Yesterday I caught wind of some #SolarWind shenanigans and decided to do something about it. Apparently it was going to be a very active night for the #AuroraBorealis which meant it was going to extend much further south than usual. So I hit the road around sunset. I decided I needed two things: a dark sky and a higher latitude. Without really knowing what to expect, or whether or not I’d even see anything I had two options: go north up 395 or out towards #Amboy and sacrifice some of that latitude. I had seen a post from about 34° which isn’t too far off of LA’s, so I figured Amboy would be best because it gave me a wider horizon. I wasn’t sure how far off in the distance I might need to be looking? As I drove along I-15 and eventually I-40 I was starting to get a little discouraged. With bright city lights, and eventually even just the traffic, and the little light in my car I wasn’t seeing anything. Was I really going to drive 200 miles out in the desert for nothing? But then I was on #Route66. I had separated from the 40 and was driving through the dark when I looked to my left. I saw light from roughly where Vegas would be, but something was different. That wasn’t Vegas. It was sorta moving! I stopped the car and let my eyes adjust. Sure enough, that was it! I was seeing the #NorthernLights right there in the #MojaveDesert! I raced over to #AmboyCrater just a few miles away, parked, and took in the show for a bit. It was a reddish hue that very slowly would morph a bit. Not much, but enough to notice. With the #NakedEye the sight was muted but clearly visible, but even just a couple second exposure was enough to bring out all the color! In the set of photos the selfie, and the more muted shot of #RoysMotel gives a good indication of what it looked like in person. The videos looked brighter last night. I made a couple more stops then called it a night. While driving along the freeway I snapped another out the passenger side window and despite its flaws, it ended up being one of my favorites. I am really glad I made the drive out to nowhere to see the #Aurora. I would have kicked myself otherwise. #AnayaOnTheRoad

An extinct volcano and views of the Bristol Mountains. This area feels like you’re on another planet. That’s really the only way it can be described. You’re not in the Mojave…or California…or Earth. The Amboy Crater pops out of a massive valley and former lake bed…apparently erupting 70,000 years ago and continuing to be active until 10,000 years ago. The lava flow broke through the West side of the caldera and covered 24 sq miles with basalt. Hiked around the top then explored the lava fields for a while. Wild that thousands of years ago this area was literally on fire. Explosions that sent up massive columns of gas and ash. Rocks being shot into the air and raining down. Lava spewing out and unleashing pyroclastic flows…large masses of hot rock fragments and gas that speed down a volcano’s slopes. A terrifying natural Armageddon. Thankful none of that was happening on this visit. The Geminids meteor shower the night of December 13th, 2023. About 45ish meteors can be seen in this composite I made, about 3 hrs of taking continuous exposures of 25 seconds hoping my camera would catch a shooting star 🌠 I'd been sitting on the pictures of the shooting stars but I had never made a composite with all the nights captures in one image, it seemed daunting. Tonight I finally tackled that challenge and while not too hard, it was certainly very very tedious. But this image is more to demonstrate that I can indeed successfully make a composite image of a metoer shower. I'll be ready for the next great Geminid meteor shower in December of 2025, when an estimated 145 meteors per hour will rain down across the sky. This meteor shower only boasted about 90-100 meteors per hour but there were so many I saw. It seemed like every single time I looked up I saw a meteor streaking across the sky, easily the best meteor shower I've witnessed my entire life, I can't imagine what 145 meteors per hour would look like. As an illustrator my job is to create images that tell the story of a person, event, product, or place - rather than to create photo realistic renderings. As I visit the National Monuments I’m always looking for a way to capture the feeling or ‘specialness,’ of these places in my watercolor sketches. Amboy crater, just one of the super cool features of Mojave Trails National Monument, was an interesting conundrum. The cinder cone and the surrounding lava field have a monolithic presence that is far larger than the thing itself. Because of the way it sits in the landscape, you can see it when you are still miles away. It looms. The opaque black of the lava rock sucks up light and feels alien, almost sinister. However, drawing a big black lump against the sky, wouldn’t create a particularly interesting image. I loved the idea of painting the crater rising up from the flooded plains around it (all those beautiful reflections to draw! all that light!) but torrential rain is a very rare occurrence and doesn’t represent the extreme, hostile heat that is the norm at this site. I found what I needed on Route 66, looking at the site from the north. Using a group of manmade structures - a rusty water tank, an old truck, a fence - as well as exaggerating the size of the cinder cone from that perspective. 2024-01 Mojave National Preserve, Amboy Crater, and The Kelso Dunes In August of 2020, a wildfire burned through the Joshua Tree woodland of Cima Dome in the Mojave National Preserve - one of my favorite places on earth. It started from a lightning strike. Fire Management quickly took note of the fire’s potential and ordered extra resources. Unfortunately, those resource requests were denied. Other fires were burning in California at the time, and since those fires were in populated areas, they threatened thousands of homes and businesses. A desert wilderness fire, while recognized as being serious, was not given high priority for limited firefighting resources. When the fire was fully contained, it had burned a total of 43,273 acres. It is estimated that as many as 1.3 million Joshua trees were killed in the fire and much of Cima Dome is now a graveyard of Joshua tree skeletons. Countless cactuses, bushes, shrubs, and grasses were also gone. While surveying the area immediately after the burn, many live animals were found, and very few dead ones. Desert tortoise mortality was approximately a dozen individuals. That part could have been much worse. While incredibly sad, life has returned. Some good and some bad. Certain plants in the area still had surviving root reserves however, invasive grasses have perpetuated the fire-grass cycle. One side of the road looks untouched, the other side barren. In slide one, this was the fourth time visiting this Joshua Tree skeleton. It’s now starting to fall apart. It’s haunting and beautiful and breaks my heart. The second to last slide is the volcanic cinder cone of Amboy Crater just down the road. I will climb that next visit. The last slide is of the Kelso Dunes which are massively tall.
