenous rights and, in turn, gold mining. Not only is mining Suriname’s biggest source of deforestation, but the mercury used in the extraction of gold has poisoned rivers and fish, threatening the livelihoods of the Indigenous people who rely on these natural resources. Amazon Aid, launched its program to support independent journalism that addresses the politics of gold mining in Amazon countries; gold mining’s impact on indigenous peoples; supply chains and corporate accountability, among other topics. Even within a country, stances around deforestation, extraction, and Indigenous sovereignty can vary from one administration to the next. In Latin America, illegal gold mining frequently occurs around protected areas, especially in protected indigenous territories. A recent report published by the World Resources Institute @worldresources found that about 6% of total indigenous land in the Amazon (about 14,300,000 hectares) directly overlaps with active mining concessions or ongoing illegal mining activities. The Potoo bird is a native to the Amazon Rainforest.  Instead of physical defense, these birds have become experts at hiding! They usually land on top of a dead tree branch and stand completely still. They keep their eyes closed, however they can still sense movement with their upper eyelids allowing them to watch for predators during the day! They play an important role in the health of the Amazonian ecosystem, and since they spend most of their time amongst the tree tops, their habitat is declining at an incredibly rapid rate.   We must continue to come together to save their home and the largest rainforest on our planet, the Amazon Rainforest. When gold aggregators combine gold from different sources, there is no way to ensure that the gold was mined legally or safely. Criminal actors often smuggle gold across borders into areas with lax legislation and enforcement, where the illicit gold is eventually exported to the formal market. This is why Amazon Aid is focused on gold mining and transformational change. Gold mining, particularly when unregulated, contributes to climate change, as the Amazon rainforest is a crucial carbon sink that stores from 90-140 billion tons. One study, conducted in the Peruvian Amazon where illegal mining has been particularly severe, found that in 2017 over 1 million tons of carbon were released in the region of Madre de Dios, equivalent to the emissions of about 250,000 cars in an average year. The Amazonian Royal Flycatcher is native to the Amazon Basin.  In some indigenous cultures they are considered a symbol of good fortune and are believed to posses mystical powers! They are considered nonmigratory, meaning they reside in their Amazon Basin habitat all year long. This make them even more susceptible to deforestation and habitat loss.
