Over the past year so many dear friends and people in my life have been diagnosed with breast cancer, the prevalence is alarming. I've seen and witnessed the effects of this disease, changing and in some cases, ending lives. This hurts my heart as I breathe in the impacts emotionally and physically, and breathe out a wish for ease. I've been facilitating these workshops for almost 2 decades; in day formats, in my massage practice, short presentations, one - on - one sessions, and a few years ago I created this 6 week program for a more in depth dive into our breast health and ways we can offer ourselves care. Together we'll explore our breast health, and also different facets of our overall health, honouring how we are woven together through body, mind and spirit. There is an accessible movement and yoga practice each week, with meditations, and a different focus at each session over the course of the full program. Lactating breasts have a highly efficient blood supply, intricate lymphatic vessels for fluid drainage, abundant nerves, connective tissue, and active glandular tissue, including millions of microscopic interlacing ducts. 😫Vigorously massaging or squeezing the breast can lead to: ❌Tissue swelling ❌Bruising and swelling of milk-making cells ❌Collapse of ducts (many are close to the breast skin surface) ❌Injury to blood vessels ❌Breast abscess ✅The breast is a gland, similar to our thyroid or pancreas, not a muscle! Breast anatomy (and a little on physiology) - a great visual! Have you ever seen an actual illustration of the complexity that is the female breast? The female breast is a complex structure with glandular tissue surrounded by supporting and fat tissue. ✴️The glandular or mammary tissue consists of clusters of milk-producing cells, called alveoli, which fill with milk in between feeds and are surrounded by smooth muscle cells which contract to release milk during breastfeeding, which makes milk flow along the milk ducts. ✴️ Milk ducts are like little highways for the milk to flow along, each leads from a segment of alveoli to their opening at the end of the nipple. There are about 15-20 milk ducts in each breast. ✴️Surrounding the nipple is the areola, an area of skin that is darker than the rest of the breast. They can vary in size, shape and color. Having a high density breast tissue increases your risk of developing breast cancer. Breasts are made up of three different types of tissues that affect the density of your breasts. These include fibrous, glandular, and fatty tissue. YOUR BREAST ANATOMY We all talk about how important breast health is, but I thought it would be great to get to a deeper understanding of what the breast is actually composed of and it’s relationship to fascia - to you! How do we make breast health more tangible?! — Let’s find out… The breast is a specialized gland structure which evolves essentially as an appendage of the skin, and is composed of mammary glands surrounded by a fatty connective tissue called stroma (surrounding and supportive connective tissue around the mammary glands, the stroma has both fibrous and fatty components). The mammary glands are modified sweat glands. They consist of a series of ducts and secretory lobules (15-20). Each lobule consists of many alveoli (think little sacs like the lungs) drained by a single lactiferous duct. These ducts converge at the nipple like spokes of a wheel. There are no muscles or cartilaginous structures within the breast, so it relies on its fascial envelope and suspensory ligaments (remember ligaments - to some - are considered densified fascia) for integrity and support. The breast's skin surface, the areola, and the nipple are all richly supplied lymphatically.
