🌳 Happy Arbor Day 🌳 Today, I thought I would share a white cherry blossom branch that was part of a larger body of work commissioned by a collector from 2 years ago (and still one of my all-time favs!)
I know it's a cliche, but traveling changes you. I think it's because you remove yourself completely from the environment that made you believe you are who you are. Returning "home", to Germany, has got me feeling all kind of feelings. I feel more foreign in my hometown than in foreign countries. Somehow I don't feel like I fit in anymore. This period of my life has me questioning basically everything. Maybe that's a thing going into your thirtys. I don't know. Anyway, this painting is a result of figuring out who I am. When you completely disconnect from the people, the places, the customs, the culture, everything... it gives you an opportunity to see your true self more clearly, without the environment telling you you're something else. You're basically a blank page. And therefore able to become someone new, someone you haven't been before. This reminded me a lot of the pupa stage of a butterfly. It may look like nothing is going on but big changes are happening inside. I would love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments. How one idea leads to another... I don't think. It sounds weird but when I start painting I first don't know why I feel drawn to certain colors, forms and compositions. I let my intuition guide me through the process. I feel. I paint. I create. I don’t think. After some first layers I evaluate my work and then I clearly see the meaning behind each piece and the greater story my subconsciousness wants to tell. While a few new paintings come to life I realize that there is a story that connects my last collection THROUGH THE SEASONS with the next one A GENTLE AWAKENING. My art is always inspired by the nature that surrounds me and that means that my paintings also refer to the season we are currently in. In the Through the Seasons Collection I concentrated on a color palette of earth tones, inspired by the leafless forest during winter. Then the last weeks, when spring arrived, everything turned green again. I enjoyed observing the little buds as they opened slowly and delicately. I worked on a new color palette of greens and neutrals. For me, it's a very special moment of the year when the plant world comes to life. When the sun regains its strength and rain showers make everything sparkle. It makes me feel alive again. I saw the greater picture, I realized that the two collections are connected with each other. A gentle awakening... I am curious to see what thoughts and feelings the works in this series will bring to light during and after painting. Emotions can run high as I’m creating. There are times of extreme joy and excitement. And there are also times of frustration and disappointment. All are part of the process of creating. And growth occurs from allowing myself to fail forward. Art mimics life in so many ways. This piece has been one that has been a challenge. I’ve spent hours on it without a finished piece to show for it. I’ve had a vision and been challenged on multiple attempts to execute that vision. With each attempt, I learn and I grow. This attempt will also need to be scrapped. The paper has been overworked and has thinned in places. I’ll get closer with the next attempt, maybe I’ll even nail it. While I’m disappointed with this piece, I’m also excited as I’m getting closer with each try towards my desired outcome.
