Hopper-Goetschius house. Located in upper saddled River, this house was July in 1739 by Abraham Hopper. The house is the oldest house in Upper Saddle River. It is known to have existed in 1739, but some local maps refer to it in 1710. The house was in the hopper family until 1814, when the Goetschius family purchased the house. The house did not have running water until 1963, they used the well. In the mid 80’s, the family gave it to the historical society and the town. The Van Riper barn..the last pic… dates to 1800 and is one of the few examples of a new world Dutch barn that is still in existence. #vanriperfarms #newworlddutchbarn #oldstonehousemuseum #uppersaddlerivernj #bergencountyhistory #bergencountyhistoricalsociety #bergenchecked #hoppergoetschiushouse #hoppergoetschiusmuseum

🇺🇸 The Campbell-Christie House c.1774. "This Dutch Style sandstone house had stood in New Milford since the Revolution. Faced with demolition it was saved for our country’s heritage by moving it to this site on September 27, 1977 🇺🇸 Jacob Campbell, a stonemason, constructed this store in New Milford, NJ on land owned by his father, William Campbell, who kept a tavern on the north side of the road. Private Jacob Campbell served with the Bergen Militia during the American Revolution. In 1795 a Blacksmith by the name of John D. Christie purchased the house and operated it as a tavern. 🇺🇸 J. Walter Christie, born here on May 6, 1865, achieved fame as a mechanical genius and inventor. At 16 years of age, he worked on pioneer submarines and developed turret tracks and gun mounts for battleships. He built and raced cars, holding American and world speed records before being severely injured in a crash in 1907. He later invented automotive front-wheel drive, used in the manufacture of fire trucks. but is best known as the “father of the modern tank.” 🇺🇸 #themoreyouknow #sawsomethingnewtoday #bergencountyhistoricalsociety #bergencountyhistory #campbellchristiehouse #historicnewbridgelanding #revolutionarywar #americanrevolution #americanrevolutionarywar #nj #njhistory #history #americanhistory #nerd #nerds #ilovehistory #instahistory

SUPER, SUPER amped for this label rebrand! Same great Musket, but now struttin' around in a BEAUTIFUL new outfit! . . When we first opened and we were naming our beers, we named our hazy IPA 'Musket Haze' as a tribute to the vital Revolutionary War events that took place in our neighborhood, specifically the events at New Bridge landing down the block. The old bridge was dubbed "The Bridge that saved a nation" in reference to George Washington's Continental Army BARELY evading British forces by racing across the Hackensack River in retreat. Once through, they made their way to Pennsylvania, traveled south, and on Christmas night of 1776, they crossed the Delaware River, stormed Trenton with a surprise attack, and captured over 1000 (massively hungover) Hessian soldiers. While Washington was not able to hold Trenton, the attack showed that the Continental Army was no joke and is considered an important turning point in the War for American Independence. Everybody took notice, including others who were tired of living under British rule. . . It is with great pride that we present our rebranding of our flagship IPA Musket Haze. We couldn't think of a more appropriate representation of the spirit of this beer than a painting of ACTUAL Musket Haze! Lol . . We would like to thank the Bergen County Historical Society for granting us permission to use their painting "The War of Outpost, events of March 1780 at Historic New Bridge Landing" (Painting by Jeff Trexler) for our label. PLEASE go check our their page and check out their Museum down the road at New Bridge Landing. We've put a QR code on the can with more info. These people do an incredible job of preserving our local history and we're incredibly thankful for their gesture! . . So there you have it...Musket Haze on the outside...and Musket Haze within. Come get some, baby. 78 Johnson Ave in Hackensack, right behind the tombstones ✌🏼❤ 🇺🇸 🍺 #hackensackbrewing #bergencountyhistoricalsociety

Celebrating World Poetry Day with the poem that started it all! “Tell Me Your Story” was my response to learning about a rifle on display in the Bergen County Historical Society in New Jersey. I was fascinated by the handful of details that were known about it and even more by the questions it sparked. This poem was my attempt to try and imagine the possibilities that might have filled in the blanks of its story. From there I got the idea to continue that exercise of writing poems and stories that drew inspiration from historical artifacts and historic sites. So because that idea of wishing an object could tell it’s own story and desire to connect with the past through the tangible traces left behind was the running theme in my book it only seemed right that this poem would be both it’s opening piece and namesake. #WorldPoetryDay #poetry #poem #HistoricalFiction #PoetsOfInstagram #ShortStories #HistoricalFictionWriter #ShortStory #NewJersey #NewJerseyHistory #BergenCounty #BergenCountyHistoricalSociety #hackensack #HackensackRiver #RevolutionaryWar #18thCentury #18thCenturyRifle

Girl Scout Troop 3280 started our summer off with a trip from fellow NJ Girl Scout and friend of the troop, Ms. Muriel for the Pinkster celebration at Historic New Bridge Landing! . We started our girl-led trip to the Cheesecake Factory, where we found a bonus classic car show in the parking lot! . After a lovely lunch (with cheesecake for dessert, of course!), we headed over to Historic New Bridge Landing to learn about the Revolutionary War history that took place there, and of course, all about the history of Pinkster! 🌸 . We had our silhouettes made, played a spirited game of graces, danced around the maypole and enjoyed period music and tours of the historic buildings. . One of our own Gold Award Girl Scouts (she’s wrapping up her project this summer!) even met a Cold War era veteran to interview for her Gold Award project. . Did we mention that all active cookie sellers in our troop are GSGNY Cookie Executives? (All selling over 500+ boxes each!) . We’re so proud of all of the hard work and dedication of our Girl Scouts and parents who always show up to make each trip as fun as possible! . Thank you to Ms. Muriel for the invitation to Pinkster, we had a great time meeting the other Girl Scouts there as well! . It’s official! A beautiful day celebrating the train station as Westwood’s first listing on the National Register of Historic Places and a proud recipient of a Bergen County Historical Society historic marker. . The unveiling ceremony was hosted by the Westwood Historic Preservation Commission and Heritage Society, with guest speaker & local architect William J. Martin, AIA. . The station is significant for its relation to the development of Westwood and its distinct architectural history. It’s period of significance is 1932, corresponding to the date of construction. Designed by Graham King, the lead architect of the Erie Railroad, the station exterior is distinguished by Briar Hill stone imported from Ohio & New York State, and otherwise not used elsewhere locally. It was a great day! We recently took a field trip to River Edge to check out some of the Dutch colonial houses at historic New Bridge Landing. This is the Demarest House, built in 1794. It looks a lot like the old wing of the Abram Demaree House, which was constructed 30 years earlier. The name of the River Edge house comes from another descendant of David Demarest, the French Huguenot who settled in today’s Bergen County in the late 17th century. #journeythroughjersey #njhistory #njhistorictrust #njhistorichomes #newbridgelanding #bergencountyhistory #bergencountyhistoricalsociety #jerseyhistory #historicalnj #dutchcolonialarchitecture #earlyamericanarchitecture #njlandmark #colonialamericanhistory

#TheMoonFireAndSkyChallenge day 14 & 15. Author Check In: I’ve done a little bit of writing but getting back into a routine at work has been taking a lot of time. I’m still thinking about the antagonists and some gaps in the planning of Changing Times. But the most exciting thing is that I received the first copies of my debut book Tell Me Your Story! I can now actually hold a book I wrote in my hands! I’m still waiting on the publishing company to get it on retailer sites and lists but it’s so exciting to have made it to this stage. It really hits home that this is for real. I definitely have a lot of work to do to meet my goals for the last half of the month but hopefully will be able to accomplish it, and hopefully will include being able to see the book for sale. Day 14 asked if there were any trigger warnings for my WIP. I don’t foresee my writing including any of the common trigger concerns. I think of most of my writing as being appropriate for adolescents and up so I try to keep the content within that range. I don’t write super graphic or mature content. History of course does include some sensitive and serious themes but my goal is to present them in ways that encourages learning and empathy without triggering readers. #HistoricalFantasy #AmWriting #AuthorUpdate #TellMeYourStory #WritingCommunity #AuthorsOfInstagram #HistoricalFiction #poetry #WritingInspiration #HistoricalFictionLoversUnite #bookstagram #bookish #PoetsOfInstagram #18thCentury #19thCentury #SybilLudington #FortMontgomery #BergenCountyHistoricalSociety #HudsonValleyHistory #HudsonValley #HudsonValleyNY #NewAuthor #HistoryLover #Museums #HistoryMuseums #history #MuseumLife #MuseumLover #heirlooms

#SelfPromoteSunday This week I got the cover art for my upcoming book which means it’s in the final stretch before it is finished and ready to be shared. Tell Me Your Story is a collection of short stories and poems I’ve written and revised over many years all inspired by visits to museums, learning about local history, and hearing stories from family members and the heirlooms passed down. I hope the book will help inspire readers to look for the stories all around us and appreciate the value of history that didn’t always make it into the text books. History has always been a passion of mine and an infinite source of inspiration. I especially love the personal stories of everyday people. My experience with 18th century reenactment and living history have helped me gain first hand experience for many of the details I include in my writing. @julieembletonauthor #TellMeYourStory #WritingCommunity #AuthorsOfInstagram #HistoricalFiction #poetry #WritingInspiration #AboutTheAuthor #HistoricalFictionLoversUnite #FindMyWritingCommunity #bookstagram #bookish #PoetsOfInstagram #18thCentury #19thCentury #SybilLudington #FortMontgomery #BergenCountyHistoricalSociety #HudsonValleyHistory #HudsonValley #HudsonValleyNY #ColonialWilliamsburg #NewAuthor #HistoryLover #Museums #HistoryMuseums #history #MuseumLife #MuseumLover #heirlooms

#writerfriendschallenge Day 25 Tell all Tuesday - How did you come up with your title? My upcoming book is called Tell Me Your Story. Before I even had the idea of this book I visited the Bergen County Historical Society where I learned about a Revolutionary War rifle in their collection. I was fascinated to learn all the little details about it and how it came to the museum. Those details gave very few definitive answers about the story behind it but were certainly intriguing and sparked so many possibilities. Hearing about it I couldn’t help trying to picture it’s owner and what might have happened in the final moments when they were separated (the rifle was found in a river). Those thoughts led to a poem where I tried to convey my fascination and the great potential I felt while looking at that display case. A few years later I realized museums, historical sites, even our own homes are full of objects just like that rifle with their own rich and interesting stories, whether we can know them for certain or only speculate. I even realized I had been writing these stories and poems already. So I revisited past writings, choosing ones I was still happy with or only needed some revisions, and wrote new ones as I came across other historical treasures and put them together in this collection. Coming up with a title for the book it only seemed natural to name it for the poem that really captured (and inspired) the purpose of the collection. #booktitle #writingcommunity #historicalfiction #tellmeyourstory #museummuses #authorsofinstagram #bookstagram #inspiration #writinginspiration #americanrevolution #revolutionarywar #historylovers #bergencountyhistoricalsociety #writersofinstagram #museumlovers

I’ve learned it is #selfpromotesunday so I figured I would share a bit about the book that is currently in the process of being published. My debut book is Tell Me Your Story which is a collection of my writings from the past few years. A mixture of historical fiction short stories and poems, all inspired by artifacts, family heirlooms, and anecdotes from history that have intrigued and inspired me. They draw from personal experience with living history and museum work as well as my own family stories and heirlooms. You will drive right by this one if you are nor looking for it. #oldtappannj #historicbergencounty #bergencountynj #bergenchecked #historicbergencounty #bergencountyhistory #bergencountyhistoricalsociety #njhistorichouse

The Garret Durie house. Located In Hillsdale, the house was built in 1767 by Durie. During the revolution, it was looted by both armies. Durie actually wrote accounts of these looting and noted specific items taken by both armies, numerous times , throughout the war. #hillsdalenj #bergencountynj #bergenchecked #historicalhouse #prerevolutionary #duriehouse #crossroadsoftheamericanrevolution #historicbergencounty #hillsdalenjhome #bergencountyhistoricalsociety

Posted @withregram • @foxandstokes In honor of Women’s History Month, we are celebrating the great-grandmother of @maxstokesrealestate - Gert Jasper - and grandmother Bernadine Mechanic. Both were Ho-Ho-Kus legends who were far beyond their time. In this photo Gert is standing in front of the Jasper Building (where the current Grannie’s Attic resides) that she purchased in the early 1900s for the family’s retail business, King Auto Parts. Upon her sudden death in 1952 the business was taken over by her daughter, Bernadine, who like her mother was a visionary well ahead of her time. The business was expanded with a wholesale division called Allendale Automotive which employed a significant population of Ho-Ho-Kus and surrounding communities. Today we salute these 2 amazing women who helped shape #hohokus as we know it today 💪 #womenshistorymonth #womenempowerment #womeninbusiness #womenofhistory #hohokusnj #historicrealestate #history #bergencountyhistoricalsociety #bergencountyrealtor #bergencounty

This 1778 map of New Jersey calls a tributary of the Hackensack River “Demaries Kill.” Considering its location north of Schraalenburgh township, it’s likely named for Abram Demaree—whose popular general store and tavern was about a decade old at the time the map was made. See the entire NJ map in the second photo. #abramdemareehomestead #njhistory #njhistorictrust #newjerseyhistory #jerseyhistory #historicnj #nj #antiquemapsandprints #oldmapsandprints #bergencountyhistory #bergencountyhistoricalsociety #rocklandcountyhistoricalsociety #rocklandcountyhistory #hackensackriver #preservenjhistory #njlandmark #oldnj #americanhistorymuseum #maphistory #njlore #youdontknowjersey #pascackvalley #northernvalleydemarest #northernvalley #antiquemaps

As part of our Presidents Day celebration of George Washington in Bergen County, here’s an illustration of General Washington in the former Township of Schraalenburgh (today’s Dumont). He and his troops are passing what’s left of the Banta Homestead on August 22, 1780, after it was burned down by Tories. The Banta House was rebuilt in the Dutch Sandstone style and is now part of the Dumont Public Library. Happy Presidents Day! #hackensack #bergencounty #bergencountyhistoricalsociety #leid #munsch #hackensackschools Hackensack, NJ was predominantly German in 1884. My great Aunt Carolyn (Lena Leid) was born in in 1874. (3 in from the left kneeling) her husband was considerably older by 25 years. I knew her until I was about 7, vividly. For a short time. She was cool, she was old as hell, well traveled, highly educated and a wise ass till the day she died. her cremains blew back on the family when they cast them off and covered everyone. Basically one of the reasons I chose my daughters name the other is obvious. Carolyn. I was left with a trunk full of artifacts and many of her hand written note books. And hundreds of photos and their negatives from the 1880's forward. Her husband built every existing home on summit and prospect ave. The depression in 1929 hit and took them for a ride. I have a mass of some dead serious historical photos from our county. I'm going to publish.
