🚨Link in bio🚨 Following the battle of Kolb’s Farm on June 22nd, 1864, General William T. Sherman thought the Confederate lines at Kennesaw would be spread to thin to withstand a frontal assault. The assault at Pigeon Hill was one of two attempts to break the Confederate defenses along the Kennesaw line on June 27th, 1864. While there were not as many casualties here as there were at Cheatham Hill (dead angle), the assault was still especially difficult. This was largely due to the steep, rocky terrain and a strong line of defenses constructed by the Confederate forces. There was charge and counter-charge. The ground was won and lost, and won again. The colors were subsequently captured and again recaptured. Both sides had now fought to a frazzle, and were thoroughly exhausted. Both had displayed with a few exceptions the most determined courage and obstinacy. No more desperate fighting was ever done over such a length of time. The ground was covered with the slain, and in some places the woods had taken fire, and the ground was hot to stand on. The Federal artillery after the Confederates got in position was badly smashed. The battery at the right of the Chancellor house had lost all its officers and cannoneers and horses, and had to be moved by hand by details from the infantry. The Battle of Kolb’s Farm taking place on June 22, 1864 saw the famed Confederate General John Bell Hood launch a frontal assault against an entrenched union force under the command of Major General John Schofield. Hood believed that he had an opportunity to outflank the Union force and defeat the Union forces in front of his corps. However, Union artillery and a strong defensive line repelled this attack with ease and inflicted heavy losses on Hood’s men. South Mountain and Antietam were the first fields of battle I was ever on after the battle was fought. On the Peninsula we fought the battles and then fell back, leaving the enemy in possession of the field, the dead and wounded. It is a sad sight. I hope I may never behold the like again. The dead remained two days untouched. There lay friend and foe locked in the cold embrace of death, unconscious of all that was passing around them finally; as it were to find their last resting place in a strange country where no kind friend may drop a tear to their remembrance. Thus it is that a sad calamity has befallen us. It has left many a void in a once happy household, a vacancy around the hearthstone that the world cannot fill. How long must our country suffer? The excitement of the battle had affected us all to a great extent... At the same time I cannot say that I felt any very intense desire to get up and rush forward to be an active participant. Not so with William Lambert, one of our Company K members. He had become more interested and excited than the rest of us. Suddenly jumping to his feet, and waving his gun high over his head, he yelled out, in a voice that could be plainly heard even in that tremendous din : “Come on, boys! Come on! They’re running! The cowardly are running! Come on! If you’re not all cowards, come on!” And with that Lambert rushed ahead and was soon in the ranks of one of the regiments ahead of us. In less than two minutes Lambert came back! This time he did not have his rifle with him. On the contrary he was carrying something else in one of his hands! It was the broken remnant of one of his arms! It had been struck by something and literally torn to shreds. A strip of skin and the cloth of his coat sleeve prevented its falling off altogether, but what there was left of it was being carried in the other hand. That was the last of brave William Lambert’s fighting. He went to the rear, had his arm amputated, went to the hospital, and was discharged when he got well. Joseph E. Why I, and the other fellows came to enlist, is something I never could explain. I think I am safe in saying that, at the moment, genuine patriotism hardly entered into the question. Of course there were some who enlisted from patriotic motives; but when one comes down to the bottom facts, I believe a majority of the boys were induced to go from other motives. Most probably it was the general excitement of the times. It was simply a furore to go to the war. To many it was a change from the ordinary humdrum of life. To others it was looked upon as a picnic. As the range grew better, the firing became more rapid, the situation desperate and exasperating to the last degree. Human nature was on the race, and there burst forth from it the most vehement, terrible swearing I have ever heard. Certainly the joy of conflict was not ours that day. The suspense was only for a moment, however, for the order to charge came just after. Whether the regiment was thrown into disorder or not, I never knew. I only remember that as we rose, and started all the fire that had been held back so long was loosed. In a second the air was full of the hiss of bullets and the hurtle of grape-shot. The mental strain was so great that I saw at the moment the singular effect mentioned, I think, in the life of Goethe on a similar occasion - - the whole landscape for an instant turned slight red. Discover the fascinating world of stereo cards! These cardboard cards with side-by-side photographs, can be viewed through a set of lenses known as a stereoscope, resulting in a three-dimensional illusion. Very few photos of the battlefields were seen during the first half of the 20th century due to access challenges, prohibitions, and censorship policies, therefore these stereoscope cards would have played a vital part in recording and depicting the realities of the battles. The stereograph cards depict the carnage and turmoil faced by soldiers on the front lines and were used up until the 1930's. The company that made these had a variety of series produced for different conflict such as, ‘The Japanese Russian War Through the Stereoscope’ and ‘Portugal Through the Stereoscope’. As we are days away from Abraham Lincoln's birthday, today's "Friday Series" is a collection of my photographs of Gettysburg National Military Park, in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Over the past five years, I have made five trips to photograph the battlefield, the monuments, and the cemetery. Most recently, I photographed these locations in snow, about three weeks ago. At the dedication to the cemetery for fallen union soldiers, in his "Gettysburg Address," Lincoln urged the country to "take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion-that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain-that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom-and that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth." On Sunday, I Drove out to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania to capture some winter photographs of the Gettysburg National Military Park (the site of the Battle of Gettysburg). I took this photograph about 20 minutes after sunset, and the sky over the horizon was a beautiful combination of yellows and oranges. This is the section of the battlefield known as "The Angle," at Cemetery Ridge (on Hancock Avenue). It is where Union (United States) troops repelled the Confederate's "Picket's Charge" on the 3rd and final day of the battle. This is the farthest north that the rebels advanced in he entire Civil War. During the fight when the bullets fell like hail, I thought of you as far away, at a church, on your knees, praying for my safety, and I was nerved and strengthened to do my duty. It seems a miracle that I was not killed as several of my men were shot down at my side. I attribute all to the providence of God, and I trust that I will endeavor to appreciate his mercy. I went over the field yesterday. The scene was awful. The dead Yankees were still lying unburied in many places. I saw as many as one hundred in the space of an acre. They belong to Ellsworth’s Zouaves who were reduced from 1,100 to 200 men. God seems specially to have marked them for vengeance. They wore blue pants and red shirts and are fierce looking fellows. As we advanced, solid shot and shell greeted us, and when we got nearer, grape accompaniment was added. There must have been fifty guns at play in front and flank. The biggest tree afforded no protection. One might as well have been in front as behind it. Limbs and the tops were falling about us as if torn by a cyclone. Then from the rear shells came shrieking over our heads from Carter’s battalion of artillery. We were enveloped, as it were, in a dense fog, the flashing of guns could be seen only a few feet away. As soon as our battery commences to fire, a perfect storm of shot passes over us. It seems as if the enemy had just found out where we are. A caisson standing near us is blown up and startles us so that good many spring for their feet, but Major Grigsby of the 27th Regr. draws his sword and orders all to lie down. We lie here a long while flat on our faces in the broiling hot sun, the firing seeming to approach rather than recede. Many men were killed and wounded while we are here. The wounded cry out... every moment, and are borne to the rear by their friends. Some are killed so instantly that those who were nearest to them would not know it. We begin to think that a battle is not so nice as some had imagined. We have plenty of time to think, and the constant scream of the shell & the occasional whistle of a bullet impress upon us the danger of our situation. At last guns in front of us are moved back. The fire of the enemy’s batteries slackens; but the musketry increases in volume. At this moment we are ordered to rise and though we feel that our part is not done; still it is a relief to stand up. As we rise we leave many bodies of our comrades lying, as if asleep, and so hard is it to realize that they are no longer of us that we fell like calling on them to take their places in ranks. #BattlefieldSpotlight: Fort McHenry The failed bombardment of Fort McHenry on September 13, 1814, forced the British to abandon their land assault on the crucial port city of Baltimore. This British defeat was a turning point in the War of 1812, leading both sides to reach a peace agreement later that year. The birthplace of the Star-Spangled Banner, Fort McHenry, still stands as it did when "the rockets' red glare, the bombs bursting in air, gave proof through the night that our flag was still there." Beautifully preserved, the fort is now protected by the National Park Service as the Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of fortifications, buildings, and artillery ranging from the War of 1812 to World War One. Little is known about Captain Daniel Neil other than his Revolutionary War service. Neil enlisted in the Eastern Company of the New Jersey Artillery on February 18, 1776, with the rank of Captain Lieutenant (first lieutenant). He was promoted to Captain on May 9 of the same year. Neil and his company were active in New Jersey throughout 1776 and crossed the Delaware with Washington on December 26. #OnThisDay January 3, 1777, as the Continental Army approached Princeton, Neil and his company were assigned to General Hugh Mercer’s brigade. When Mercer was detached by General Nathanael Greene to engage the British, Neil and his two cannons advanced in support. Mercer ran headlong into elements of the 17th Regiment of Foot, and a pitched battle erupted. Neil’s battery began throwing round shot at the approaching British lines as quickly as they could load and fire. However, Mercer’s men could not withstand the onslaught and began to waver. When Mercer attempted to rally his men, his horse was shot from under him, and he was bayonetted and left for dead. His second in command, Colonel John Haslet, attempted to restore order, but was killed instantly, leaving the Continentals leaderless. Neil ordered one cannon to withdraw with the infantry, staying behind to help cover the retreat with his second gun. Neil was unable to withdraw the second cannon and was killed while he worked his gun. His sacrifice helped cover the withdrawal of the remainder of Mercer’s men. Captain Neil’s final resting place is unknown, and it is possible that he lies buried in the mass grave located on Princeton Battlefield. The roar of musketry was incessant and the booming of cannon almost without intermission. Occasionally the shouts of men could be heard above the awful din, indicating a charge or some advantage gained by one side or the other. Horses without riders were rushing across the field. The sight which presented itself to our eyes as we came through the woods to our designated position was enough to make the heart of the bravest man falter. Limbs and twigs of trees were falling struck by a storm of iron hail; the very air was laden with these flying missiles of death and it seemed impossible to be in that hell of shot and shell and survive. The boys were singing: “I am going home, to die no more,” and in less than thirty minutes half of our number had gone “home.” Even before we could get into position our horses and men went down like grass before the scythe. General Hancock sent Lieutenant Kirby, of the First U.S. Battery, to take charge of us. He had just reached my gun, when a shell exploded, shattering his hip and breaking his horse’s leg. I asked whether I should take him from the field. Lieutenant Kirby answered: “No, not along as a gun can be fired.” He was lying on the ground near the gun, bleeding from his wound, and liable to be hit again at any moment. At last a rebel shell struck our piece, exploding in the muzzle, and battering it so that we could not get another charge into it. I stepped to the rear of the gun, and reported to Lieutenant Kirby that our last gun was disabled and only two of us left. I also asked him if I could take him off the field. He replied: “No, not until the guns are taken off.” What a display of courage in that young officer, lying there with his life’s blood slowly ebbing away and putting duty before life. When I first went in, the first thing that I saw was a shell come over my head and went about 6 rods beyond me and hit the ground and bursted and tore one boy’s leg off close to his body and tore one side off his head. He was the worst looking sight that anybody ever saw. I stepped over a good many dead bodies, some with their brains shot out and some with their legs shot off and such cries you never heard. Some of our boys hollering, “Go in boys and kill the sons of bitches!” Horses was killed—lots of them. We saw one man with his horse. He was riding him and there come a shell and cut him in two and the horse ran away with his hind quarters on his back riding him as though he was alive and that looked hard. Kennedy Farm, located in Washington County, Maryland, served as John Brown’s headquarters during the planning and execution of his 1859 raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry. Dr. Robert F. Kennedy purchased 194 acres of land from Antietam Iron Works in 1852. Kennedy took the small log cabin located on the property, and mounted it on a tall (one-story in height) stone foundation, added a frame addition to one side, and covered both with a gabled roof. He died in 1858. Along with a small band of 20 followers, Brown rented the two-story Kennedy farmhouse from trustee of Kennedy’s estate for $35 in gold. Thereafter, it served as the headquarters from which John Brown (1800-1859) planned and executed his raid on the Federal armory at Harpers Ferry in October 1859. Here, Brown stockpiled weapons and tools and pondered maps and vital statistics. On October 16, 1859, Brown’s small band seized the Harpers Ferry armory and took several hostages. The following day U.S. Army Colonel Robert E. Lee arrived with a company of Marines and cornered Brown and his men in the armory’s engine house. Brown eventually surrendered. By the end of the altercation, eighteen people had died—two enslaved people, three townsmen, one Marine, and ten of Brown’s men. A free black man named Heyward Shepherd, who worked for the B&O Railroad, was also killed. Brown was brought to trial in Charles Town (now West Virginia) for insurrection against the State of Virginia. The court found him guilty, and he was hanged on December 2, 1859. 📍 The Battle of Bull Run Two Major battles took place in Manassas during the Civil War in 1861 and 1862, in which the Confederate Armies won both. Over 4,500 troops were killed in this first Major Battle of the Civil War and it is also where General "Stone Wall" Jackson got his nickname. There are 29 critical acres of battlefield land in Virginia, at Glendale, and at Gaines’ Mill/Cold Harbor that we have the opportunity to save in perpetuity. These battlefields were scenes of some of the bloodiest fighting of the entire war, often with inconclusive outcomes. Taken together, these three sites bore witness to over 40,300 total casualties. If we don’t secure this land, new houses and other structures can be built on the property and the earthworks bulldozed.
