It may seem hard to believe but this small, remote valley and its hot springs were known as early as 1839 to Hudson's Bay company fur traders and independent trappers. It was they who first dammed Sulphur Creek with boulders to create small bathing basins. In 1913 Grand Trunk Pacific toyed with the idea of building "Chateau Miette" at the mouth of the Fiddle River and a monorail from there into the valley of the hot spings. A tumpline is a strap attached around a heavy load and rests against the forehead taking the load off the shoulders and utilising the spine. Voyaguers used the tumpline to carry the fur bales (weighing in at 100lbs each) that held their supplies, when they were portaging. Some portages could be as long as 16km! Beaver pelts were an enormous part of the North American fur trade. The beaver pelts were sold primarily for the making of hats. The pelt had the outer guard hairs removed and the under beaver "wool" removed to be felted. A chemical mixture including mercury was often used to make the felting process easier.
