For 23 years each fall I would go out and place my hands on this beautiful tree and thank it. I would offer tobacco and wine and ask it to remain our guardian throughout the long winter to come. 4 years ago it dropped a HUGE branch during the winter. It took two days to cut it up and remove it. As the last 4 years have gone, we noticed more and more signs. Last year mushrooms began appearing near the base of the tree and along our lawn. Branches kept dropping, the top canopy did not leaf out fully, and it dripped a sap all over the cars and the sidewalks all summer. That is a clear case of honey fungus which rots the roots into the tree causing the tree to be disstabilized. There was no choice and it had to come down. knowing the mayor very well in our town since he went to school with my children, I called him and we talked about it. It came down on Friday and I stood on the porch and cried.. We counted rings after it was done, this tree was more than 80 years old. Found this guy laying in the ditch after he was viciously ripped out of the ground. Loaded him in the back of my Jeep with all the wind and began tree-age. The main root was intact and all the lower roots were okay. After a good soak through the night I dug a two foot deep by four foot hole in the mud and placed on my farm the following night. Added 2 ft of new dirt today in the rain. He's doing well and is looking green. And at least now he can see his parents. We need trees. Seems sensless to uproot a perfectly good tree. ⢠F E R N ⢠Going to rattle off a quick black & white series in the next couple days! Been experimenting with shooting for editing to B&W and have been surprisingly pleased with the results. It's a practice that requires a lot more attention to shades, highlights and simple tone in general. Without color to grab viewer's eyes lighting becomes more pivotal, and textured details more prevalent. It's a unique dynamic where certain aspects of the art are eased while others become more difficult, a delightful conundrum. ⢠I R I S ⢠The irises are in and blooming! Rimming the pond below the sensory garden our Iris collection has taken off! I've always loved irises for their whacky array of colors and odd little beards and lobes. They are flowers with a lot of character and offer some decorative flare to any garden bed. They take their name from the Greek goddess of rainbows and grow perennially from either bulbs or rhizomes (I believe ours are bulbous). Their flower shape and pollen collecting (stigmatic) organs lend themselves to specific classifications of pollinators that are often very specialized. Be sure to have a diverse selection of pollinator friendly plantings around for the best Iris blooms possible! Shot on assignment for the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.
⢠C R A N E S ⢠Tapped into my inner Nat Geo yesterday and spent some time wallowing in the meadow shooting the Sandhill Cranes! These beautiful birds aren't normally common nesters in Minnesota, but frequent the northern parts of Wisconsin and the Dakota's. However, we have a nesting pair on the grounds at the Arb this year! I couldn't find junior on this outing but with some luck (and a longer lens) it could be a possibility moving forward đ¤. Their call (one of several I believe, could be wrong) is a loud elongated garble, and makes them hard to miss if communicating among each other. Their young, called colts, are a sandy purplish-maroon color and mature quickly after hatching. They are magnificent birds and we are blessed to have them walking amidst us at the Arb! Last picture is a personal win; I found my first Morel Mushrooms while wading out of the swamp onto dry land under a moist but sunny Aspen tree! ⢠L A D Y S L I P P E R ⢠It's lady slipper season at the Arb! The yellow lady slippers are up and the showy (pink, and State flower) are just around the corner. Come find them in the Wildflower Garden. Lady slippers are a part of the orchid family Cypripedium, and are most often found among the woodland and forests in moist soil. While they are abundant in some parts of the world their populations have dwindled in others and are often afforded legal protection from harvest and alteration by anyone other than specialized experts. In Minnesota, state statute 18H.18 protects our state flower and other orchid and bromeliad populations. Remember to marvel, but do not disturb these natural beauties!
