I have been busy painting florals 💐and landscapes🌋 lately. I’m still working on abstracts but that’s not where my focus is right now. The experiments to find the best surfaces for my 9X5 submissions continues! I want to do two, one as a watercolouir and the other as a soft pastel. So I made up three styles of surface for each media to test on some scrap plywood. First the surface for watercolour W1 is just the white acrylic, which acted a lot like Yupo paper. W2 is the same white acrylic covered with a thin coat of normal Gesso. This has improved colour intensity and sharper hard edges than the acrylic only surface. W3 is the white acrylic again but this time I’ve used 50% transparent gesso, into 50% normal gesso. This has the most texture on the surface but the paint goes on nicely and is also nice and intense it is also easy to lift off So both W2 and W3 would be ok, except that when I painted watercolour washes the washes picked out the brush marks when I painted on any of the surface. Next trial I need to test out applying the gessos with a foam roller. The pastel surface trials where not as successful P1 was the best and just using some old derivan background paint (china red). It add a nice amount of tooth to the surface but the coloured ground made the pastel colours sing. P2 started with white acrylic and then standard gesso, the least successful P3 again white acrylic the 50% transparent gesso & 50% standard gesso, good coverage with light touch of the pastel but colours looked pale. I tested a variety of pastels from very soft to hard and even conte pencils. It's going to be a challenge to get details in such small panels with pastels and I need to experiment further with “background” paints and "watercolour ground" Stay tuned for more experimental fun 🌝 #9X5 #gesso #watercolour #pastel #pastel #artexperimenting #surfaceground #artfun
This was an interesting experiment. I first drew the whole scene in white gel pen. Then I tried to go over it with paint pens. Unfortunately the gel pen didn’t cooperate with the paint pen and I struggled a lot. In the end it turned out okay and I learned some lessons. On our recent trip to Scotland we visited Kilmartin Glen, a fascinating area with one of the richest concentrations of prehistoric monuments and historical sites in Scotland. There are over 800 monuments within a 6 mile radius! @kilmartinmuseum is located at the centre of the area and is a working museum that collects & displays archaeological finds from across Argyll. Recenting re-opened it is an amazing place which displays ancient artefacts close to the sites on which they were found. My eye was caught by the early bronze age clay pots and the intricate patterns and shapes they featured. I have been enjoying sketching them and translating some of their decorative markings into gel-printed papers, adding extra detail with my new (a great birthday gift from my husband) ArtGraf pigment blocks. I then cut out a template shaped like one of the pots and used it like a view finder over my printed papers. I’ve just started experimenting with acrylic paints. Liking them so far - I mean, they dry! Quickly! At this stage I’ll just be using them in some underpainting as I have limited colours. Art supplies are an investment and it’s not a light decision to switch materials. I also need to investigate environmental impacts, I’m aware that art materials are often not good for the planet (plastics, solvents, chemicals etc)… there’s a lot to weigh up. On the up side I feel like I’m making pieces that people will treasure and keep for a long time - so hopefully the impacts are minimal. The bonus of using a paper that is really strong for cyanotype making is that I can create tie dye papers that I can use in collage projects or book papers. This is tea bag paper (see my bio) with marbles and rubber bands to create these.
