The Giant Willow Aphid Wasp (Pauesia nigrovaria) is establishing itself well into Christchurch. This species was deliberately introduced in 2020 to control the Giant Willow Aphids, which cover some branches of various Willow species. Pauesia will sting the Aphid, and deposit her egg inside. The egg hatches eats the internals, and then bores a hole for its escape. In this photo, you can see the hole where the Wasp larvae had eaten their way through two 'mummified' individuals in the shot. A live Aphid is in the middle. I don't know how to feel about the introduction of these wasps. On the one hand, They slow down the establishment of wilding Willow trees, which gives native trees a better chance to establish. PL/ Eng To już ten czas aby zadbać o ochronę roślin przed mszycą. Po kilku latach (niestety raczej nieudanych) ekologicznych sposobów zwalczania mszycy chyba jesteśmy na dobrej drodze. W poprzednim roku zawiesiliśmy bardzo dużo żółtych wstążek aby przywabić biedronki (pojawiła się ich garstka). Zrobiliśmy dla nich domki, zostawiliśmy liście pod grabem oraz nie ścinaliśmy pokrzywy aby miały gdzie zimować. I wiecie, że się udało?! Mamy baaaardzo dużo biedronek! A ponieważ zabezpieczyliśmy drzewka przed mrówkami boimy się by nie umarły z głodu ;) Tu mszyca zaatakowała nam śliwkę, jeszcze zanim ochroniliśmy drzewka, ale wszystko wskazuje na to, że ta mszyca zniknie raz dwa ;) Eng/ It’s time to take care of plant protection against aphids. After a few years (unfortunately rather unsuccessful) of ecological methods of combating aphids, we seem to be on the right track. Last year, we hung a lot of yellow ribbons to attract ladybugs (a handful appeared). We made houses for them, left leaves under the hedge, and didn’t cut nettles so they had a place to hibernate. And you know what? It worked! We have a lot of ladybugs! The adults are great pollinators (Slide 2) Their larvae (slide 3) are the best at clearing pests. Ants. Milking. Aphids. 🤯 It’s that time of year again when I am on the lookout for one of my favourite wildlife spectacles! (And I can see it in my own little garden). If you see a ‘herd’ of aphids on a plant, look closely and you might see some ant ‘farmers’ tending to them. The ants stroke the aphids to encourage them to release their sweet honeydew which the ants lap up. In return, the ants protect the aphids from predators. It’s a win-win situation, or a ‘mutualistic relationship’ in science terms. But there’s more to it! Ants will move aphids to the juiciest parts of a plant, and will carry aphid eggs with them when the ant colony moves to a new location. Ants will even carry the aphids to their nests at night or over the winter period, to keep them safe! This is why I love the world of insects. You are always rewarded for taking a closer look ❤️. You'd be forgiven for mistaking this little insect for a tiny piece of cotton, but they are actually a common pest that causes a sticky mess. Here's what you need to know: 🌳 How to identify them: These non-native insects choose hackberry trees as their exclusive host. They are sap suckers, which means they feed on trees' phloem. The insects are about 1/10 inch in diameter and are whitish or bluish, often looking like tiny pieces of fluffy cotton or snow. They produce a waxy substance that covers their bodies. Winged forms have black borders along their forewing veins and alternating dark and light bands on their antennae. 🌳 How to spot an infestation: The first sign of an infestation is often sticky honeydew, a sugary waste product the insects produce. It is also common to find sooty black mold growing on areas covered in honeydew. The hackberry aphids themselves may look like small pieces of cotton on the backs of common hackberry leaves or in the air. 🌳 What to do about them: First, don't worry - these insects don't pose a long-term threat to the health of your trees. They are generally just a nuisance, particularly in urban or suburban areas. There are chemical control options available, but the aphids are notoriously difficult to eradicate. The most effective means of control is an integrated pest management approach, involving a combination of chemical and non-chemical control methods. If you plan to chemically treat your hackberry trees for this pest using a systemic insecticide, now is the time to do it - shortly after the leaves appear.
