In 1978 he became general secretary of the South African Council of Churches and an eloquent and outspoken advocate for the rights of Black South Africans. Tutu emphasized nonviolent protest and encouraged other countries to apply economic pressure to South Africa. In 1984 he received the Nobel Prize for Peace for his role in opposing apartheid. In 1986 he was elected the first Black archbishop of Cape Town and titular head of South Africa’s 1.6-million-member Anglican church. He retired from the primacy in 1996 and became chairman of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, charged with hearing evidence of human rights violations under white rule. Most of our current choices are based on attempting to protect ourselves from repeated negative, past experiences or disappointments. Whatever we fear, we attract. Every single choice has the ability to propel us forward or cause stagnation or regression. Hope can never be fully experienced if fear is allowed to overshadow its light. The film tells the story of the friendship between the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyaco and Desmond Tutu, the South African bishop, and presents a beautiful, useful and simple (as is usually the case in such configurations) knowledge about living in joy 😁. It's not about holy sages, but about people who, on the foundations of heavy events, built themselves stronger and sent good into the world. Their friendship delighted me. Great respect, great joy to be with each other and constant jokes and laughter. I heartily recommend this movie! 🤩 I also recommend Kino Muza. Cool location (Święty Marcin street) and the arrangement of both the facility itself as a building and the interior. A fun place! One of our greatest heroes. Bishop Tutu (1931-2021) fought his whole life for education equality in South Africa. He left teaching to become a priest in the Anglican Church to continue advocating for the oppressed. Won the Nobel Peace prize for speaking out against Apartheid(racial segregation and oppression) even though white supremacists threatened his life constantly. He lead the peace and reconciliation council. He used God’s mandate to speak truth on injustice, racism advocate for the environment, equality and empowerment for black, women, lgbt. This is a person we should emulate. Happy Sunday!! The Reverend Dr. Roz — Still here and still doing the work where it’s needed most after 25 years. Ha! Pictured here with my Dad and Rev. Dr. Marcia Clinkscales at my #Ordination many moons ago. I’ll post about #BishopTutu when I’m ready to mourn publicly that loss of my Professor. My walk down memory lane has me laughing at myself sometimes. I used to say, “I shouldn’t have to wear a clerical collar. Folks should know/respect ministers by what we do.” Wisdom (and years of being disrespected) makes that so naive a thought now. I see folks calling themselves “influencers” by what they do on socmed and think it’s cute, but in the words of the late Rev. C.T. Vivian, “what are you doing for others” in real life?? I don’t seek fame or fortune or anything else. Do good irrespective of whether anyone is watching you. Otherwise, you’re just performing. Life is about love through action, and if your actions ain’t loving… Bye! Manipulating audiences ain’t ministry. The sacred texts report that Jesus said, “Have faith in God.” My faith is strong and relentless, bold and courageous, fire and ice. “Even if…” is one of my favorite sermons to preach because I often need to hear it as much as those who say it still resonates for them. The bottom line is that if “mustard seed” faith can move mountains, then together, we can fix our communities and world even as logic/reason/law/courts/legislators/governments/corporations/others fail us. In these days full of loss and disease, we need hope — we need each other. The closer we authentically grow together, the closer we grow to Wholeness/Oneness. I like to think of God as center hub and us as spokes on a wheel. The closer (or farther apart) we grow, the closer (or farther apart) we grow to (or from) God. Even if I’m wrong, I have faith in God to help even me. I’ve been through too much to doubt, fear, or scratch when not itching. Thoughtfulness. Joy. Belief. Faith. Jokes. Wit. Smiles. Exhuberance. Integrity. Other words said to describe him were Punctual. Meticulous. Courteous. Endearing. Forgiveness. Human. Ambitious. Sensitive. Father. Committed. Gourmand. Bibliophile. Respect. Forward-looking. Hopeful. Conciliation. Non-violent. Universal. Consensus. Passion. Mediator. Truth. Extraordinary. I started working on this painting to honor South African Bishop Desmond Tutu and his positive pro-democracy legacy after his recent passing at 90 years old. The peaceful transition from minority rule to democracy has been accomplished in many countries such as Mahatma Gandhi's India, as well as in South Africa. I finished the painting yesterday on the first anniversary of a very monumental day in American history, January 6, 2021.
