Richthofen's 30th Lt. Richard P. Baker, a Canadian by birth, had limited flying time in a Spad when encountering Richthofen that day. Richthofen and his Staffel encountered the 19th Squadron near Givenchy on March twenty-fourth, close to noon on a very fine day. Along with this squadron were two French Spads, and Richthofen, who had never encountered this fighter until now. The Spad was a much quicker plane and extremely handy, having taken over for the plodding B.E. 2 since the end of 1916. According to the Baron's combat report, it was a long dog fight with the German Ace trying to get the upper hand. Eventually, he did it by putting a few rounds in No. A6706's fuel tank, causing the propeller to stop and the plane to go down. Baker had been wounded in the knee and was now descending into German territory when he landed behind German lines. Bake's plane came down and landed, overturning upside down in a shell hole. Lt. Baker was taken prisoner and repatriated at the end of 1918. 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #spad #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #albatrosd.III

Richthofen's 29th The twenty first of March, 1917, was not good flying weather that only slightly improved in places in the afternoon. Reports had come in that despite the bad weather and strong wind there were numerous enemy planes seen at 1000 meters approaching the German lines. Richthofen decided to go up alone on a solo flight to see if he could bring down an artillery spotter. An hour later MvR spotted a formation of artillery spotting aircraft flying slightly below 1000 meters. The Baron half hidden by clouds surprised one of the B.E.2f’s and attacked at 600 meters. In his combat report Richthofen wrote.” The adversary made the mistake of flying in a straight line when he tried to evade me and was just a wink to long in my fire (500 shots). The B.E.2f, serial no., A3154 was from the 16 squadron and flown by Flight Sergeant Sidney H. Quicke and his observer 2nd Lt. William J. Lidsey, had been on its second patrol of the day. After taking Richthofen’s fire, the plane seemed to lose control and began smoking in a spiral descent. The B.E. 2f was a complete loss and both of its occupants were mortally wounded. The pilot dead at the site of the crash and the observer would die of his wounds a few days later. It is still in debate what aircraft Richthofen flew on this mission. Various sources mention him flying a Halberstadt, an Albatros D.III and Le Petite Rouge. 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #B.E.2f #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #albatrosd.III

Baron von Richthofen's 27th Lt Arthur E. Boultbee and his observer, 2nd Class Air Mechanic Frederick King of the RFC, either died of gunshot wounds or trauma resulting from the air crash after Baron von Richthofen shot them down. The advantage on this day, March 17, went to the Baron and 9 of his Staffel in this dogfight. After firing over 800 rounds, the F.E 2b, No A5439 named Zanzibar, suffered structural damage and came apart. Both Boultbee and King died together on March 17, 1917, as they plummeted to the ground. There is no certainty to which Albatros D.lll Richthofen flew that day. It was either Le Petite Rouge or Nos. 2006/16 or else 1996/16 or even a Haberstadt D.ll. The Baron’s twenty-fifth victory came at midday on March 9, 1917. Roclincourt and Bailleul, Richthofen, and three other planes of his Jasta attacked several enemy aircraft. MvR singled out a British D.H.2 No. A2571 flown by Lt. Arthur J. Pearson of the 29th Squadron. After Richthofen fired a brief 100 rounds, Pearson’s planer soon caught fire and crashed and burned. The Baron could not obtain a war trophy as the plane was destroyed and too near the British lines. Lt. Arthur J. Pearson’s body was never found; his name is on the Memorial of the Missing in Arras, France. There is uncertainty regarding the plane that Richthofen was flying at the time of this victory. Le Petite Rouge may have been repaired by this time. It is also possible that he was still flying Albatros 1996/16, which was Lt. Edy Lubbert’s, who was still recovering from wounds. There is a possibility it could also have been Albatros 2006/16; we may never know. Richthofen’s 26th: Jasta 11 came upon a squadron of English BE.2d artillery spotters and FE’s of the 18th Squadron on March 11, 1917, between Loos and Vimy. “I had lost my squad, and was flying alone, and had been observing for some time an enemy artillery flyer…. I attacked the BE., and after 200 shots, the body of the machine broke in half. The plane fell smoking into our lines.” This description is what Richthofen wrote in his combat report describing his twenty-sixth victory over the B.E. 2D, No. 6232, piloted by 2LT James Symth and his observer 2LT Edward Burn. Both Symth and Burn perished in the action and either died of gunshot wounds, crash trauma, or immolation. In a letter sent to a friend before his death, Edward Burn commented he had a fear of being shot down and burning to death. 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #be.2d #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #theaviationart_official

Richthofen's Twenty-fourth Victory: On March 6, 1917, having survived being put down in the morning after his fuel tanks were holed by enemy fire, Richthofen was back in the air around 5 in the evening. Flying with Lt. Allmenroder, they attacked two enemy BE. 2e's on artillery spotting duty over Souchez. Richthofen’s attacked the B.E.2e, No A2785 manned by 2nd Lt. Gerald B. Gosset-Bibby, and his observer Lt. Geoffery J. O Brichta. Its wings came off, and it went straight down to the ground and crashed. Both men were killed in the crash and are buried alongside each other in Berlin Cemetery, France. The BE.2e completely new wings, braced by a single pair of interplane struts per side "single- and a set of shorter wingspan lower wing panels than previous BE versions. The tailplane was smaller than its predecessors and had a large quadrant vertical fin. It is still unclear what machine Richthofen had been flying due to the occurrence of the morning. The plane he was flying was an Albatros D.lll 1996/16. This aircraft was Lt. Edy Lubbert's, a fellow Jasta pilot who had been wounded, although this is also uncertain. 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #albatrosIII #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #be.2e #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #theaviationart_official

Number twenty-three and the second victory of the day for Richthofen came about 6 hours later, this time over Acheville. This time, the Baron reported that he stayed on the tail of a Sopwith ½ Strutter, for quite a while, firing 400 shots. The Strutter, No. A/1108 of the 43rd squadron of the RFC, lost a wing when trying to evade Richthofen and hurtled downward. The unfortunate victims were 2nd Lt. John H Herbert and 2nd Lt Alexander W. Reid, 19 and 20 years old respectively. Even though parts of the Strutter were strewn all over Acheville the fabric with the serial number stabilizer was taken as souvenirs for Richthofen as well as the downed plane’s guns. Whether MVR was flying an Albatros D.lll, his Le Petite Rogue, or a Halberstadt is not determined. 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #albatrosd.lll #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #sopwith1/2strutter #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #theaviationart_official #wwiaviationantiques

My 22nd out of all 80 Richthofen Victories With the weather being unfavorable for the rest of the month of February, it was not until March 4, 2017, that Richthofen struck again. North of Loos, Richthofen downed another British BE 2, No. 5785 on a fine March afternoon. His opponents this time were Lt. James B E Crosbee and Flight Sgt. J.E. Prance flying on a photo reconnaissance mission. Prance stated that, ‘he was attacked from right out of the sun’ by a very fast Halbastadt (Albatros). The German pilot fired a burst that hit Prance on the first go round. The second pass by the enemy shot away the extra ammo drums on the BE 2 and the third and final pass sent the British plane into slow ground headed spiral with holes in her fuel tank. After firing some 500 shots Richthofen for some reason did not pursue the stricken BE 2 and continue following but rather broke off the engagement. Crosbee was able to return to his base where Prance received medical aid. Again, was Richthofen’s claim seems to be made by mistake. As Richthofen acknowledge he did not see the plane crash and it seems his claim of downing the BE 2 was accepted. Also 500 shots were well above the capacity of a Halbastadt that carried a single gun. It does allow for the plane that Richthofen was flying in this engagement to be an was an Albatros which had a 1000-shot capacity. By this time the restrictions on flying the Albatros in combat had been rescinded. So even though it is on record that MvR flew Halbastadt’s for the month of march. The amount of ammo used in this victory says otherwise. 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #albatrosd.lll #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #be.2 #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #theaviationart_official #wwiaviationantiques

Baron von Richthofen in the morning… Manfred von to his compatriots. So much controversy, about his demise, in the air battles on the Western Front in WWI… hero or anti hero? An enigmatic figure, von Richthofen flew variants of Fokker Dr.I (Dreidecker, "triplane" in German). Known as the Red Baron by the Allies. A stalwart figure, military aeroplane enthusiasts have studied and possibly admired. #WesternFrontWWI #AirWar #EarlyAeroplane #EarlyAeroplaneDevelopment #FighterAircraft #Ace #GermanFighterPlanes #Fokker #FokkerDr.I #DreideckerinGerman #BaronVonRichthofen #RedBaron

Richthofen's 21st Six hours later, Valentine’s Day 1917, Richthofen and his Staffel encountered artillery spotters at a low altitude near lens. MvR pounced on the leader BE2c from the 2nd Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. “After the first 100 shots the observer stopped shooting. The plane began to smoke and twisted in an uncontrolled curve to the right. …. I shot at the falling plane until the left part of the wings came off.” So, it was written in von Richthofen’s combat report. He would go on to say he saw the plane touch down a heavy cloud of smoke in the snow where the plane lay. Yet, it did not land. The British pilot was Captain George Cyril Bailey, and his observer was @nd Lieutenant George William Betts Hampton. Bailey had been hit in the knee and put his plane in a spiral descent while Richthofen still firing pursued them. One of Richthofen’s rounds hit the Be2c’s gun mount, knocking the gun overboard but not before it struck Bailey who was in the rear cockpit. This falling gun is what MvR may have mistaken for part of the wing coming off and caused him to break off thinking Bailey and Hampton were goners. While no longer under fire Bailey successfully leveled off his badly shot up plane and headed safely for home. As Richthofen stated in his combat reports, “as it was foggy and already rather dark, I have no witnesses either from the air or from the ground.” 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #halberstadtd.II #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #be.2c #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #theaviationart_official #wwiaviationantiques

Number 20 out of 80 Richthofen Victories. What plane did Richthofen fly when he gained his twentieth victory? There is no documentation or evidence of him flying either the Halberstadt or an Albatros. All Albatros D.lll’s had been grounded due to structural issues until mid to late February. Due to the wing issues, they would not have been released until the integrity of the aircraft was satisfactory structurally and each plane was released for operations on a one-to-one basis. Depicted here MvR’s Halberstadtd.II The victim on Valentine’s Day, 2017, was a BE.2d serial no., 6231, flown by Cyril Douglas Bennet and his observer Herbert Arthur Croft. Richthofen spotted an enemy artillery spotter west of Loos at about 2000 meters. MvR closed to within 50 meters and after several hundred rounds the plane fell from the sky into the German trenches. Bennet had crash trauma, a banged-up hip and a skull fracture, the observer Croft was shot and killed in the air and buried by German troops. 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #halberstadtd.II #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #be.2d #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #theaviationart_official

Due to the structural wing issues with “Le Pettite Rouge”, Richthofen was flying a Halberstadt D.ll single seat fighter when he scored aerial victory number nineteen. On February 1, 1917, when Richthofen and his wing mate Lt. Allemenroeder, spotted BE.2d at about 4 PM. The Be.2d, serial No. 6742, acting as an artillery observer, was piloted by Lt. Percivil William Murray and his observer was Lt. Duncan John McRae flying at about 1800 meters. Richthofen managed to get within 50 yards of the Be.2 before he was even seen by the enemy. It would prove too little too late for after firing only one hundred and fifty shots at only a plane length away, the British plane went down in uncontrolled curves crashing into the barbed wire of the German front lines southwest of Thelus. BothMcRae and Murray were wounded and captured by German Infantry, and both died shortly thereafter and are buried alongside each other in the Bois-Carre British Cemetery. Murray was only 20 years old while McRae was 4 years older. Until the structural issues were corrected on his Albatros D.lll, Richthofen would continue to fly the Halberstadt for a continued length of time. For how long MvR flew this plan is up for debate among historians. 20” x 16” oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #halberstadtd.II #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #be.2d #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation #theaviationart_official

#twofortuesday There are surprisingly few cards with Snoopy vs the Red Baron theme. This one is from France🇫🇷 . After all these years, I still enjoy taking my cards to the floor. The better to share the hobby with Betty. 🤦🏼‍♂️😆😽🥰 Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen (2 May 1892 – 21 April 1918), known in English as Baron von Richthofen or the Red Baron, was a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories. Originally a cavalryman, Richthofen transferred to the Air Service in 1915, becoming one of the first members of fighter squadron Jagdstaffel 2 in 1916. He quickly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot, and during 1917 became the leader of Jasta 11. Later he led the larger fighter wing Jagdgeschwader I, better known as "The Flying Circus" or "Richthofen's Circus" because of the bright colours of its aircraft, and perhaps also because of the way the unit was transferred from one area of Allied air activity to another – moving like a traveling circus, and frequently setting up in tents on improvised airfields. By 1918, Richthofen was regarded as a national hero in Germany, and respected by his enemies. Richthofen was shot down and killed near Vaux-sur-Somme on 21 April 1918. There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains one of the most widely known fighter pilots of all time, and has been the subject of many books, films, and other media. The Red Baron serves as the main antagonist for Snoopy's battles as the World War I Flying Ace. Snoopy's imaginary battles against the Red Baron began in the comic strip in October 1965 and would continue in it for several decades. Snoopy's make-believe encounters with the Red Baron would also be seen on television and inspire a novelty record by The Royal Guardsmen. He is also the main antagonist of Snoopy's subplot in The Peanuts Movie. #baronvonrichthofen #redbaron #aceofaces #snoopy #peanutscomics #sopwithcamel #skybirds #nationalchicleskybirds #prewarcards #prewarnonsportscards #vintagebaseballcards

On this day in 1918, German fighter ace Baron Manfred von Richthofen "The Red Baron", was shot down and killed over Vaux sur Somme in France. Canadian pilot Arthur Roy Brown was credited with the kill but the mystery remains about whether he actually did it or not — later investigations have shown he may not actually have been the one who performed the deed. There are at least three other credible possibilities of who it could have been. Richthofen is considered the top fighter ace of the war. He was widely respected by his enemies and regarded as a national hero in Germany by 1918. History has recorded "The Red Baron" as one of the top fighter pilots of all time and thus he has become the subject of various books, songs and films. Throughout his career, he has been credited with more than 80 kills. #history #historic #historical #otd #onthisday #historyinpictures #historicalpictures #historicalpics #momentsintime #famoushistoricalfigures #wwi #worldwari #redbaron #theredbaron #baronvonrichthofen #baronmanfredvonrichthofen #fighterace #arthurroybrown #wwievents #famousevents #mysteryofhistory

April 21, 1918: Manfred von Richthofen, the German air corps' infamous Red Baron, is shot down over Vaux sur Somme in northern France. Looking to add to his 80 kills, Richthofen ventured too deep into enemy territory ("don't get cocky!") making him an easy, outnumbered target. Many soldiers took credit for downing the German ace (bullshit flies, too!), leaving the true facts of his demise hazy at best. Richthofen's final moments are so muddled that it's perfectly acceptable to believe that Snoopy finally got his man. Why the hell not. Richthofen's body was returned to Germany and buried with full military honors. He was 25 years old. #theredbaron #baronvonrichthofen #snoopy #history #militaryhistory #worldwarone #planes #pilots #flyingace

Manfred von Richthofen’s 18th Victory. Richthofen flying a little after high noon West of Vimy attacked the commanding aircraft of an enemy formation. The FE. 2b no 6997 was piloted by Captain Oscar Greig who was with his observer Lieutenant John Eric MacLennan. MacLennan in a statement after the war indicated that they were jumped by Richthofen from behind. The Albatros with the red painted fuselage continued its pursuit, wounding the FE.2B pilot in the ankle and shooting up the engine, causing it to sputter and stop. The pilot was left with no choice but to try to land. MvR followed his enemy down. While the British plane made a safe landing and proceeded to burn their plane, Richthofen also landed due to a cracked wing on his Albatros. Richthofen originally stated that he landed due to an engine problem. More than likely it was stated as such to disguise a structure failure in the new model Albatros D.lll. While the British plane was on fire, Richthofen took the serial number off the tail of the British plane as a souvenir. The two British airmen explained their shock at being attacked but also remarked to Richthofen that his," red painted plane is not unknown to them, as when being asked who had brought them down, they answered: Le petite rouge.” 20" X16" oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #albatrosd.III #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #FE.2b #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation

This is "The Red Baron". The Red Baron Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen, also known as Baron von Richthofen, was a German World War I pilot who also became known as the Ace of Aces. With 80 confirmed kills to his credit, The Red Baron was the most respected air combat pilot of the war and became a national hero in Germany and was highly respected by his enemies. At the young age of 25 on the 21st of April during an air battle near Morlancout, France, Richthofen was hit in the chest by a single bullet fired by and credited to Canadian pilot Captain Roy Brown, although there are many who believe this bullet was fired from the ground by anti-aircraft machine guns. The Red Baron apparently died while still flying his red Albotros D. III triplane (not the Fokker Dr. I as is commonly thought). The plane stalled and went into a steep dive hitting the groundnear the village of Vaux-sur-Somme. Within minutes several witnesses reached the aircraft to find Richthofen dead in the cockpit. The original of this amazing painting of Richthofen, The Red Baron, is a 25 x 31 oil on canvas depicting Richthofen standing in a field near the famous red triplane. What do you think? As part of the Royal Naval Air Services, 8th Squadron, Todd was flying a Sopwith Pup, No. 5193 on January 4, 1917. Todd and his Squadron were sent to the Somme Front to counter the aggressive activity of the German Albatros aircraft. The British pilots attacked aggressively when Richthofen’s Jasta arrived on the scene. So much so that Todd \pilot \out the Red Baron and began his attack. Unfortunately, as Richthofen puts it,” the enemy plane was superior to ours. Only because we were three against one, we detected the enemy’s week points. I managed to get behind him and shoot him down.” Todd’s plane fell apart while falling through the sky, landing in the vicinity of Metz-en-Couture. Cause of death was either from gunshot wounds or crash trauma. Some valuables of Todd were collected by the Germans and returned. Over time his gravesite became lost due to the turmoil of war. Todd’s name is on the Arras Memorial to the Missing. Two days after shooting down Todd, Richthofen received a telegram from the Kaiser. It read simply: ‘His Majesty, the Kaiser, has awarded the Orden Pur le Merite to Leutnant von Richthofen’. The Orden Pur le Merite could be awarded to any military officer regardless of his branch of service, however its most famous recipients were German Pilots during the Great War. The medal was to be worn whenever the recipient was in uniform. Informally known as the Blue Max, it was supposedly given that name in honor of the German ace Max Immelman, who awarded the medal on the same day in 1916 as Otto Boelcke, Richthofen’s mentor. Originally given for 8 Aerial Victories the number was later raised to 16 in early 2017.It was awarded to Richthofen on January 12, 1917. It was Prussia’s highest Military award, and it was awarded to MvR for the successful confirmation of shooting down 16 enemy planes. Richthofen received credit for downing the DH.2n No, 5985 as his 15th victim. This victory was collaborated by artillery men on the ground. According to Richthofen in a head-on firing pass he went head-to-head with the British plane. The DH.2 flown by James Thomas Byford McCudden did not crash behind British lines, as Richthofen noted in the day's Combat Report. McCudden observed the German Squadron and attacked. The German combat version states that the enemy was pushed back. The British combat version is very different. McCudden notes, “I fired around 15 shots and drove him (MvR) off. He turned and came towards me, firing. I opened fire at 100 yards and after about 8 shots my gun stopped due to cross feed. As the hostile machine was engaging me at close range. I turned on my back and dived vertically in a slow spin and in this way regained our lines.” McCudden cleared his jammed guns and renewed the chase but due to the Barons superior aircraft the British pilot was already outdistanced. Richthofen under the assumption that McCudden had crashed, renewed his squadron, by rejoining his patrol that then withdrew. Richthofen learned from his mentor Oswald Boelke not to pursue an enemy too low over unfriendly lines. Ground fire and antiaircraft fire were not the airman’s friends. A heavy presence of British AA batteries gave MvR the reason to leave the area and resume his Staffel; having seen McCudden dive, Richthofen could only assume he had shot the British pilot down. Sergeant McCudden who would live to fight another day survived aerial combat and achieved 57 aerial victories. He was decorated with the Victoria Cross, the DSO and Bar, the MC and Bar and was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French. In the last summer of the war McCudden died in a flying accident when his plane had an engine stoppage and he side slipped into the ground. He was 21 years old. The 14th in my series of 80 Richthofen Victories. It was fine flying weather on Wednesday December 20, 1916, when Richthofen and 4 planes of his Staffel encountered an English squadron. of encountered. At a quarter to 2 in the afternoon over Moreuil, MvR zeroed in and attacked the last plane. According to Richthofen’s combat report the British plane was an FE.2b No., A5446 piloted by a Lt Darcy and the observer was unknown due to the lack of an identification disc. At three thousand meters Richthofen began his attack and after his first pass the motor of the FE2b began to smoke and the observer was wounded. “The plane went down in large curves. I followed and fired at the closest range. I had also killed, as was ascertained later on the pilot. Finally, the plane crashed on the ground.” The pilot of the ill-fated FE. 2b was Lieutenant Lionel George D’Arcy, who had only been with the squadron for a little over two weeks. His plane was a gift of the Matalan People and it had written in block letters Malaya No.11 on its nacelle. D’Arcy’s unknown observer was identified as Sub-Lieutenant Reginald Cuthbert Whiteside, a volunteer reserve of the Nelson Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Neither graves nor the bodies of D’Arcy or Whiteside were ever found, and both are commemorated on the Memorial to the Missing in Arras, France. 20" x16" Oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #albatrosd.III #baronvonrichthofen #theredbaron #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #FE.2b #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviation

My 13th in my series depicting all 80 Manfred Von Richthofen victories. Like all Richthofen aerial victories, there was a beginning, a middle, and an end to number thirteen. While flying on or about 300 meters on December 20, 1916, MvR along with four fellow Germans attacked a DH2 squadron. Over Menchy, at about 11:30am, Richthofen singled out an adversary and pressed his attack. This unlucky victim was Captain Arthur Gerald Knight flying DH2 No. 7927, who at 21 years of age was a baby-faced experienced aviator with eight victories and a DSO (Distinguished Service Order awarded for meritorious service and MC, (the Military Cross for an act or acts of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy), already to his credit. Richthofen after some curve fighting managed to press Hunt down to 1500 meters and keep on him until 1200 meters from the ground. When Richthofen fired his last shots, he was only a plane's length behind Knight. Finally British observers on the ground witnessed Knight’s plane corkscrewing in a dive east of Adinfer Wood, near Monchy-au-Bois. This was the actual location of the encounter and not Menchy. These mistakes in translation from German into English were common in respect to accuracy in bookkeeping, the fog of war or just plain clerical or translation errors. Even though Knight became Richthofen’s thirteenth victim, he was the only plane shot down that day, despite a good deal of the British squadron having been shot up. Richthofen more than likely was flying a dark colored maybe earth toned Albatros D.ll, it could have been Number 491/16 or 481/16 due to lack of corresponding notation or record keeping. What is known is that Capt. Knight’s craft was painted an olive drab tone with a light under wing color painted either nacelle fabric or white. Knight’s body was never returned to England, but lies in the Douchy-les-Ayette British Cemetery in France. Tenth in my series of all 80 Richthofen victories. On November 20 at around 4:15, Richthofen scored his tenth. “Together with 4 planes I attacked a Vickers two-seater type above the clouds at 2500 meters alt. After 300 shots the adversary broke through clouds pursued by me, Near Grandcourt I shot him down.”7 The second plane MvR shot down that day was a FE.2b, No. 4848, piloted by @nd Lt. Gilbert Sudbury Hall and his Observer, 2nd Lt George Dougherty. Both men either died of wounds or crash trauma. Numerous times Richthofen and other pilots made mistakes in naming the aircraft they either encountered or killed due to the rigors of aerial combat and the fog of war. Number 8 in my series of depicting all 80 of Richthofen's victories. Richthofen’s combat report stated that the weather was bright and clear on November 9, 1916, when he claimed his 8th victory. Over Beugny, his Staffel encountered an enemy bombing squadron at 10:30 in the morning. Flying an Albatros D.II 491/16, he singled out a BE.2c, No.2506 at 2500 meters. The British plane was flying without an observer in lieu of bombs. “Just short of the target I caught up with the last of the opponents” Richthofen wrote, also stating he burned him around the edges a bit. The BE.2c pilot 2nd Lt John Ian Gilmour Cameron, tried to land with his bombs. His speed in doing so in any case he decided to land with his bombs. The speed with which the wounded Cameron flew to reach the ground increased greatly, causing him to either crash or make a hard landing at Beugny. Cameron died of wounds in enemy hands 2 days later. 20"x 16" oil on panel. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #albatrosd.II #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #be.2c #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviationart #airplane #planes #warbird #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

The fifth image in my Richthofen series, Victory #5. Above Betincourt on Monday, October 16, along with 4 other planes flying at 2800 meters Richthofen claimed his fifth victim. After firing 350 shots the BE.12, No 6580, piloted by 2nd Lt. John Thompson “crashed to the ground smashed” near Yrtes. Lt. Thompson was killed either by gunshot wounds or crash trauma. For some time MvR’s fifth victim was originally thought to be Lt. E.W. Capper. It had been thought that Thompson borrowed some flying gear of Capper’s that was marked with the latter’s name. Leading Richthofen to misidentify the pilot. As souvenir Richthofen had the serial number 6580 cut from the plane’s stabilizer where it hung on the wall in Richthofen’s quarters in the Roucourt chateau, France. The seventh in my series of all 80 Richthofen Victories. November 3, 1916 was a misty day with clear intervals of blue sky in the afternoon. At 2:10 PM Lieutenant Richthofen was flying as a member of Jagdsraffel 2 encountered a two-seater Vickers aircraft, No. 7010.This Fe2b piloted by Sgt, Cuthbert Godfrey Baldwin while 2nd Lieutenant George Andrew Bentham manned the gun and acted as observer when it came under attack by Richthofen over Gommecourt. Richthofen and another German aircraft attacked the British plane that was flying at 1800 meters. After 400 shots the FE.2b In Richthofen’s words, the enemy,” dashed to the ground and smashed to pieces “, Northeast of Grevilles Wood. Both British airmen were KIA either from wounds or from crash trauma. There is a good possibility MvR was flying an Albatros D.ll. 20"x 16" oil on panel. www.tomlapadula_aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #be.12 #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviationart #airplane #planes #warbird #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

The sixth in my series depicting all 80 Richthofen victories. Richthofen’s victory number 6 also has some discrepancies between after action reports and Richthofen’s own narrative. There are differences in time between Jasta 2’s report and Richthofen’s statement. Also, conflicting reports of what type of plane Richthofen shot down. The KOFL weekly report and MvR designates the victim as a British BE.12, While the R.F.C. combat report describes the plane as a BE. 12 serial number 6629. Richthofen while over the trenches fired 200 shots at L. James Fischer seriously wounded him in the lower abdomen. Fischer went down in large right hand curves and eventually crashed. My 21st sketch of all 80 Richthofen victories. Six hours later on Valentine's day 2017, Richthofen and his Staffel encountered artillery spotters at a low altitude near lens. MvR pounced on the leader BE2c from the 2nd Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. “After the first 100 shots the observer stopped shooting. The plane began to smoke and twisted in an uncontrolled curve to the right. …. I shot at the falling plane until the left part of the wings came off.”14 So, it was written in von Richthofen’s combat report. He would go on to say he saw the plane touch down a heavy cloud of smoke in the snow where the plane lay. Yet, it did not land. The British pilot was Captain George Cyril Bailey, and his observer was 2nd Lieutenant George William Betts Hampton. As Richthofen stated in his combat reports, “as it was foggy and already rather dark, I have no witnesses either from the air or from the ground.” In all fairness MvR’s victory claim should have been disallowed. Could it be that an allowance was made because the claim was Richthofen’s? www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #halberstadt #albatros #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart #be.2c #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviationart #airplane #planes #warbird #carrierplanes #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

The 20th out of 80 sketches depicting all Richthofen victories. The plane that Richthofen flew when he gained his twentieth victory. There is no documentation or evidence of him flying either the Halberstadt or an Albatros. All Albatros D.lll had been grounded due to structural issues until mid to late February. Due to the wing issues, they would not have been released until the integrity of the aircraft was satisfactory structurally and each plane was released for operations on a one-to-one basis. The victim on Valentine’s Day, 2017, was a BE.2d serial no., 6231, flown by Cyril Douglas Bennet and his observer Herbert Arthur Croft. Richthofen spotted an enemy artillery spotter west of Loos at about 2000 meters. MvR closed to withing 50 meters and after several hundred rounds the plane fell from the sky into the German trenches. Bennet had crash trauma, a banged-up hip and a skull fracture, the observer Croft was shot and killed in the air and buried by German troops. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #halberstadt #albatros #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviationart #airplane #planes #warbird #carrierplanes #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

The 19th out of 80 sketches depicting all Richthofen victories. Due to the structural wing issues with “Le Pettite Rouge”, Richthofen was flying a Halberstadt D.ll single seat fighter when he scored aerial victory number 19. It was a fine afternoon on February 1, 1917, when Richthofen and his wing mate Lt. Until the structural issues were corrected on his Albatros D.lll, Richthofen would continue to fly the Halberstadt for a continued length of time. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #halberstadt #albatros #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviationart #airplane #planes #warbird #carrierplanes #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

The 18th sketch in my series to paint all 80 of Richthofen's victories. In speaking to the British airmen, who were the first, the first Richthofen had brought down and met. The two British airmen explained their shock at being attacked but also remarked to Richthofen that his," red painted plane is not unknown to them, as when being asked who had brought them down, they answered: Le Petite Rouge.” www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com @real.tom_lapadula_aviation_art #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #albatrosd.lll #Fe.2b #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart #biplane #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #paintings #artwork #aviationart #Airplane #planes #warbird #carrierplanes #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

Prussian Officer Cap of Manfred Albrecht Freiherr von Richthofen – The Red Baron – a fighter pilot with the German Air Force during World War I. He is considered the ace-of-aces of the war, being officially credited with 80 air combat victories. Richthofen was shot down and killed near Vaux-sur-Somme on 21st April 1918. There has been considerable discussion and debate regarding aspects of his career, especially the circumstances of his death. He remains one of the most widely known fighter pilots of all time, and has been the subject of many books, films, and other media. #hats #hatguide #hat #headwear #headgear #hatmaking #hatmaker #hathistory #cap #caps #redbaron #baronvonrichthofen #prussianofficercap #prussianarmyapparel #fighterace #worldwar1 #ww1 #fighterpilot #vauxsursomme #flyingace #1918 #snoopy #pilotcap #france #westernfront #fokkertriplane

The Duke of Cumberland is given the freedom of the city. 1836 - The Mexican army of General Antonio López de Santa Anna is defeated by a Texian army at the battle of San Jacinto. The Texian army's numbers began to swell with new of the defeat at the Alamo. General Houston withdrew his army, not wishing to engage the Mexicans with a ill trained, undisciplined army. Santa Anna followed with a smaller force and set up camp in a vulnerable location at San Jacinto. Through the night Santa Anna's army was reinforced and now numbered about 1,400 men. At 4.30pm the Texians advanced from their camp. After a single volley they broke their lines and swarmed the Mexican camp. Although the battle was over in less than 30 minutes the killings continued for hours and fleeing Mexican soldiers were cut down. The following day Santa Anna was captured and soona treaty was signed recognizing the Republic of Texas with the border at the Rio Grande. 1838 - John Muir, naturalist, botanist, mountaineer, is born in Dunbar, Scotland. The 17th sketch in a series of all 80 Red Baron Victories. A short while after becoming Germany’s leading air ace and receiving the Por le Merite, the title of “Red Baron'' was born. The arrival of the new Albatros D.lll’s to the front and MvR’s transfer to Jasta 11 cemented a Richthofen Squadron of aeroplanes. There is a lot of legend and suggestion on the name Le Petit Rouge, Richthofen wrote,” It occurred to me to have my packing case painted all over in a staring red. The result was that everyone got to know my red bird. My opponents also seemed to have heard of the colour transformation.`` 13 There is really no absolute reason why Richthofen began to fly a red plane. One theory is that it asserted him as “a leader” in the air, due him becoming Staffelfurhrer of Jasta 11 which at that time was not a crack unit. A lot or supposed reasons and antidotes that could all be construed as true or false. Supposedly all RAF units were aware of Le Petit Rouge, then again Richthofen could not be everywhere, and undoubtedly a red plane would have been unforgettable, even though according to Richthofen the British were the ones that gave the red plane its name. The reason why the plane was red till this day is speculative and has grown increasingly more romantic as the years pass on. A little after 4pm on January 23, 2017, Richthofen had an encounter with an FE.8, No.6388, a pusher type biplane. When the British pilot Hay noticed Richthofen he bolted but not before MvR got off about 150 rounds into the FE.8., the plane then ignited, and began burning as it fell from the sky. At 500 feet Lt. Hay the pilot was observed either jumping or falling from the plane. R Lt Hays body was recovered by Canadian troops southeast of the village of Aix Noulette. www.tomlapadula_aviationart.com @real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #albatrosdll #fe.8 #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart

Number 16/80 of Red Baron Victory sketches. The First Canadian pilot to fall under the guns of the Red Baron was Flight Lieutenant Allan Switzer Todd. So much so, that Todd \pilot \out the Red Baron and began his attack. Unfortunately, as Richthofen puts it,” the enemy plane was superior to ours. Only because we were three against one, we detected the enemy’s week points. I managed to get behind him and shoot him down.”12 Todd’s plane fell apart while falling through the sky, landing in the vicinity of Metz-en-Couture. Cause of death was either from gunshot wounds or crash trauma. Some valuables of Todd were collected by the Germans and returned. Over time his grave site became lost due to the turmoil of war. It was Prussia’s highest Military award, and it was awarded to MvR for the successful confirmation of shooting down 16 enemy planes. www.tomlapadula_aviationart.com @real_tom.lapadula_aviation_art #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #albatrosdll #sopwithpup #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart

The second sketch in my series depicting of all 80 Richthofen aerial victories. Manfred von Richthofen, encountered Sgt. Herbert Bellerby and his squadron flying Martinsyde's G100's over Bapaume, France on September 23,1916. Richthofen fired over 300 rounds causing Sgt. Bellerby to make a hard landing, which overturned his plane. Bellerby died of wounds. He went down near Beugny and was buried in a grave that was lost during the turmoil of war. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com tom_lapadula_aviation_art #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #albatrosdll #dh .2 #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart #bi #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #Paintings #Artwork #Aviationart #Airplane #Planes #warbird #carrierplanes #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

I decided to paint all 80 of Baron Von Richthofen’s aerial victories. Here is the concept sketch for victory #1, on Sept 17, 1916, near Flesquieres France. While engaged in aerial combat his opponents propeller stuck and crashed landed. Richthofen was credited with the victory. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com tom_lapadula_aviation_art #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #albatrosdll #dh .2 #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart #bi #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #Paintings #Artwork #Aviationart #Airplane #Planes #warbird #carrierplanes #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

My fifteenth sketch depicting all 800 Richthofen victories. Richthofen received credit for downing the DH.2n No, 5985 as his 15th victim. This victory was collaborated by artillery men on the ground. According to Richthofen in a head-on firing pass he went head-to-head with the British plane. The DH.@ flown by James Thomas Byford McCudden did not crash behind British lines, as Richthofen noted in the days Combat Report. Richthofen under the assumption that McCudden had crashed, renewed his squadron, by rejoining his patrol that then withdrew. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com tom_lapadula_aviation_art #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #albatrosdll #dh .2 #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart #bi #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #Paintings #Artwork #Aviationart #Airplane #Planes #warbird #carrierplanes #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

The fourteenth sketch in my series depicting of all 80 Richthofen aerial victories. It was fine flying weather on Wednesday, December 20, 1916, when Richthofen and 4 planes of his Staffel encountered an English squadron. of encountered. I had also killed, as was ascertained later the pilot. Finally, the plane crashed on the ground.”10 The pilot if the ill-fated FE. Richthofen’s plane was either an Albatros D.ll 481/16 or the Albatros D.ll 501/16 which he occasionally flew according to German researcher Reinhard Kastner. He occasionally flew other planes, including a few remaining D.l’s as well as his personal aircraft. Photographs of this model show a factory yellow straw finish with camouflage on the wings. www.tomlapadula-aviationart.com @tom_lapadula_aviation_art #richthofen #baronvonrichthofen #manfredvonrichthofen #albatrosdll #dh .2 #wwl #militaryaviation #aviationart #bi #theaviationart #theaviationartofficial #Paintings #Artwork #Aviationart #Airplane #Planes #warbird #carrierplanes #militaryhistory #fighteraircraft

Fertig! Fear the Rote Kampffliege 🟥➕️ This was a super challenging build for me. Firstly it's my first bi(tri)plane which require planning for rigging and control wires. Secondly this plastic was some of the softest, most delicate I've had to handle. Many times I broke off the tail fin 😅 What do you all think? I'm pretty happy with the propeller wood effect 🪵 Also thanks to everyone who watched my stream!
