I'm in a ton of local Facebook groups to advertise about the farm. It's quite common to see posts about farmland being sold. It's always the same..."Why are all the farmers selling? It's just going to be another subdivision. Why don't the kids take over?" I'll tell you why, because people, as a whole community, don't support the farmers. I have wonderful customers that visit me at the farmers market every Saturday, year round. We love and appreciate you. But as the saying goes, it takes a village. I make daily posts about what we're growing, when we're delivering, where to buy, etc. All that takes time and where has that gotten me? I still have about as many plants as I had a month ago. I have brought home more veggies than I've sold at the farmers market, and as one of the only farmers with fresh vegetables this time of year, that's unheard of. With the hefty price increases at the grocery store, farmers markets are actually more economical than grocery stores on many products. We take Snap, Wic, produce perks, etc. I've priced out plants at Lowes and other garden centers, and we're competitive there also. There is literally no reason not to buy from a local farmer except "convenience". I don't post this to shame anyone. People are busy, I get it. But hopefully when you get in your car to drive to Lowes or Kroger this weekend to get mom a hanging basket, you head over to a local farm and find her something there instead. I guarantee you they'll appreciate that sale more than the big corporations. When you're there, take a look around and see what else they have available.
