Rocky Mountain Record Show find 4/9 This is my first step into #BYGActuelRecords. I’d imagine you’re familiar if reading, but if not they are a French label that specialized in free jazz. Many of the musicians that were recorded were living in Europe full time after moving away from the US. Coursil, in contrast, was born in France. He moved to Africa for three years and briefly back to France again before settling in New York and joining the free jazz scene. He recorded this record on a visit back to France. The word to sum this one up is sparse. The four musicians give each other copious amounts of space, letting the listener zoom in on their interaction. It’s quite amazing how they play off each other. Coursil’s trumpet technique is outstanding. My new copy is a new re-issue BYG/Charly records and the recent pressing they have been doing are top notch. My other/old copy is a poor quality pressing from Rainbo Records which I have no idea when that was pressed or reissued. I will be selling that for cheap in the near future. The OG copy of this was a French only released on BYG Records as part of the Actuel series. The Art Ensemble Of Chicago was based out of Paris at the time and recorded three albums for BYG. This recording is pre Don Moye joining the ensemble, so they were a quartet with Roscoe Mitchell, Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman and Mamachi Favors.
