“Photography for me is not looking, it’s feeling. If you can’t feel what you’re looking at, then you’re never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures.” - Sir Don McCullin In 1966 The Sunday Times Magazine signed up a young photographer whose work would deliver the answer to the question of whether or not stills could compete with the stinging visceral impact of live television. In assignments that ranged from the Middle East to Vietnam, from the Congo to Biafra, Don McCullin caught the deep personal and emotional core of human experience trapped in the brutalities of history. McCullin, who was knighted in the 2017 New Year’s Honours List, first won notice in the late 1950s for his empathy with the street culture of his own north London roots. Therein was already the genius of his instinct for the underclass, from starving refugees to the cannon fodder of pointless wars. Sir Harry, who nurtured a cadre of top photojournalists throughout his time at The Sunday Times and beyond, said “Our cameramen had more experience of combat than many of the young soldiers. McCullin always went with the front-line troops.” In an interview with Tina Brown at #SirHarrySummit on 15 May, the legendary photojournalist will reflect on the futility of violence and how he has “sentenced himself to peace.” Tune into the livestream at sirharrysummit.org/watch #photojournalism #donmccullin #tinabrown #warphotography 📷 Reg Stewart

While waiting for the new US military aid package, the situation on the front in Donbas is very delicate with important advances by the Russian army. Volunteer and Ukrainian Army medical teams working in the area are saturated and in critical conditions, especially during the dark hours of the day, when soldiers can be evacuated safely from the front, hidden from the eye of Russian army FPVs. 1- Ukrainian Army paramedics unload a wounded soldier from the ambulance at the gate of a Military medical hospital in the Kurakhove area. 2- A wounded soldier is transferred from the stretcher to the surgery bed in a military hospital. 3- Military medical personnel treat a wounded soldier from the Krasnohorivka front. 4- Stretchers stained with blood at the door of a military hospital near the front in the Kurakhove area. 5- A Ukrainian soldier screams in pain as a military doctor treats his wounds caused by the Mortar impact on the Marynka front. 6- A Ukrainian soldier waits to be transferred to a hospital far from the front after being treated for burns suffered by the Russian artillery attack on the Krasnohorivka/Marynka front. 7- sandbags on the windows protecting from shrapnel one of the corridors of the military hospital. 8- Medical personnel treat Ukrainian soldier for combat wounds. 9- A slightly injured Ukrainian soldier walks down a military hospital hallway while waiting to be treated by medical personnel. Bulgarian general staff officers during the observation of an attack on the fortifications during the Siege of Turkish controlled Adrianople (Edirne). First Balkan War, November 1912. One of the purposes of this account is to provide insight about the wars and events preceding World War I that directly led to its outbreak. The Balkan Wars are one of those wars which helped set the stage for the “Guns of August”. The First Balkan War was a fought from 1912-1913 between the Balkan League and the Ottoman Empire. The Balkan League composed of Serbia, Montenegro, Greece, and Bulgaria, successfully defeated the Ottoman Empire, leading to the liberation of several Balkan territories. This war had significant implications for the region, reshaping political boundaries and power dynamics. It would be soon followed by the Second Balkan War of 1913. ℹ️ Britannica, Getty Images, Hellenistic History on FB, History.com, Wikipedia Interested to learn more about this obscure but important war that helped set the stage for the Great War? 📸 Photo by ullstein bild/ullstein bild via Getty Images #history #militaryhistory #balkanwars #balkans #firstbalkanwar #hellenistic #bulgaria #bulgarian #ottomanempire #turkey #ww1 #ww1history #warphoto #warphotography

🇲🇦𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐖𝐚𝐫🇩🇿 The Sand War was a border conflict between Algeria and Morocco fought from September,25 to October 30, 1963, although a formal peace treaty was not signed until February 20, 1964. It resulted largely from the Moroccan government’s claim to portions of Algeria’s Tindouf and Béchar provinces. The Sand War led to heightened tensions between the two countries for several decades. The Full-blown confrontation began on September 25, 1963 once Moroccan forces occupied the border towns of Hassi Beida and Tindjoub, beginning a battle with Algerian forces for control over the towns. In the north, Algeria opened a front near Ich, while Morocco launched an offensive towards Tindouf in the south. Cuban troops arrived in Algeria to prepare for an offensive into eastern Morocco, prompting Morocco to prepare for a second offensive towards Tindouf. However, both attacks were suspended, and a ceasefire was officially declared on October 30, 1963. This ceasefire marked the first multinational peacekeeping mission conducted by the Organisation of African Unity. A formal peace treaty was eventually signed on February 20, 1964. French sources reported Algerian casualties to be 60 dead and 250 wounded, with later works giving a number of 300 Algerian dead. Morocco officially reported to have suffered 39 dead. Moroccan losses were probably lower than the Algerians’ but are unconfirmed, with later sources reporting 200 Moroccan dead. #war #warhistory #warphotos #warphoto #warphotography #military #militaryhistory #africa #afrika #northafrica #northafrican #warinafrica #morocco #morocco🇲🇦 #algeria #algeria🇩🇿 #🇲🇦🇩🇿 #🇩🇿 #🇲🇦 #sandwar #sandwar1963 #1960s #1963 #warfare #desertwarfare #ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴀɴᴅᴏ #fyp

The Cazadores Secret Mission to El Salvador: In 1982, the Venezuelan Government sent a secret training mission to help the Salvadoran Army refine their counterinsurgency capabilities. Each Venezuelan group that went to El Salvador was made up of 12 men and a leader and those selected for this mission were to meet a very stringent set of requirements: a minimum of three years as a Cazador, to be a graduate of the Venezuelan Platoon Commander Course and to have completed a course abroad, such as the US Army’s Ranger course, Colombia’s Lancero course or Guatemala’s Kaibil Course. This mission and valuable support from Venezuela to El Salvador was not decided upon in the country’s congress but rather decided on directly by President Luis Herrera Campins and by February 1982, the Venezuelan Cazadores selected for the mission were told that they were going to provide training to the army of a Central American nation. The men quickly figured out that they would be going to El Salvador. The men were sent to El Salvador clandestinely, travelling on separate commercial airline flights. Retired Venezuelan Colonel Ricardo Semenzin said that he and his peers were practically infiltrated as tourists. The Venezuelan Cazadores arrived in El Salvador in May of 1982 and at the Venezuelan Embassy in San Salvador, they received a complete brief on the situation in country and work began to train their Salvadoran counterparts in Venezuela’s successful brand of counterinsurgency tactics. Upon graduation from the Venezuelan course, Salvadoran Cazadores Officers were presented with the metallic Cazadores collar insignia and green beret with the orange pentagon – symbol of their Venezuelan counterparts along with folding-stock FN FAL rifles which were carried by the Venezuelan Cazadores. He wore the uniform from the beginning of his service, in 2014. After my husband’s death, we made a shelf at home with one of his hobbies: tin soldiers and his awards from 2014. Now it is all very precious to our son Artem. I also chose one of his photos because it makes me and our children glad to see him, he is always with us, so we are all together!» Shykalov Kostiantyn, a junior sergeant of the 110th separate territorial defense brigade, died on December 5, 2022, on the outskirts of Zelene Pole, Donetsk region. 🇺🇬 𝐔𝐠𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚-𝐓𝐚𝐧𝐳𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐖𝐚𝐫 🇹🇿 The Uganda–Tanzania War, also known as the Kagera War was fought between Uganda and Tanzania from October 1978 until June 1979 and led to the overthrow of Ugandan President Idi AminThe war was preceded by a deterioration of relations between Uganda and Tanzania following Amin’s 1971 overthrow of President Milton Obote, who was close to the President of Tanzania, Julius Nyerere. Over the following years, Amin’s regime was destabilised by violent purges, economic problems, and dissatisfaction in the Uganda Army. The circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the war are not clear, and differing accounts of the events exist. In October 1978, Ugandan forces began making incursions into Tanzania. Later that month, the Uganda Army launched an invasion, looting property and killing civilians. Ugandan official media declared the annexation of the Kagera Salient. On November 2, Nyerere declared war on Uganda and mobilised the Tanzania People’s Defence Force (TPDF) to retake the salient. Nyerere also mobilised Ugandan rebels loyal to Obote and Yoweri Museveni to weaken Amin’s regime. After Amin failed to renounce his claims to Kagera and the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) failed to condemn the Ugandan invasion, the TPDF occupied the towns of Masaka and Mbarara in southern Uganda. Eventually The war severely harmed Tanzania’s fragile economy and inflicted long-lasting damage to Kagera. It also had severe economic consequences in Uganda, and brought about a wave of crime and political violence as the UNLF government struggled to maintain order. Political disagreements and the persistence of the remnants of the Uganda Army in the border regions ultimately led to the outbreak of the Ugandan Bush War in 1980. #war #warhistory #military #militaryhistory #warphotos #warphotography #warphoto #history #historical #africa #eastafrica #uganda🇺🇬 #uganda #tanzania🇹🇿 #tanzania #🇺🇬 #🇹🇿 #kagera #kagerawar #ugandatanzaniawar #coldwar #coldwarera #1970s #70s #afrika #warfare #ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴀɴᴅᴏ #milita #fyp

Hello everyone, it’s been a long while since I’ve posted as I’ve been either too busy with general life stuff or not had any particular motivation or inspiration, but enough of my excuses! Hope you are all well and 2024 is working out well for you. If you are familiar with my work you will know that urban decay and abandonment is a big theme and there is a definite crossover with ‘urbex’ art so I’ve been thinking of introducing pure urbex photography as an art form, of course some may end up as a painting some time if I get round to it. Therefore, I am very happy to present my photographs of the Anti Aircraft Battery remains at Blantyreferme in the eastern suburbs of Glasgow. It is an incredible place with an interesting history and makes for some amazing photo opportunities in its graffiti covered nooks and crannies… Enjoy! 🇹🇩𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧-𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐲𝐚𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐫🇱🇾 The Chadian–Libyan War was a series of military campaigns in Chad between 1978 and 1987, fought between Libyan and allied Chadian forces against Chadian groups supported by France, with the occasional involvement of other foreign countries and factions. Libya had been involved in Chad’s internal affairs prior to 1978 and before Muammar Gaddafi’s rise to power in Libya in 1969, beginning with the extension of the Chadian Civil War to northern Chad,The conflict was marked by a series of four separate Libyan interventions in Chad, taking place in 1978, 1979, 1980–1981 and 1983–1987. On all of these occasions, Gaddafi had the support of a number of factions participating in the civil war, while Libya’s opponents found the support of the French government, which intervened militarily to support the Chadian government in 1978, 1983 and 1986.The pattern of the war delineated itself in 1978, with the Libyans providing armour, artillery and air support and their Chadian allies the infantry, which assumed the bulk of the scouting and fightingThis pattern was radically changed in 1986, towards the end of the war, when most Chadian forces united in opposing the Libyan occupation of northern Chad with a degree of unity that had never been seen before in Chad. This deprived the Libyan forces of their habitual infantry, exactly when they found themselves confronting a mobile army, well provided now by the United States, Zaire and France with anti-tank and anti-air missiles, thus cancelling the Libyan superiority in firepower. What followed was the Toyota War, in which the Libyan forces were routed and expelled from Chad, putting an end to the conflict #war #warhistory #military #militaryhistory #warphotos #warphoto #warphotography #africa #northafrica #chad #chad🇹🇩 #libya #libya🇱🇾 #🇱🇾 #🇹🇩 #chadlibyanwar #chadianlibyanwar #chadianlibyanconflict #northafrica #centralafrica #warinafrica #desert #desertwarfare #warfare #ᴄᴏᴍᴍᴀɴᴅᴏ #fyp

Warning - graphic image. Heavy Artillery squads at the battle of the Somme (1916) The most commonly used gun was by far the 18PDR field gun,of which 808 were deployed during the Battle of the Somme. This gun was the most frequently used field gun used by the British Royal Field Artillery in the First World War. After these were the 4.5- and 6-inch Howitzers, and the 60 pounder guns. #somme #lightinfantry #warishell #greatwar  #thegreatwar #ww1  #wwi  #worldwarone  #armyhistory  #battles  #warriors  #warphotography  #wartoendallwars  #armisticeday  #ptsd  #massive  #giantwheel  #warishell  #transportationdesign #  #britisharmy  #frencharmy  #ustroops  #ushistory  #heer  #germany  #1917

Following on from the last post, I can't wait to see the film "Lee" later this year and to use my new Rolliflex camera. Thank you to my friend Claire from Women Reporters In WW2 & The Associated Press Living History Group for helping with some of my kit questions, looking at images of war correspondents showed such an array of kit, it's been fascinating. The photograph of Lee Miller was taken by David E. Scherman NC0051-9 (Copyright Lee Miller Archives, England 2018). She was the only woman correspondent at the Siege of St Malo, 1944. #womenatwar #womenshistory #WarCorrespondent #WarPhotographer #warreporter #LeeMiller #Lee #LeeFilm #LeeMovie #USArmy #WW2 #WWII #warphotography #livinghistory #research #reenactor #vintagecamera #Rolliflex
