10 years ago today! My chunky 5 month old bubba 🩷 Thinking back to a decade ago - I always think if I knew as much as I do now about so many things. How different it would be? But then again I was just 22 and learning as I went along, and you were the most amazing little baby despite some health conditions we discovered along the way. From allergies to severe eczema. I was proud to get to 13 months of breastfeeding you! It was a huge achievement at the time. Slowly pull it through until you have a large sized ring that you can easily put onto the finger. 💜Put the ring sizer over the chosen finger and gently pull it tighter until you have the correct size. 💜The measured ring size to use is the one on the inside of the buckle of the ring sizer. 💜The correct size should allow the ring sizer to move over the knuckle without too much effort. 💜If the gauge on the ring sizer shows a point between two sizes, use the larger one. It is better that a ring is a fraction too big, than too small. 💜Measure your finger later in the day, and at a comfortable ambient temperature. Our fingers are thinner in the morning or when our hands are cold, which reduces the accuracy of the measurement. If in doubt, measure 3 or 4 times at different times of the day. 💜The ring sizer should be able to slip over the knuckle with relative ease after measurement. If it requires force, then the size is too small. If it falls off without any help at all, it is too large. 💜Getting the size right first time is important. 18 months of breastfeeding was achieved the other day and what better way to celebrate with a blocked duct making me feel poorly. Also a year of donating breastmilk, about 90,000 mil donated for neonatal babies. I’m proud of us. It’s not been without its challenges, tongue tie and numerous blocked ducts and bouts of mastitis but I wouldn’t change it for the world. My goal was always a year but I couldn’t have imagined stopping then. The WHO recommendation is at least 2 years. From 1-2 years babies still get 25% of their nutrition from breastmilk. The benefits of that are huge on the gut alone, forgetting all the benefits for mother. Here’s to the next 6 months. Have you been thinking about colostrum harvesting? For most it’s not recommended until 37 weeks. Hand expressing should not be painful and there are a few things you can do to help make collecting colostrum easier: - have a warm bath or shower - massage the side you’re going to express from, this should be fairly firm and starting against the chest/near the armpit and moving downwards towards the nipple. - set the scene! We know our oxytocin is higher when in lower lit, private spaces. Antenatal hand expressing should take anywhere up to 20 minutes once or twice a day. Liquid Gold! ✨️ This is my first bag of expressed breastmilk from my feeding journey with my little girl and I'm going to use some of this to create my own piece of breastmilk jewellery when I'm back in my workshop. There's no right or wrong breastmilk to use for making jewellery, it could be first milk, last milk, colostrum expressed antenatally, milk from a milestone like a birthday or just milk leftover from a bottle that baby didn't finish. Fresh or frozen (no matter how long for!) it's completely up to you and anything goes. I look forward to sharing the journey of this particular expressed milk becoming jewellery with you in the near future! 🤍
