Instead of searching for wanna-be heroes, look for people who aren’t afraid of a paintbrush. Share the need for drivers who will fuel the rig at 3:30 in the morning after running fire alarms all night. Find firefighters who will wash the engine when it’s 40 degrees, with a smile on their face, months away from retirement. These are the type of men and women the fire service needs! The best firefighters I have worked with understand the sacrifices and hard work of those who’ve come before us. They understand that cleaning tools, polishing rigs, and putting the team first makes everyone better. They understand the value of legacy. And I promise you, if you find these firefighters and treat them right, they’ll act heroic when the time comes— but they don’t consider themselves heroes. Because once they’re done doing what needed to be done, they’ll go right back to serving the public without expecting anything special. Because that is what the American Fire SERVICE is all about. 911 Kisspatch...err, I mean Dispatch. • Two years ago on this day, I walked into a career I had only dreamed of having. Two years ago on this day, I jumped headfirst into a whirlwind of excitement, exhaustion, adventure, sadness, hopefulness, fear and SO many more emotions all mixed into one. Over the past two years, I have taken a wide variety of calls. I've stayed on the line while a Wife weeps as she tells me her Husband is gone. I talk a teenager through CPR while they scream at me, because their friend OD'd and the ambulance is not getting there fast enough. I've reassured the Son who cries while he waits for EMS to arrive to pick up his Mother who has fallen for the fifth time today and he's unable to lift her and he's certain she now needs more care and assistance than he can provide for her at home. Two years in and with each shift there's moments I still feel nauseous. My stomache still drops. My hands still get sweaty. And my heart still beats extremely fast. But it reminds me, that I care. And that I'm human. This career has taught me just that; though there's so much pain and hurt and tragedy that I see flash across my screen and ring into my ears each and every shift; partnered with it is hope, compassion, love and helpfulness... Reminding me that we're all human. hu•man (adjective) -- relating to or characteristic of people or human beings. If I can relate to or provide even just an ounce of hope for each caller I speak with, then I feel I'm accomplishing what I set out to do when I first dove into this position. It's really quite fitting that my anniversary falls on Valentine's Day. And like I did on this day when I started two years ago, and still do to this day; I put my heart into every single shift.
