May 3, 2023 Woke up to go see the most famous castle in Germany. The 2hr train ride was beautiful with so many yellow wildflowers in the fields. We arrived in a cute German town called Füssen and bused to another town called Hohenschwangau. A lot of European cities are walkable, Berlin is not one of these.🤭 It is huge, we attempted walking between sites and this was a big mistake, they have a very efficient tram system which you can use or you can ride a bike 🚲. . . May 1 & 2 2023 Off to Europe! At the airport my family surprised me to send me off, so sweet! Flew to Calgary and met up with Lydia & Tryphena, first time all being together since Costa Rica in 2020!! We had an 8hr flight to Paris and layover there for 3hrs. Our gate changed on us without notifying us so we missed our flight and had to rebook one… not ideal but thankfully we got on another and had another 3hr wait. Finally we arrive in GERMANY after an 1.5hrs flight. So glad to be in Munich, but our bags were still in Paris… we ended up getting them the next day. So glad it all worked out, I mean what is travelling for if there isn’t an adventure throughout it! Europe 2023 Wow, I can’t believe it’s almost been a year already from what was a trip of a lifetime! I absolutely love moseying through so many cute books shops - both big and small… there are so many cute & quirky ones scattered through the neighborhoods! Backpacking honeymoon 1998 cont’d… I searched and searched for belgian waffles 🧇. I LOVE food. They were more popular at street vendors than sit down restaurants 🤷🏻♀️. I don’t even remember if they were worth the two hour walk about. The third pic is our view out of our hostel. From my diary “there were four people from Australia staying in our room last night and they came home drunk at about 5:30 am. One guy was snoring so loud! Ken was sleeping on the bottom bunk where this guy was also and could hear Ken first hit him with a pillow and then it turned to Ken smacking his feet, really hard! But he still wouldn’t wake up! We both couldn’t sleep until Ken whacked him a good one and he turned over! I was laughing so hard.” 🤭 Shea told me just now that I was giving the brows in the one pic of me infront of a building. She was surprised that I gave them even back then. Lol. I told her I was searching for waffles…. And in the one pic, you would think that I was taking a pic of that couple but they were just in the way. Hahahaha! Wouldn’t they love to know that this picture exists of them! Brussels was ok. We learned that “strong” beer meant just that. Alcohol %!! Ken didn’t know that he was drinking the strongest beer all night…. I remember the staff laughing at how drunk he was getting from drinking “beer”. And my Bacardi and coke had probably two drops of coke 😉 I think it was in Brussels too where I asked a bartender for a Budweiser and he said “a water?” And I was confused because I thought he heard me. I said “no, a Budweiser please”. He said “ya, you mean water”. 🤣. But to be honest, I’ve never had that dying urge to travel the world that a lot of people seem to have. But I love adventure. I love meeting new people, seeing new cultures, trying different foods. Second day and second stop of the trip; Bordeaux, the world capital of wine. The hostel we stayed was the Central Hostel of Bordeaux, a small yet modern hostel with a view of the cafes filled with music, laughter and chatter. After checking in the hostel we went on an orientation walk tour and saw the Tour Pey-Berland tower, St Andrew’s Cathedral and of course the contemporary World Heritage site Miroir d'Eau, a magical reflection of Bordeaux’s 18th century façade. I totally fell in love with this beautiful city and it’s stunning monuments. It wasn’t the most ideal route/flight but for a flight under $100 to Europe, why TF not? The day came faster than expected so here I am embarking on my first European world tour. And unlike my usual travels/trips, I did not plan anything other than my first stop - Naples, Italy 🇮🇹 home of the 🍕. Sunday slow stitching story: this UFO from 1989 is finally mounted and hanging! I bought the kit at Sissinghurst Castle and stitched it all over the UK and Europe while backpacking with @thebenchdog when we were young and lovely. It stayed in the UFO pile for more than 30 years while I wondered about the best way to mount and frame it. Last day in Rome - and Europe! On the list: the Pantheon and the Galleria Doria Pamphilj. And of course, shopping 😉 The pantheon has been on my bucket list for a while, and I finally got to cross it off. The oldest ‘church’ in Rome, even though it was originally Pagan in origin. But just seeing the oculus was breathtaking. And the final resting place of one of the great Renaissance artists - Raphael. The next stop was the Galleria Doria Pamphilj - a private art collection and gallery by a prominent papal and princely family in Italy. And princely is an understatement. It was an unassuming building walking up to it, along the Via del Corso, and then once you’re inside, you see Titian’s, Rembrandts, Raphael’s, Van Brueghel’s, Ancient Greek sculpture. The list goes on. Suffice it to say, my Art History itch was scratched again - Italy does not disappoint. And to round it off, we spent the afternoon wandering the streets and shopping 💁♀️ Tomorrow we return home - after a very long flight. We played tourist today! We started by hitting the Porta Portese market early this morning, which is a 2 km long flea market. Let’s just say, the Italians were out hunting for bargains, cause it was crazy! Super fun, but wow, you do not get in between a Nonna and haggling a fair price 😂 We then visited the Vatican, purely with the intention of just seeing it from a distance. But as we got closer, there were absolutely no lines (ON A SUNDAY??!!). Like, none. So we literally just followed a group of people, got into St. Peter’s square, and then continued following the people into St. Peter’s Basilica. Whole thing took 5 minutes from the square entrance to the basilica. Because we were not even remotely planning on being able to get in - my sleeved shirt was still too risky for the guards, so I received a beautiful lapulus lazuli shawl made of the finest silk…. On the way out - not so easy. We had to push through the masses that congregated for the mass while we were exploring the basilica, for the Pope’s sermon. But that meant that we also got to see the Pope 😅 We then made it to the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, which was amazing. We took our time, and thanks to Kyle’s dedication before our trip, we also got the underground tour tickets. WHICH WAS SO COOL. Jacob, Kyle and I split off from the parentals today and had a Florence 2.0 day! We got tickets to go up the dome of the Santa Maria del Fiore, or Brunelleschi’s dome. A huge bucket list item for me, and it did not disappoint. Did my art history minor come out in full force - absolutely. I gushed at the herringbone brick lay while walking up the stairs to the dome. Not ashamed to admit it. We also went into the museum (absolutely amazing!) where we saw Michelangelo’s Pietà, the last sculpture he was making before he died. As such, it’s an unfinished sculpture, but you got to get up close and personal with his chisel marks. AND we saw a Donatello, my first sculpture I’ve seen in person from that particular Ninja Turtle. I was in Renaissance heaven today. We wandered around Florence some more as well, and we came across a few wine windows!! We also went to a perfumery, where we were enjoying smelling everything. Florence/Firenze was on the agenda today. And I wish I could stay here forever 😍 Luckily, Kyle, Jacob and I are going back on Thursday to do the Santa Maria del Firenze complex, which has always been on my bucket list (and climb the dome!!). We saw the ‘fake’ David, but honestly, it’s an exact replica, in the spot it was meant to be, and it looks pretty damn good to me still. We also grabbed a sandwich at All’Antico Vinaio, which was amazing, and had a picnic lunch in the Barbini Gardens while overlooking the Renaissance city. We ended our day in Florence at the Leonardo Museum, which was mind blowing - how can one man be that smart and gifted!! Tomorrow will be wine tastings, pool cooldowns and more wine tastings. We all made it to Tuscany!! Specifically, Panzano in Chianti. And oh boy - is it ever ugly here… 😉 Yesterday was just a relaxing day. We went to the Panzano market, ate local foods, relaxed by the pool, and just admired the absolute stunning beauty of this place. Way more pictures to come, as we’re in Tuscany for a week and staying in a 1000 year-old farmhouse. Today’s hike was a bust, for 5 reasons: blisters, shin splints, toe nails, hip misalignment, and then rain. It was supposed to be a 600 m straight descent, but when the cowbells woke us up this morning we truly didn’t think it was worth risking further injury in such poor weather and visibility. But in all honesty, we got absolutely everything that we wanted out of this trek that we were hoping to, and more. So as a ‘treat’ to ourselves, we took the Gondola down to the bottom of the mountain (didn’t see a whole lot 😂) to Lake Gosau, then bussed to our hostel in Bad Goisern. Which then gave us the rest of the afternoon to explore Hallstatt! I truly did not know that this place was a UNESCO world heritage site, or that it was the most instagrammed place in the world (I guess I’m supporting that claim with this post). But due to the weather, there weren’t many people, which made exploring it even better! I went into the Ossuary, which is where habitants of the town can request their bones to be placed after 15-20 years in a tomb. This ensures that there is still enough space for burials in the future, since there’s not a lot of real estate for graveyards in this Salt-mining town. Today could be summarized as “onwards and upwards”, or “the pain was worth the reward”. We hiked from Abtenau to the Gablonzer Hütte, a day that we knew would be grinding but we would feel so good having completed it. And while Google teased us with ‘16 km and 900 m elevation gain’, it ended up being 19 km and over a 1000 m of elevation gain. At one point we were literally crawling up the path on the ski hill that connects to the Hütte. As hard as it was, and as hard as I panted, we enjoyed every moment because the views were spectacular. Well, we were right - it was a wet one. And honestly, a lot of fun 😂. This section ended up being more of a trek and an adventure than planned, due to some construction and poor google maps directions. So although we were anticipating 18 km, it ended up being 21 km. Using satellite images and some good old orienteering we eventually made our way to the small town of Abtenau. Even with a stop to change into dry socks, and another to wring out the new ones, my feet were still swimming in my shoes (last image as proof). First day of the trek is in the books!! It was our biggest distance today (we knew we would have fresh feet and naïvety to bolster us) of 24 km. And while Jacob took it as a workout (we only met up with him at some stops), Kyle and I had a really nice walk!! We went from Salzburg to the small town of Golling, which took us along the Salzach River, through fields, and even a cold-water pond, which we totally took advantage of. Beautiful hike, and the beer/radlers tasted fantastic at the end ❤️ And the Ibuprofen will also be welcome 😂 We’re enroute to Abtenau tomorrow, but it unfortunately looks like it will be a very rainy one. After picking up a hitchhiker (*read as ‘Jacob’) we eventually trained our way to Salzburg. It was a relatively eventful train ride - as we had to bus between two stops due to ‘unforeseen circumstances’. And to get to said bus, we had to jump onto the tracks from our carriage because our train was too big for the actual station. And it’s quite a jump!! But all was good - we still made our connection and got to the beautiful city of Salzburg, Austria ❤️❤️ We explored Old Town and then Salzburg palace. Which was a hike and a half just to walk up to - but the views were absolutely worth it. We even saw a thunderstorm roll in over the Alps! Unfortunately for me - the castle had a special exhibition on Marionettes. I think Jacob and Kyle enjoyed laughing at me more than the actual exhibit though… 😤 As a treat - we also went to the ‘Von Trapp family house’ that they used in the Sound of Music. Which is actually a palace, and now a hotel. We looked up the price for a night, and there is no way in hell we could ever afford it 😂 Tomorrow we trek our way to the small town of Kuchl, nestled in the foothills of the Alps. We made it to Prague!! After arriving late afternoon, we met up with Jacob who gave us a local inside tour of the city - including a stop at the famous Hemingway Bar, where Kyle got the fanciest drink of the group. This morning we wandered around the Prague Castle complex, and explored the nooks and crannies. Including all the quirky artwork. We unfortunately got an up-close view of the ‘Baby tower’, which is the creepiest electronics tower I’ve ever seen. (No photos for my own sanity). We’re taking Prague ‘easy’, as we’re gearing up for an intense few hiking days with Jacob in Austria. It was a day of death today (my pre-teen girl macabre obsessions were out in full force)!! We went to the Paris Catacombes earlier in the day, and wow. Just wow. If you haven’t been, and are able to go to Paris, make this a must-see. We then hit up the Montmartre district, including the cemetery. Which was also fantastic. We attempted to find the tomb of the French Impressionist painter Edgar Degas, but were unsuccessful. *Le Sigh* Montmartre can be summed up as ”Old Paris charm with daunting staircases” 😂 Unintentionally we stumbled upon Sacré-Coeur, purely because Kyle kept choosing to go up the steepest staircases he could find on the side streets. So we stumbled upon the backside of the Cathedral, but enjoyed the front view as well 😉 Kyle also played tour guide by pointing out where John Wick had an intense fight scene 🤦♀️ Speaking of front view - we could only see the façade of Moulin Rouge. Unless someone wants to donate $250 to us, it was out of our price range. Kyle was hoping to ‘work’ his way in by showing some leg, but he only got a few glares 🤷♀️ Vimy Ridge and Arras tomorrow, which I am exceptionally excited for. Wawel Castle was the residence of the royal family of Poland till 1795. But before that a mythical dragon terrorised King Krak's city and required offerings of cattle. No knight could defeat it until a young shoemaker Skuba outsmarted the dragon by offering it a doctored ram stuffed with sulphur. The dragon caught the bait and immediately felt a burning in the throat. To quench its thirst, the Dragon started to drink from the Vistula River. However, as water cannot extinguish burning sulphur, the gases produced by the fires inside him made the beast explode. 🐉 This story originated from a bundle of bones hanging on the Castle entrance. The bones are probably fossilised mammoth, whale or rhinoceros bones.
