Day #2 shoot at the Anzac Memorial, Hyde Park on April 26th with Peter Milliken and our cinematographer @t_oxford. We filmed Peter visiting a replica headstone of William Allan (Allen) Irwin DCM (Peter’s Great Uncle) which was on display. While there we also filmed Pete at the soil exhibition, which houses soil from different townships in NSW where the soldier’s enlisted in WWI. Connection to soil, land, country is so important for First Nations people and such an integral part of our story. It was interesting to see how the soil from Gomeroi country (e.g., Moree, Coonabarabran, Tamworth) where William spent his time shearing as a young man, contrasted with the soil from Mont Saint-Quentin, France where William would be fatally wounded in August 31st, 1918. It was a stark reminder of how far William was still from home. 🎬 Bringing His Spirit Home an @aftrs Master of Arts Screen production #aboriginal #firstnations #documentary #film #country #anzacday #recognition #truthtelling #spiritual #ww1

Failure isn’t failing… Failure is refusing to get back up and fighting for yourself! Before I started 75 hard I had already made a commitment to myself that I was going to make my health a number 1 priority in 2024. I am not in a position to successfully complete 75 hard, especially if the intensive rules will be a detonate to my health. I am still committed to making health my number 1 priority. I was inspired by the deep reciprocity and radical hospitality in Māori culture during my experience at the recently convened Commonwealth Association of Museums Triennial Conference in Aotearoa and wrote some reflections punctuating my time there and feeling space since then. ‘Radical With-nessing on Common Ground’ raises important questions that emerged during the gathering around the possibility/challenges of decolonisation, aspects of collaboration, guardianship and community engagement. “How does ecological and biocultural restoration function in places that are rising daily to encounter and resist the hydra-head of the colonialist-capitalist order? Can our more-than-human allies provide us with new museum strategies as we develop tools to counter the 3Cs, Colonialism, Capitalism and Christianisation of our spaces? Collective remembering of our diverse creation stories, plant allies, folklore, cosmological entities, memories and mythologies might offer a wellspring of resources as we consider the importance of cultural identity within shaping viable community spaces that are critical, compassionate, adaptable and self-determined.” Read the reflection at link in biography. When you dodge external conflicts, you ignite internal turmoil. True care involves risking discomfort for genuine connection. By holding back your truth and emotions, you undermine the relationship's potential. I understand the fear of diving deep. But what's the price of suppression? Many justify their silence... "It's not worth it." "It won't make a difference." "I've tried before." Sure, if you're dealing with someone unwilling to acknowledge their role and resorts to stonewalling or gaslighting, it might seem futile, and leaving could be an option. Yet, most caring individuals desire honesty, even if it stings initially. Ask yourself: Would you prefer masked feelings or respectful transparency? Too often, we have a propensity to hide our grief; to present ourselves as whole. We hesitate to share our personal suffering. We are ashamed, concerned about other’s perceptions of us. We associate vulnerability with weakness, so we cultivate and curate an image of strength. A public facade of strength masks private despair, hopelessness, the realities of a fractured life, and a sense of loneliness and isolation.   Truth-telling demands courage and empowers. Honesty and openness draw us into deep relationship with others. To speak the whole truth in times of deep sorrow and confusion brings healing and hope. #grief #griefjourney #griefsupport #griefhealing #griefjournaling #truth #truthteller #truthtelling #courage #couragequotes #speakthetruth #speakinsorrow #griefandloss #faithblog #themaskswewear #facade #façade #facadeofstrength #foundationforhope #hope #findingjoy #findingjoyinthejourney

I used to assume that the Bible world consists of two groups of people — Jews and Gentiles — but these verses say that that is not the case. In fact, there is unity. All of us belong to Christ. All of us are Abraham’s descendants. All of us are Abraham’s heirs. And all of us experience the fulfillment of the promises of God. Here is what God’s Word says in Galatians 3:26-29: “You are all God’s children by believing in Christ Jesus. Clearly, all of you who were baptized in Christ’s name have clothed yourselves with Christ. There are neither Jews nor Greeks, slaves nor free people, males nor females. You are all the same in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendants and heirs, as God promised.” What does this mean? That means to commit genocide against another culture is to commit genocide against God’s people, whoever they may be. Why not rather than genocide we instead try to find ways to love one another and to be unified? #marturia #truthtelling #endgenocidenow #ceasefirenow #watermelon

https://amzn.to/4aKfOz6 (Kindle) https://amzn.to/3Uf58lc (Paperback) When Sharde M. Davis turned to social media during the summer of racial reckoning in 2020, she meant only to share how racism against Black people affects her personally. But her hashtag, Black in the Ivory, went viral, fostering a flood of Black scholars sharing similar stories. Soon the posts were being quoted during summer institutes and workshops on social justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion. And in fall 2020, faculty assigned the tweets as material for course curriculum. This curated collection of original personal narratives from Black scholars across the country seeks to continue the conversation that started with Black in the Ivory. Put together, the stories reveal how racism eats its way through higher education, how academia systemically ejects Black scholars in overt and covert ways, and how academic institutions—and their individual members—might make lasting change. While anti-Black racism in academia is a behemoth with many entry points to the conversation, this book marshals a diverse group of Black voices to bring to light what for too long has been hidden in the shadow of the ivory tower. True reconciliation involves listening to and elevating Indigenous voices, allowing them to tell their own stories and truths. It's not just about creating spaces but also about who leads the narrative within them. The history of our people is complex and intertwined with layers that cannot be erased, only acknowledged and learned from. At the Indigenous Gathering Place Society, we stand for a future where Indigenous leadership is at the forefront of conversations about their own history and culture. Let's work together to ensure that the paths we tread are respectful, truthful, and inclusive, giving space and voice to those who can guide us toward genuine understanding and reconciliation. Join us in supporting the creation of The Indigenous Gathering Place, an initiative led by and for Indigenous communities. Because when we make room for true voices to be heard, the journey towards reconciliation becomes more honest and impactful. #IndigenousLeadership #TruthTelling #Reconciliation #CulturalHeritage #NothingAboutUsWithoutUs

Hey IG! 🌟 I’m thrilled to announce the launch of my new blog where I’ll be sharing stories about bold moments (in my life & in deez streets) and all the emotions they entail. From joy to disappointment, from relief to loneliness, and everything in between, this space will explore the full spectrum of that specific human experience. As a recovering people-pleaser, I’ve come to understand the pressure to conform and seek external validation. But as Mohammed el-Kurd eloquently put it, “better to be a buzzkill than a bootlicker.” This courageous statement, during a low moment, inspired me to embrace authenticity and challenge the status quo, even when it’s uncomfortable. Through storytelling and truth-telling, I hope to amplify marginalized voices and explore the resilience of those who dare to speak truth to power in both fundamental and transformative ways. In a world where truth-tellers are often marginalized, I’m committed to shining a light on their stories and experiences. Join me as we navigate the complexities of “being real” and find solidarity in our shared pursuit of transparency, justice and freedom. My hope is to create a community where boldness is celebrated, and where the courage to speak up/out is met with love, respect and understanding. … #communitygram #communityspace #betterthanbootlickers #recoveringpeoplepleasers #truthtelling #storytelling

We had three generations walking the Baw Baw Plateau at the weekend. It was Sage’s first overnight walk. Not bad for 13 months. The weather was cold and wet on the first day out but, overnight the wind softened, and, next day, the sun came out. It meant Sage could crawl around without getting soaked. And that meant she was very engaged with camping equipment as we packed up tents and stoves. Such a good weekend and lovely to think we are teaching little people who will be bushwalkers in the future. It was fun meeting up with friends from @vicmountntrampingclub too.

On this day in 1946, over 800 First Nations pastoral workers across north-west Western Australia embarked on a historic strike, demanding better wages and working conditions. This marked the first industrial action by Indigenous people since colonisation, lasting until 1949 and becoming Australia's longest strike. Dependence on unpaid First Nations labor had been prevalent since the 1860s, with workers often compensated only in rations. Discussions leading to the strike began in 1944, with key figures like Nyamal man Clancy McKenna and Nyangumarta man Dooley Bin Bin organising and mobilising workers across different stations. Despite facing arrests and government pressure, public support eventually led to the release of key organisers. Many participants found newfound economic independence and did not return to the stations. While the strike didn't fully meet initial demands, it held immense historical significance, paving the way for equality for First Nations people and inspiring similar movements, like the Wave Hill Walk-Off in 1966. It stands as a testament to the power of community-led action in effecting change. #anu #fnp #PilbaraStrike #IndigenousRights #HistoricalChange #TruthTelling

Today is the last day of our 30 Day Radical Honesty Challenge, and today (April 30) is National Honesty Day! If you haven’t participated in the earlier challenges, you can try some of the past prompts in our recent stories and posts. Today’s Challenge: Reach out to a relative, partner, friend or ex and ask to have a conversation about something you’ve avoided talking about. “There is something I want to tell you…” This is your chance to get something off your chest, bring up a difficult topic, or reveal something you have withheld that’s been weighing on you lately. You can begin the full conversation, or you can request a time to talk to another person. Each day in April, we gave you a prompt for something to reveal to another person. Similar to a personality or psychological test, go with the first thing you think or feel. While you reveal this information to another person, we want you to also *notice what you feel when you speak to the person* (and better yet, reveal what you notice afterwards). Try this experiment each day, and see if you can go with the very first thing that comes up for you. For example, if it’s “I feel happy about…” complete the sentence with the first thing that comes to mind. If a person comes to mind when you read the day’s experiment, that’s the person to try it with ;) If one of the challenges feels really hard for you, check in with yourself and notice what’s coming up—your bodily sensations, your emotions, your thoughts—and see if this hesitation leads you to discover something about yourself. Or, try something a little different that day. You are even allowed to give yourself a day off, too (no one is holding you to this, of course!) If you like this experiment and want to take a deeper dive, you can also sign up for our self-guided course in Radical Honesty, Get Over Shit and BE Happy! See link in bio to sign up and start the first course module today!

Watching the recordings from the Yoorrook Justice Commission is incredibly traumatic. Full respect to our brothers and sisters who have the grueling task of bringing this all to light. Listening to Premier Jacinta Allan share what she has learnt through this process is no surprise. If we had a dollar for every time one of our workshop attendees said "We didn't know this" we would be squillion-aires 10 x over! Don't wait for someone to tell you what to do, pick up a book, seek out First Nations media outlets, follow Indigenous people on socials. Educate yourself! With specific reference to massacres and dispossession, a few weeks back we recommended a book titled "The Squatters Grab" by Wal Walker. It details massacres and the dispossession that spread like contagion across Australia. Or try "Blood on the Wattle" by Bruce Elder. Hard to stomach but worthy of your time. #treaty #treatyforvictoria #firstnations #indigenousleadership #indigenouspeoples #reconciliation hashtag #nrw2024 #nowmorethanever #alwayswasalwayswillbe #NAIDOC2024 #NAIDOCWeek #BlakLoudProud #yoorrook #truthtelling #victoria #springst

Our 30 Day Radical Honesty Challenge is coming to a close soon! Start anytime or try some of the earlier prompts in our recent stories and posts. Today’s Challenge: Tell someone, “I feel proud of myself for…” Describe your accomplishments - brag a little (or a lot)! Notice your bodily sensations while you talk and brag about yourself to another person. What comes up for you? Each day in April, we’re giving you a prompt for something to reveal to another person. If you like this experiment and want to take a deeper dive, you can also sign up for our self-guided course in Radical Honesty, Get Over Shit and BE Happy! See link in bio to sign up and start the first course module today!

Some of you have asked what my issue is with the idea of the rapture and its connection with events happening in the world today — including the genocide in Gaza. This quote by Dean Flemming sums it all up pretty well by reminding us that the rapture disconnects the church from its mission in the world today by stealing its prophetic voice to testify to the truth and provide hope for the future. Because a rapture theology says, “Who cares? We’re supposed to be extracted from the world anyway as believers.” So that, in a nutshell, is my issue with rapture theology. But then again, I may be getting it all wrong. How do you reconcile rapture with the church’s mission in the world? #watermelon #truthtelling #rapture #marturia

A question… How have we ever, in church circles, come to the conclusion that pain must be disguised, struggle denied, and doubt dismissed? Why did we think we needed to present a shiny happy face to the world instead of a real one? Why, when we follow the God who weeps and bleeds: one well acquainted with sorrow and grief? I love these lines: “In Your wounds I find Room for all of mine” (From the song “Christ is Lower Still” by @theportersgate .) In our gatherings if there is no room for our messes and tears then there is no room for the Man of Sorrows either. #authenticity #authenticfaith #emotionalhonesty #examinedlife #truthtelling #godwithus #wrestlingwithfaith #questions #spiritualformation #iamlearning #reconstructingfaith #beingrefashioned #evolvingfaith

We’re getting close to the end of our 30 Day Radical Honesty Challenge! You can begin anytime, or jump around to try some of the first prompts in our stories if you haven’t yet. Today’s challenge is a solo exercise! This one you can do alone…Sit quietly and close your eyes. For five minutes, notice your inside, outside, and upside-down (your mind) at the same time. Try this as an awareness meditation exercise. Each Sunday, we’ll give you a prompt to try by yourself, as part of Radical Honesty is an awareness practice, too. Learning to simply notice your body, notice your surroundings, and notice your thoughts, without attaching any judgments or evaluations to them, is key to learning the distinction between noticing and imagining. Try these experiments each day, and see if you can go with the very first thing that comes up for you, or notice what’s in front of you without ‘searching’ for something to notice. If one of the challenges feels really hard for you, check in with yourself and notice what’s coming up—your bodily sensations, your emotions, your thoughts—and see if this hesitation leads you to discover something about yourself. Or, try something a little different that day. You are allowed to give yourself a day off, too :) If you like this experiment and want to take a deeper dive, you can also sign up for our self-course in Radical Honesty *Get Over Shit and BE Happy* See link in bio to register and begin the first course module now! #30daysofhonesty #radicalhonestyexperiment #honestyexperiment #30daysofradicalhonesty #truthtelling #vulnerabilityisstrength #justbehonest #howtobehonest #littlewhitelies #whatifwealltoldthetruth #authenticself #revealyourself #showyourself #monthlychallenge #truthbetold #letsbehonest #tellinglies #radicallyhonest #openandhonest #authenticity #vulnerability #gettingreal #howtotellthetruth #comingforth #feelyourfeelings #honestconversations #truthoftheday #honestyday #radicalhonestychallenge
