Today is the final desinstallation day of Artomatic @artomatic_dc. I deainstalled my room last week, but I wanted to wait to say bye until today. Exploring @artomatic_dc was a profound experience. Eight floors of raw art, photography, and sculpture in a space that once was an office building. The contrast between the bold, outspoken art and the building's history felt deeply metaphorical. Walking through, I could sense its past life and witness how it had been broken down and transformed into something beautiful. I don’t know how we almost missed @artomatic_dc, which closed last night after a 7-week run. This is the first time it’s back since 2017. It is such a great idea: 800+ artists take over an empty office building to show their work—this year, across 300,000 square feet and 8 floors of brutalist glory between @goldentriangledc and @foggybottomdc. There were also some performance stages and workshop spaces on several floors — Aidan, as always, was mesmerized by music. We only got to see 3 floors. It felt like such a great community space. We are definitely fans. 1-2. 1001 - In Our Own Image, 2024 by #antonymaderal 3. #BambooShowers by @sondranarkin #sondranarkin — the soundscape was an unexpected pleasure 4. So I finally got a chance to pop over at @artomatic_dc, and it was really special to see the cicada installation @resonant_space had helped create along with @damordini . Thankfully it wasn’t too busy when we went, and I hopefully didn’t concern too many people while crying and looking at the cicadas haha I became emotional as I realized that was probably the closest I’d get to see Barry perform something again. I remember seeing the first installation of it at @soundscenefest that year when it was held at union market and getting to go see how excited and proud Barry was. I also enjoyed getting to hear Barry’s updates on how the project was going each week when we had our regular Sunday DC Modular Collective zoom call during the pandemic. There was another incredibly touching surprise of another artist’s installation on the 8th floor dedicating her space to a Barry memorial. He truly did make so many connections and positive impact seemingly everywhere he went. Really thankful for all the time I got to spend with him and know him, even if it was not nearly as long as what I hoped for. Barry was always very kind to me, was incredibly supportive, and taught me a lot. He helped give me the confidence to actually get out and play instead of just bleep bloop in my basement forever. Really thankful for everyone who considers themselves apart of our @dcmodularsociety and helps foster a welcoming and encouraging community. I know that would mean so much to Barry. ❤️🩹 If yall haven’t, also highly recommend checking out @artomatic_dc before it closes at the end of tomorrow! I like objects, but it is better when things are associated with a story, that the object remains linked and remains a good memory forever, better if they are related to art. Chris (my brother in art) and I were taking this painting class and he didn't like his canvas, he gave it to me and I turned it into something that inspired the vejigante series. I like that it even has some humor, as when Chris was guided by the hand of another artist to guide the brush. I like that I care about my culture. The vejigante is a demon figure from medieval Spanish folklore that has become a staple of Puerto Rican Carnival culture. During Carnival festivals, the vejigante dress in a horned mask called a careta, and flowing costume to join the crowds in singing and dancing. The careta masks are a cultural symbol of Puerto Rico. On my first day back at Artomatic, a Brother In Art gave me a hug. It was a tight hug, he hugged me for more than a second. It was an innocent hug. A hug of friendship. A hug of love. I needed that hug.Then there are the flowers that a Sister in Art gave me. She @zhenya.studio) gave them to me at Artomatic. I brought them home because I wanted to see them every day. Since I haven't been cooking they are placed on top of my stove. And when I see them when I walk out the door I feel visible. Random acts of kindness come from the heart because there is no purpose in performing them other than to be kind. II really appreciate that act of kindness. I needed it. The mouth can say anything. Action says a lot. Painting, my love of art and friendships and experiencing random acts of kindness. Those things have been my therapy, my recharge. I'm going to perform essentially my entire catalogue of poetry at @artomatic_dc this Friday at 4:45. "Take a journey through time with original poetry written over the last ten years by filmmaker and writer Jenna Cipolloni. The act will start with a full performance reading of the publication “School Nights,” exploring youthful connection and recalling the gravity of adolescence in works written from 2014 to 2019, and will then transition to the more recent politically-minded works of adulthood in poetry that starts by navigating our place within personal relationships and ends with navigating our place within the world. Accompanied by ambient video which rings to nostalgic sensibilities."
