Too much or just not enough, Smells and Odours (Olfactory System) 👃 can be overwhelming and over stimulating, or just not enough, leaving someone wanting and seeking more. 🌼 Some of us with Autism are more likely to be highly sensitive to smells and odours, sometimes causing discomfort or distress. Experiencing and showing a stronger reaction to certain smells affects how we behave and feel and is closely tied to our emotions and memories. 🌼 It can affect how we engage in different environments while processing and trying to make sense of a situation, like entering an enclosed space, restaurant, or swimming pool, travelling on transport, or visiting family and friends. 🌼 We may show an increase in stimming (repetitive movement, sound, or action) when exposed to certain scents like perfumes, air fresheners, coffee, food, or bad breath. 🌼 Under responsive meaning hyposensitive, may not be aware of various smells/Odors in the environment and unable to determine good, bad, or dangerous smells. 🌼 Seeking and smelling everything and everyone enjoying stronger and sometimes unsafe smells, preferring foods with stronger smells. #sensory #speechtherapy #sensorystimulation #language #autism #speechtherapist #sensoryoverload #therapy #speechandlanguagetherapy #occupationaltherapy #occupationaltherapist #ot #physicaltherapy

I'm going to start and add some educational posts to my feed like this one. I hope you find them helpful, especially for people who aren't experienced with Autistic behaviours. Cole is definitely a number 5 in this instance. When we are at play centres, he gets that over excited with everything he can be known to hit other children in response to something. For example, the last time was because another child cried and he has never liked the high pitched crying sound, so he gave the other child a couple of taps on the head 🙈 as his way of saying "stop that noise". This isn't me saying that children with Autism cannot ever just hit because they are being naughty (like any child), but as Cole also lacks the understanding of a LOT of things / situations, it's so hard for him to understand what he has done wrong. These impulses are usually in response to something that only he will understand. Hence our run ins with other parents at these play centres and me creating the educational posters! Do any of these apply to your Autistic child? #autism #sensory #sensoryoverload #playcentre #sen #asd #child #mum

Prolonged periods of masking or sensory overstimulation can be overwhelming for an Autistic individual, and can all lead to what is known as Autistic Burnout. Autistic Burnout is different from regular burnout in that traits like sensory processing issues or executive dysfunction become more amplified, they may struggle to communicate at all, it can take much longer to recover (some Autistics have taken months or even years to recover from a burnout episode), and it can have a big impact on being able to work or do basic things like house chores, keep up with friends, hobbies/special interests etc. This is actually something I’ve not known about until recent years, so I’ve probably experienced it without knowing what it was, but I do often get tired out easily by things like being at work, socialising, or going out and about, and my traits double when I’m worn out. I spend a lot of time in my room which I need as it helps me regulate, and might be why I haven’t had an intense burnoutI have somewhere safe to go when I’m exhausted. If you know someone who is Autistic and is going through burnout or is prone to it, offer your support! Talk to them about it, and ask how you can help! They may need it more than you know. #autism #autisticburnout #burnout #sensoryoverload #autisticburnoutawareness #neurodiversity #autisticlife #ink #penandink #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autismacceptancemonth #autismawarenessmonth #neurodiversity #autism #actuallyautistic #autisticartist #drawing #sketch #illustration #autisticart

Recently on my story I have been asking a few different questions regarding flying with your service dog for the first time! I am the autistic that researches EVERYTHING… down to printing out pet relief area maps, looking at 3D tours of the airport… etc. This is usually what helps ease a LOT of my anxiety. Guess what, it is my first time flying, too!! Well, since I was like, 2 years old… So, clearly, @southwestair is the top pick among most service dog teams. The ONLY thing I didn’t like, was that my flight would not be nonstop — it would be a connecting flight in another city, which is not necessary since my flight is only 4 hours away. I believe they do this to cut down costs, which is nice, but being autistic, I want to cut down as much having to do new things as possible. So I believe we will be flying @united which also had very positive mentions! I really like all that I have read about their accessibility and accommodations. I plan on going over a lot more of our first flying experience, and the process of it all. Are there any specific questions you have, or things you want to see me cover? 💞 ✧ ✧ —> Use our code “SALEM10” for 10% off at Misty’s Dog Gear 🤍 ✧ ✧ #ServiceDog #ServicePoodle #CardiacAlertDog #DogTraining #ServiceDogHandler #ServiceDogTeam #AutismAssistanceDog #StandardPoodlesOfInstagram #ServiceDogsOfInstagram #SensoryOverload #BalancedTraining #AutisticAdult #AutismAcceptance #RedInstead #WorkingDog #MedicalAlertDog #PoodlePuppy #StandardPoodle #PoodlesOfInstagram #AutismAcceptance #AutismServiceDog #ServiceDoginTraining #SDIT #ServiceDogTasks #BrownStandardPoodle #ServiceDogAirplane #ServiceDogTravel #FlyingServiceDog #DogTravel #FirstFlight #DogFlight

I'm working on these at the moment. I'm just trying to take a set of ideas through to completion as I have too many unfinished bits about currently. I just can't settle to anything very often and struggle to sit still. These are about feeling overwhelmed, and how although you know there is a positive or a beauty in any given moment, sometimes, it's just too much, too sensory, and you simply can't bear to access it. #sensory #toomuch #alltoomuch #senses #overstimulated #overwhelmed #overwhelming #sensoryoverload #anxiety #anxietyanddepression #mentalhealth #selfhealing #selfhelp #selfawareness #processingthoughts #selfcare #makingthebestofit #makingpeacewithmyself #drawing #mixedmedia #mixedmediaartist #rooks #corvids

Some personal work on the subject of the trauma and general overwhelm of growing up living with a parent with a hoarding disorder, the lack of agency over my own space then and the difficulty of managing my space now I've my own (well not really my own, I am renting ofcourse..) and the autistic sensory overwhelm and shut down and melt down feelings bristling when I notice an area that's gotten out of hand.. I am so small and so big all at once. This isn't a cry for help or anything, I'm in therapy and doing honestly better than I have been doing for a while rn, it's in that I've found my creativity again to make this work, and I am so proud of it ❤️ #hoardingdisorder #hoarding #hoardingrecovery #hoardingtrauma #hoarderparent #childofahoarder #autisticstruggles #trauma #traumarecovery #innerchildwork #overwhelm #shutdown #sensoryoverload

I’m learning to simplify my life ✨ 80% Food. 20% Exercise.. Right? I cannot tell you the amount of grapes I've brought then thrown away. It's something about the 'Pop' when you bite into them that mades me wanna gag, especially with red grapes 😂 It's clearly a textural/sensory thing (Eye opening!). But I love the taste (The candy floss ones 🤤), so I persisted and found that by cutting them in half I really enjoy them 😋 Isn’t it funny how we spend our lives doing these little things that make us so uncomfortable? They all add up to making the bigger picture unbearable at times 🤔 I’m finding I prefer most foods cut into smaller pieces. So here’s to figuring out what makes ME comfortable, however big or small 💜 • Scrambled Eggs - salt, pepper, chives, parsley, chilli flakes • Handful of Chopped Red Grapes • Chopped Cucumber • Dairy Free Greek Yogurt • Salted Caramel Peanut Butter - 1 Tsp • Chocolate Dusting Oh! And paper plates + plastic cutlery! 🤘🏼JOOHOO KIA🤘🏼 . . . Went to JB, watched some bodybuilding, met some friends, ate some food but my best moments this weekend hands down, were spent with these 4 riff raffs - @ralphaeljared @firascobra @sh3ikho @zuhraa ♥️ . . . So I got visually assaulted with all of the “inspired” branded merchandise, flashy tech accessory stalls and was completely overwhelmed with the crowd - seems like the whole of JB converges into KSL Mall on a Sunday (I could be wrong, it could be every day!) but still, I had a good time. I may have grown up in Malaysia but JB is way out of my depth and I quickly realised that the only way to navigate this landscape was to just go with the flow, for example, run across the road without thinking twice cos if you don’t “anyhow” and “go jer”, you will never get there. Will definitely do it again but only if I get to go with this lot! 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼 . . . #ghetto #sensoryoverload #technobeng #nevertoooldtoyolo

🧠 Sensory overload & overstimulation: If you watch an ad, someone gets paid. There are massive companies fighting for your attention every day. And they’re winning. Why is clickbait so powerful, for example? It is because of a phenomenon known as ‘supernormal stimuli’. The term was coined by Dutch biologist Niko Tinbergen. His research showed something mind-boggling. Our primitive brains follow stimuli. We do things that make us feel good. #TimFerris #SensoryOverload #Overstimulation #ModernSociety #APlaceInSpace

Is there a better way to spend childhood than being home educated? I really don’t think so… . Here is my thoughts: . Home education gives children the best chance at being their individual selves & embracing all that they are (as I wrote about in my last post), it holds space for individuality which I believe is so important in childhood for future mental wellbeing. . Home education strengthens relationships in the family home, usually puts connections above everything. . Home education allows time for so much more living! . Home education is flexible to suit children’s priorities and interests and abilities/needs. . Home education sees the value in childhood and doesn’t rush children being children. . Home education can be anything you want and need it to be. . Home education can bring authentic true friendships where children don’t feel the need to change or shrink themselves. . Home education can be the catalyst of cycle breaking and bring change to a whole new generation of children. . Home education…it’s so much more than just learning in a different way/place to school, it’s restoring childhood in my eyes. . 63/100 #100homeeddays #100dayshomeeducation #unschoolersofinstagram #homeeducation #unschoolingstanley #homeschoolcollective #homeeducator #unschoolingfamily #worldschooling #lifelearning #selftaught #childledlearning #interestled #autonomouseducation #pda #pesistentdriveforautonomy #actuallyautistic #pdaprofile #pdaautism #asd #spd #dyselxia #sensoryprocessing #sensoryregulation #coregulation #sensoryoverload #neurodivergentfamily #neurodivergence #unschool #unschoolers

I'm feeling so defeated lately.  Many of the events in my life over the past few weeks have left me pretty speechless.  Both literally and figuratively.  I've been struggling to write or to put my thoughts down on paper. I'm completely drained.  My tank is empty.  I'm in sensory overload. Everything feels too much. Leaving me unable to control my emotions. But, I'm still trying my best to take care of me. As a kid I loved reading "Choose Your Own Adventure" stories (which for anyone who grew up in the 80's knows exactly what I'm talking about).  But my life is not so simple. None of our lives are.  I'm sure for those of us who loved reading this book series, we can collectively admit that we often cheated our way through them, flipping to the back pages, ensuring we made sensible choices that would not lead us to taking the wrong path, a path that would lead toward heartache, bad decisions, irreparable consequences or even death.  Life is full of so many twists and turns and ups and downs. Thinking about these books today is reminding me that I can't go back in time, I can not change my past, but the good thing about these books, as it pertains to life itself is they always left the protagonist (which is you) in charge of their own destiny, giving them endless possibilities, alternative choices and new direction. Many of my past attempts at life, past traumas and past failures have all led me to a path I never would have chosen, a path I never cheated to get down, but,  nonetheless, it's a path that has led me toward endless possibilities, alternative choices and a new direction for which I am truly grateful for.  Who still has their collection of "Choose Your Own Adventure" books? #choseyourownadventures #series #mentalhealth #direction #possibilities #choice #depressionisnotachoice #depression #anxiety #defeat #toomuch #writewhatyouknow #sensoryoverload #passion #purpose #writing #blogger #author

It's important to remember that progress is not always linear, and setbacks are a natural part of learning and growing. Why Patience Matters: For individuals with sensory sensitivities, every day can bring new challenges and experiences. Adjusting to sensory-friendly strategies or learning to manage sensory overload takes time and practice. As caregivers, friends, or family members, your patience is a key support that makes this journey smoother. Expect Fluctuations: Some days will be better than others, and that’s okay! Celebrating the small victories can encourage continued effort and adaptation. On tougher days, understanding and support are more crucial than ever. Supporting Each Other: Let’s cultivate a community where setbacks are seen as opportunities for growth and learning. Share your stories, your struggles, and your triumphs. Your experiences can light the way for others on similar paths. Whether you are a parent, educator, or friend, your patience and encouragement can make a significant impact. - - - - #sensoryhealthcoach #sensoryprocessing #sensoryseeking #sensoryoverload #christianot #sensoryprocessingdisorderparentsupport #christianspecialneeds #kidstherapy christianspecialneedsfamilies #sensory #explore #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryissues #occupationaltherapist #occupationaltherapy

This question makes me feel...a little sad? Because when’s the last time I made myself feel like the most important person in the room? This question is a check-in: Am I pouring my energy into making others feel heard and seen, while neglecting my own needs? What would it feel like to give MYSELF that deep attention? To treat myself with the care and focus I often wish I received from others? Affirm: “It’s okay to shift my focus inwards for a while. FAMILY DAY OUT We thought we would surprise T in taking him to Marvel Universe Live! T being the super hero loving child was eager and ready to go! The initial impact was amazing, he was so excited to see his favourite super hero’s on stage, however quickly took a turn when the loud noises and sensory overload kicked in! Thankfully his super hero dad took a mad dash to Bunnings to grab him some sound cancelling headphones so that he could watch the second half of the show! I’m not sure if or when he will be ready to part with his new accessory! However glad that we can make accomodations for his needs so that he doesn’t have to miss out on experiences like this one! Anyone else’s child struggle with loud noises? How do you support your child when they are struggling with their surroundings? #lifestyle #parenting #parentingtoddlers #familydayout #sensoryoverload #bebetter #dobetter #makingspace

Motherhood can be hard. It’s packed with unrealistic expectations, social pressures, and SO much stress. One of the hardest parts of being a mom for me is overstimulation. If you find yourself feeling triggered or overwhelmed by the noise, mess, touch, or chaos of motherhood, your body might be saying that you need a break. When our bodies receive too many sensory inputs, our nervous system gets overloaded, leading to overstimulation. Managing overstimulation comes with an invisible load that includes: 〰 Recognizing signs of overstimulation 〰 Regulating emotions and reactions in the moment 〰 Planning for sensory breaks 〰 Researching the tools you need 〰 Developing healthy coping skills 〰 Managing both personal and child’s needs 〰 Identifying triggers 〰 Managing internal dialogue 〰 Planning ahead to prevent (when possible) 〰 Managing the environment (when possible) 〰 Trying to explain your experience to others 〰 Processing the mom guilt It’s a lot to deal with! Fortunately, we can learn the tools to control the way we react to overstimulation. Our maternal mental health specialists are here to help! We offer virtual therapy support for moms across Canada and the United States, serving you at every step of your journey. Our mom therapists understand what you’re going through. They can help with: 〰 Recognizing overstimulation in your body 〰 Creating a plan for in and out of the moment management 〰 Learning to make small adjustments to the environment to reduce overstimulation 〰 Recognizing and advocating for your needs 〰 Mom Rage and irritability 〰 And more! Find out if we serve your area and book a FREE 15 minute virtual consultation. ADHD & Resting: Sensory Input ME, autism and ADHD all come with sensory sensitivities. So to rest properly, you need to reduce sensory input! But then there’s also the risk of getting understimulated—which may sound like no big deal if you’re unfamiliar with it, but actually feels very intense, like your whole body is screaming with the need to just Do Something. A good way to go about creating a good sensory environment to rest in is to first take away as many sources of sensory input as possible, then add ones that are comfortable for you. An example, Elias’ perfect restful environment: closing the curtains and putting on a sleep mask to block out light, putting on noise canceling headphones to block unwanted sounds and add comforting music, wearing soft clothes like pyjamas and lying under a weighted blanket. Miki doesn’t need to block out as much, just a constant and calm environment is usually enough; he has more trouble ‘coming down’ to a restful state. We’ll talk about that in the next post! Btw the sleep mask in this picture is cute, but it doesn’t actually block a lot of light 😅 Any tips for better ones or ways to improve this one would be appreciated. [Image description: A portrait selfie of Elias lying in bed wearing a sleep mask over their eyes and black over-ear headphones. The mask is white and fuzzy and has the black eyes and nose of Nijntje (Miffy) embroidered on it. Elias’ left hand is hovering by the mask as if they just adjusted it. Elias is a white nonbinary person with long-ish curly brown hair. They’re wearing a forest green button-up with a white plant print and lying on a grey pillow with thin white stripes.] #Spoonie #SpoonieLife #MECFS #Neurodivergent #ADHD #AuDHD #Autistic #SensoryOverload #SensoryDifficulties #Disabled #DisabledLife

Good luck to everyone who’s family members find firework’s extremely distressing. We struggle every year… in fact- Charlotte has asked if we can just go on holiday abroad for the whole month of November 🤪 She is currently lying in between mam and dad with noise cancelling headphones and her iPad desperately trying to take her mind off the bangs. Please bear us in mind if you live near and are thinking about having a noisy display in your garden. Silent, organised, displays are definitely the way forward. Or please buy the lovely quiet ones 🤫 Stay safe peeps 💕 #asd #autism #autismawareness #bonfire #sensoryoverload #neurodivergent #overstimulated #scaredoffireworks #longnightahead 🥴

Sensory overload (or overwhelm) is a common feature of both ADHD and autism. Sensory overwhelm occurs when there is too much sensory information flooding the brain for it to process. How much is too much depends on the individual and the situation. A person’s tolerance threshold may fluctuate depending on what else is going on in their life. What many people don’t realize is that sensory overload can cause true, physical pain. If this sounds like something that impacts you or a loved one, know that you aren’t alone! Children who have Sensory Processing Disorder usually fall into two categories, a seeker or an avoider. Most people think that you have to be one or the other but you can actually be an avoider and a seeker too. It's more common to be both than one or the other. A sensory seeker is hyposensitive and an avoider is hypersensitive. A child with Sensory Processing that is an avoider will become overstimulated because they are sensitive to what is around them and will feel everything much more intense then others. Sensory avoiders will avoid sensory input. Hypersensitive means that you are more sensitive (over-responsive) to input than others. This may look like covering your ears when a vacuum is turned on because it is too loud. Or struggling with the feeling of your clothing, even to the point of not being able to wear clothes. At times we refer to people that are hypersensitive as avoiders, they want to avoid certain types of input because they are more sensitive to them. Hyposensitive means that you are less sensitive (under-responsive) to input than others. Meaning you may want and crave more input to feel regulated and fulfilled. This may look like constantly moving, spinning, jumping, or playing rough with others. At times we refer to people that are hyposensitive as seekers. #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensoryprocessing #sensoryavoiderandseeker #hyposensitive #sensoryintegrationdisorder #sensorymeltdowns #sensoryavoiders #overstimulated #sensoryprocessingdifficulties #sensoryintegration #sensoryseeker #sensoryseekers #sensoryavoider #anxiety #sensoryoverload #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorysymptoms #sensoryprocessingdifferences
