I've been really digging barrel aged offerings from @boulevard_beer lately, so when I heard their Dark Crator -- a German-style Doppelbock that is aged in bourbon barrels -- won a gold medal at 2023 FoBAB, I knew I had to review it on my YouTube channel, and this one was actually a live review. The beer pours out a deep amber color with a light tan head. The clarity is quite noticeable. The nose is nice, as dark fruits are runnin' wild like Hulkamania in the 80s. Outside of that, it's pretty mellow. The taste is toasted brown bread, honey, dark stone fruits and bourbon. It finishes with an oak tannin dryness, and it hides the alcohol quite well. The body is a bit thin, while the mouthfeel is softer and smoother than anticipated. It's also a very clean beer overall. I totally see why this won the aforementioned gold medal. While it's not one of my favorite barrel aged beers from them recently, it's still quality through and through. If you see a bottle still hanging out on the shelf, I highly recommend, especially since the value for Boulevard's beers are typically great.
