After three years of attempts, I finally saw my first Barred Owl, totally by accident. About a month ago, @jordanblaskeyphotography and I were out birding and had just decided to head to a new spot. As we walked back to our car we noticed something very large swoop to a branch and then moments later get swarmed by some very loud Blue Jays. As we got closer, it came into view. Finally, after years of searching, a Barred Owl just appeared out of nowhere. As if it couldn’t get any better, it flew from its first shadowy spot directly past us and onto this perfectly lit branch, away from the Blue Jays, where it quietly sat in the sun. By far one of the coolest birding moments I’ve had. These totally by chance encounters are the best experiences ever, especially when it’s a bird that’s evaded you for so long. I held onto this for a while because I felt like no photo could really capture what it felt like, but it was awesome that @jordanblaskeyphotography was there to see it as well. The Birthday Couple (Jonathan 22nd April, Angie 27th April). We are blessed with a love of family and children, and a passion for wild places, photography and drawing. Our love reminds us of a passage in Sunset on the Manyatta by Kenyan author Kenneth Watene: “Have you ever wondered why it was that we felt so free with each other? I suppose......It would seem as if you were a spirit that originally belonged to the same realm with my spirit, and our meeting was the rejoining of a splintered one.” On Angie’s special day I wanted to reflect on words I wrote in 2016 for our autobiography The Big Cat Man: “Talented artist that she is, Angie also has that wonderful gift of making wherever she settles into a home, of being able to convert mere bricks and mortar - soulless entities in themselves - into a repository for a rich tapestry of quilts and cushions, carpets and sofas, photographs and paintings, a place that breathes life, warmth and love. Trinkets and keepsakes are scattered like seashells on the beach of life, reminding one of the wonder of this world and comfort of home.”
