🔹 Голубоногая олуша 🔹 Территория обитания голубоногой олуши простирается от побережья западной Мексики до северо-западной стороны Южной Америки. Больше всего представителей голубоногой олуши распространилось на Галапагосских островах. Всего там встречается около сорока тысяч представителей вида. Часть птиц находится в Эквадоре и Перу. По своим параметрам птица довольно габаритная. Размер ее тела достигает 80 сантиметров в длину, а вес колеблется в районе 3 килограммов. Голубоногие олуши питаются только рыбой. Она позволяет им вырабатывать характерный пигмент, который называется картиноид. Этот пигмент является основной причиной их голубых лап. У олуши нет ноздрей, дышат они уголками клюва. У олуш, как и у нас с вами бинокулярное зрение. Глаза расположены не по бокам, а спереди головы. Брачный танец олуш может продолжаться несколько часов. Самец в надежде понравится, грациозно вышагивает, показывая свои синие ласты, и даже стреляет своими большими глазками. Но глаза самку совсем не интересуют. Она смотрит на его синие ноги. И чем насыщенней цвет перепончатых конечностей, тем здоровее будет потомство. Дело в том, что окрас синих ног говорит о хорошем питании его обладателя. A blue-footed booby in the Galápagos. These magnificent marine birds are native to tropical and subtropical regions of the eastern Pacific, and are easily recognisable because of their bright blue feet. The blue feet are used to attract mates. During courtship the male flaunts his blue feet by dancing in front of potential partners. . He then presents the materials required to make a nest. The booby mating dance also includes ‘sky-pointing’, where the male points his head and bill towards the sky while keeping the wings and tail raised. The word bobby probably comes from the Spanish word “bobo“, which means “stupid”. Early European colonists may have characterized these blue-footed bobbies like this when they saw them on land, but trust me, they ate not clumsy at all. They are just as graceful as all other flying beings I know.
The Galapagos blue-footed bobby in his environment. I guess he has the privilege of sitting on his own throne (aka rock). Blue-footed bobbies tend to be the most commonly encountered bobbies in Galapagos, but ironically they have the smallest population. They also nest between the Pacific Coast of Mexico and Peru, but around half of all blue-footed bobbies live in the Galapagos.

When I learned about the blue-footed bobby in biology class back at U.C. San Diego, I never thought that a few years later I would be able to see this bird in person on San Cristobal Island on the Galapagos. The female nesting and shading the eggs to keep them cool, the couple hanging out on the rock, and the males trying to impress the females with their turquoise feet- a sign of health- are all just examples of some of the pictures I took while staying on the designated path and trying to zoom in as close as possible to capture the birds without disturbing their lives too much. The birds might have looked elegant and mesmerizing to us, but our tour guide pointed out that the island was quite dry, drier than other years. This is clearly not a good sign. If the dry conditions continue over the next few years, the danger of parents abandoning their young due to lack of water and food increases.
