Here in Bram Jenkins’s own words: This show is an intersection of several of my interests and dedications to crafts that I have been involved in throughout the chapters of my life. For over 2 decades I have been doing stone work as part of my “real job” and helping to keep me grounded as a human in this society. My affinity for working with rock has led me to an experience of relating to people in a way that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able to reach, and pays some of my bills. I started doing nightscape and landscape photography about 10 years ago as I have been in search of ways to deal with depression and not let my own mind destroy my life. This pairing of photography and my love of places like Canyonlands and the Bisti Badlands have allowed me to reconnect in the natural world and to extend those moments to other people and see how they connect to geologic phenomena and the night time sky. Shawn Lotze @s_lotze is the driving force behind our “Necessary Ritual” show. A member artist at Studio& for five years. As in these wood block prints, Shawn has interwoven printmaking and sculpture in several solo shows at & but is now pleased to host this fantastic group of printmakers. More on Shawn’s thoughts behind this show: Necessary Ritual The Patience of Printmakers I have slowly come to understand the preparations and action needed for pulling a print have become rituals to me. Once I start the process it will hold me until cleaning my last inked-up tool. The power of that hold fascinates me and is best described by Patrick Süskind from his novel “Perfume”. “for it was a matter of an artistic technique that incorporated equally one’s knowledge, imagination, and manual dexterity, while at the same time it anticipated on an ideal plane the enjoyment awaiting one from the final results.” Though out of context from a dark novel, the fully immersed action in this quote helped me understand why I developed these rituals and maybe part of why so many printmakers have patiently continued their practice for so long. The other fascinating parts of printmaking are more easily identified. My social media algorithm seems to love that magic moment when the paper is pulled from the plate and the print is revealed. The tactile accessibility and unique result is what drew me and many others to printmaking but the active process of simple but necessary tasks has in my view kept printmaking alive. Tony Holmquist @tonyholmquist is the final guest Studio& welcomes to the “Necessary Ritual” show. Professor at Fort Lewis, musician and master printmaker, Tony needs no introduction for local Durango but his recent shows have been on an international scale. These intaglio assemblages are glimpses into Tony’s studio practice. More will be on view this Friday the 18th 5-9 at Studio&. More on Tony and his work: Tony is a visual artist/printmaker and is also a musician who researches, interprets, and disseminates old-time music through the fiddle, banjo, guitar, ands mandolin. He currently resides in Durango, Colorado where he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Design at Fort Lewis College. “The process of creating is at the core of producing these printmaking works…..the materials in printmaking are very important to my creative exploration. A completed piece will continuously drive me to the next idea or concept, much like a composition of music. A print created in a traditional manner may be the end product, or it could be a starting point for a new piece. Currently, Joshua is an Associate Professor of Art at Colorado Mesa University where he teaches printmaking and drawing. A true artist of stage and presentation, we welcome Maureen back to grace the walls of Studio& this Friday the 18th 5-9. In Maureen’s own words: Challenge. Experimentation. Insight. Questioning. Adventure. Growth. Fun. These have been the mainstays in my art process going back to my early days as a practicing artist. I was schooled in traditional methods, incorporating line, form and composition into my psyche until it became second nature. Fortunately over the years I was blessed with wonderful teachers who also pushed me to reach beyond the safe boundaries of technique and commonality, and explore the deeper aspects of creativity. My work utilizes varied media, depending on what message or image I am trying to convey, and which medium best suits that need. I have never been able to limit myself to just one type of art form or method. I regularly go back and forth from abstract to representational, printmaking to assemblage, self-portrait to political statement. I find myself drawn to the unique textures and emotions that film offers. It stands out to me the extent to which film has the remarkable ability to elicit nostalgia, even in contemporary settings. When we see a photograph made from a negative, it can feel like hearing an old song. Fallow the link in our bio for more info but in Winks own words. SOLITARY MOMENTS Photography usually doesn’t get to start with a blank canvas. Instead, it starts with a chaotic reality, from which distractions must be discarded so a certain kind of simplicity remains. In terms of subjects, my photography is all over the map. Natural landscapes, urban landscapes, street photography, seascapes, sunrises and sunsets, stars, night, sport, architecture. If there is a consistency it is probably the visual relationships between different shapes. Even that is a stretch. I rarely delete from my image library as I often need time to recognize the shape relationships. Then I begin to understand how the photograph should look. I like bold colors and strong contrasts. I favor the detail over the big picture. I like lots of interplay between highlight and shadow. For this Recess Gallery presentation I have selected images that struck me as having a feeling of being comfortably alone. I invite you, the viewer, to explore and imagine.
