🖤🤍 Wildlife Wednesday - Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa) 🖤🤍 Snowy clouds of flowers, spiny thorns, and berries for a boozy purpose – blackthorn is a fantastic plant! This tree is native to the UK and can live for around 100 years. They do amazingly well here on Gigha, and make a fabulous hedging plant, which is exactly why we have ordered apx. 2000 to build the bulk of our hedgerow project here on island. Choosing hedging species that are favourites for our wildlife means we aren’t only connecting habitats and providing natural boundaries, but we are providing nesting, foraging and sheltering opportunities for an array of wildlife, and blackthorn certainly fits this bill with its spiny branches, beautiful flowering capacity and its density. These trees are also pretty fantastic when harvested, this tree has been used for many purposes throughout time including making traditional walking and riding sticks, Irish shillelaghs (an ancient weapon), witches wands and staffs, and of course alcoholic beverages such as gin. Highland Games athletes unleash the power and precision of the Sheaf Toss: A Highland Games Spectacle. For generations, the Sheaf Toss has been a cherished tradition at the Highland Games. In this captivating event, participants toss a hefty 16-pound (7 kg) burlap sack filled with straw over a bar set horizontally above them. Each contender gets three opportunities to propel the sack over the bar without any contact. With each round of attempts, the bar's height is raised incrementally, narrowing down the field until only a single athlete remains standing. Phase 1 of 'Project Fireplace' complete! We mentioned the pallets from our wedding would be put to good use...well here it is - our makeshift log store! We promised ourselves we need to get our fire installed ready for winter this year because quite frankly, we cannot justify the costs of LPG gas to provide the full weight of our heating anymore! As a one of half of us is a Tree Surgeon so access to wood for fuel is not an issue, however we need somewhere it can be stored to season and dry out plus an area for chopping ready for the fire. To summarise, cleared the ground, laid teram membrane, added chipping from garden clearance onto the terram, laid pallets, inserted posts (mostly found in our garden) and set structure (washed up on shore) before topping with the corrugated iron (needed gone by @theblairmore - thank you ladies).
