Mississippi Speed Record Production - May 16th. We got our first night of sleep in a real bed since the trip started at Judson Steinback's house. Having a home to spread out gear, import footage, and charge batteries was a big relief! Next, we see a barge leaving the lock, and then the paddlers entering. THE SWEET SPOT 🧡💙 As a Nutritionist, I get many many questions about 'is this ok?' or 'should I do being that?' or 'I heard that this is..?' - and I get it, its much easier when something is binary - that makes it much easier to understand and follow. Unfortunately, this is not always (and mostly not) the case - and I always answer with 'It depends'. And this is what influencers and people without true knowledge of nutrition really don't understand. IT DEPENDS ON YOUR UNIQUE CIRCUMSTANCES - You need to work at it to find your own personal sweet spot. BUT - there are two core principles which I PROMISE you, will make it easier for you to find yours: 1️⃣: You must prioritise your CORE HEALTH first and foremost. Eating whole foods which give your body the various nutrients you need to get your base at the most optimised level possible 2️⃣: Find the FUELLING STRATEGY that works for you - trial, test and practice this regularly. Don't wing it or just copy someone else. You must figure out your personal sweet spot. If you don't have enough energy to support your output, your body will find a way to adapt. Your body will reduce or eliminate ovulation, reduce menstruation because you didn't have the energy to support pregnancy. HITTING THE WALL IN YOUR TRAINING? 😮‍💨🪫 From a nutrition POV, this is often down to one or a combination of these 3 things: ❌ Fasted training ❌ Using coffee to give you “energy” ❌ Opting for the wrong type of carbs pre workout If performance is your goal and you want to get fitter, faster and stronger then fuelling your training sessions appropriately is key 🚀⛽️ When encouraging people to utilise more “processed” carbs for fuelling performance, it’s often met with some resistance 😵‍💫 but this is where context is key and where sports nutrition differs from standard healthy eating principles. Time for a long run! Normally I’d be upset at this pace, but one of my goals is to ramp up my training *safely.* I haven’t run consistently in the heat in YEARS so I focused on keeping a steady pace, staying hydrated, and keeping track of my heart rate. And it worked! I was drenched it sweat by the end but I didn’t feel awful. This week’s featured athlete is Katie Kozlowski! What motivated you to get into endurance sports? Quarter life crisis? Haha. I was just looking for a new challenge and this one kind of stuck. I like that it’s a constantly evolving goal, you can always move numbers to new ones. What are your goals for 2024? If feasible, sub 6:30 on my next half. I set a 7:00 goal on my last and really kept my training up and I was able to get there. I believe with enough hard work and potentially less sweltering conditions What three words best describe you? Hardworking, Sarcastic, and Loyal What is your preferred training and race fuel? I like Cliff shot blocks for the bike. I don’t mind the sponsored Maurten for the run. It’s easy to consume and tastes good...the gels that is...the liquids are gross and I throw them up all the time (if there was a fourth word for the previous question it would be over-sharer, sorry) What is your go-to post-training or post-race food? Depends how I’m feeling but usually a burger haha, maybe some pasta again What is one song that gets you through a hard training ride or run? I listen to a podcast called Morbid (cause well, I am a little morbid) but if I had to pick one...I’m going to pick two “Shut Up and Dance with Me” by Walk the Moon and “Dancing on My Own” by Robyn specifically (this was on during my T1 for my full Ironman and it was amazing and I love it so much. What is something that makes you feel unstoppable? Hitting my training on a consistent basis Where is your dream or ideal race location? As of right now I have my sights set on The Woodlands race in Texas. However, I just saw Las Vegas put out interest in a 70.3 distance race.

It's an important question. Spoiler alert. The answer is no. Similar to the speed question (you're only legit if you're x speed), the distance question hangs out there just as prominently - volume and distance somehow legitimize someone as being a runner. The term bada$$ is reserved only for the extremes or an arbitrary distance (or speed)? The distance topic always reminds us of the argument of what is the ‘hardest’ sport or who is the best athlete? Is a triathlon harder than the 800 meters on the track? Is an ultrarunner a better athlete than a powerlifter? These questions are incredibly ridiculous because they cannot be answered. It is completely subjective based on what someone believes to be the most important factor. For example, if endurance is one’s benchmark for what a ‘real’ athlete is, then sure, an ultrarunner is a better athlete than a powerlifter. However, if strength and power is one’s benchmark… sorry ultrarunners, you’re not real athletes. See the absurdity? Let's carve this down to a few basic truths: ▶️ if you run, you’re a runner ▶️ distance has no bearing on whether or not you’re a bada$$ ▶️ how far you run or race isn't a matter of one distance being harder than the other, it’s just different ▶️ finishing a race qualifies you for ‘bragging rights,’ regardless of the distance Long, short, fast, not so fast. VERY excited to have been working through the first few episodes of my new podcast, ready for release soon. I'll leave a few surprise guests, but I've had an absolutely fab time talking to the likes of @andrewmillercoaching and the lovely Jazmine Lowther. I've always half-arsed the running blog, with motivation spurts then quickly waning as my mind became full of university, socials and then having my first full time job as an engineer. I've also always put this off because I've been lacking in confidence. I've felt like I'm not enough of a runner, or a good enough athlete to have a go at doing something related to the sport. Health issues and life have managed to get in the way sometimes, but I've finally had the realization at 26 that who gives a crap. I spend my time reading running autobiographies, persuading my friends to like running and planning my weekends around what exercise my body can currently handle. I am a fan of the sport. You don't need to be at the top of it to share it! I honestly have loved everyone I've ever interviewed and I've even met some friends through it. So sod it. I won't make promises that I can't keep, but I'm excited to have my enthusiasm back and to be having great conversations with people I admire. The fact that I'm enjoying anything after a while of feeling *meh* is a win honestly. I decided that writing them up was time consuming and not very accessible, hence the new podcast and YouTube format. I'll admit, this is mostly for my benefit, I simply enjoy speaking to them. Training Tip Tuesday - Recovery Remember to add recovery to your training. Gains are not made when we are training, they are made after we, when we recover. Constant stress on the body will yield little improvement and often leads to injury. So make sure you eat enough, sleep 7+ hours and make the easy days easy (or take a day completely off). April 15-22 recap⏮️ Last week was a good time, I was pretty sick for 3 days, think it’s lack of sleep/stress. I had a really great long bike ride mid week, a couple good interval runs and the first 5k race I’ve run in 2+ years!!
