Howgills Trail Marathon. Finish line smiles & tears of relief/achievement/happiness 🥲 Long post incoming, but I think it's important to share this.... My friend repeatedly told me to leave her on this marathon, really anxious that we wouldn't make the checkpoint cut off times. Pure stubbornness and determination got us through with one minute to spare 💪🏻 My friend had a tough day on the trails. It happens. She is an experienced marathon and trail runner, but Howgills really tested her. As we all know, the running community as a whole is a supportive place. But we had a bad experience on this marathon. The first couple of miles were on quite narrow paths, with a drop to the side. The half marathon runners set off just 15 minutes behind us which inevitably meant they had to pass those of us marathoners who aren't front of the pack. Of course this is tricky on the narrow paths. (Personally I think there should have been a bigger gap between start times.) Anyway, some accidental bumping of elbows is understandable as people pass. We were single file and moved aside as best we could, and the majority of the faster half marathoners either went round when they could, or said excuse me. Absolutely fine. Until one female runner in pink shorts. She actually pushed my friend aside which really rattled her on such a narrow path. Then Pink Shorts said in earshot, just in front of me, "she shouldn't be in the race". Yes, "she shouldn't be in the race". Because my friend was in her way? Because we were slower than her? Because it might have cost her a few precious seconds to say "excuse me" and allow my friend to step aside? Completely unacceptable. We deserved to be there as much as anyone else. Sadly this got in my friend's head, and it was a huge mental battle for the next 24+ miles. This became part of my mantra for her- we would not prove Pink Shorts right. We were going to complete the marathon, get those medals and prove to ourselves, as much as anyone else, that we could do it. This kind of attitude that events are only for faster runners is not ok! Kindness, manners & consideration cost nothing. And if you can't say anything nice, say nothing.
A great evening out with the gang. Good to be out with these boys on a warm sunny evening for our TNC run. Slight detour taken on route to try and avoid the annoying flies around the lake but other than that all good and a great pace done while chatting. A good chance to catch up with everyone and just under 8 miles done to kickstart the week. Intervals in windy conditions are NOT as fun 😫💨 One thing I’ve made certain of is to include a variation of different runs and sessions every week to continue to mix up my training and really found this to be beneficial for me! 💪 Todays session was split into two halves: 1st Half with @amyrosannaruns : 1 mile warm up 4 x 1 mile @ Sub 1:30 (6:46) / 0.5 mile recovery 2nd Half was very similar but done Solo: 4 x 1 Mile @ Sub 2:40 (6:05) / 0.5 Mile Recovery 1 Mile cool down Even battling the conditions the entire time, all of the efforts were at a very consistent pace which is even more rewarding when you feel you’ve worked twice as hard! One of the many many reasons why I love running 🫶⬆️📸🏃🏽♀️ This community is awesome. When a call goes out for help or support on a running challenge, I’ve seen time and time again that this community shows up. And the beauty of it is, most people only know the person doing the challenge, and even then that might be only from social media. They come on their own, just trying to help and in doing so end up meeting so many strangers who’ve all come together for a common cause and who, over the course of 5,10,20km quickly become friends too. When people ask what I’m training for, a lot of the times recently my answer has been “to be fit enough to say yes” and this is exactly the kind of occasion I’m thinking of when I say that. The type where you only have a few days notice (if that 😅) to join a run, head out on a hike or go on an adventure, and you know that if you’ve kept fit enough you can say yes and it’s probably going to be epic. In less than a week both my aunt and a former teammate of mine unexpectedly passed away. This week has been emotionally hard, but I was fortunate to have wonderful friends and family by my side. Yesterday I was able to run with Ang in her first ever 10 mile race! It was so fun and exciting to see all her hard work pay off. They announced before the race that the oldest person in the race was named Francis and Ang and I looked at each other and knew our former teammate Frank was right there with us. ❤️🤍🖤 My running calendars quote of the day today was IT’S FINE. I’M FINE. Everything’s FINE. Running ONE MILE AT A TIME Which was fitting for how the week went and since my aunts funeral was today. Yet ANOTHER magnificent medal Monday for THH 😍💙❤️ For the 4th weekend in succession, it was another epic few days for the club with some outstanding performances once again! 🤩 The big news came from Newport where we had members taking part in all 3 events 🙌 Sam Jenkins, @tmpenhorwood & @russbailey27 all SMASHED the marathon in exceptional times 💥 We then had more athletes in the half marathon and 10k events, including multiple PB’s 🛎️ and a 7th place finish for our very own @mikerod_therunner 🔥 @lilyann.peace donned a tutu and halo as she dressed up raising money for @latchwales dancing her way round the course 👏 @gar_evans23 was also racing again, this time doing the Red Kite 1/2 marathon and he did amazingly well consider there was over 800m of elevation 🤯💪 Saturday was also a great day too, with a group of the club members heading up to Ystalyfera for the new @parkrunuk 😁 along with another good group heading down to Swansea where @niccijamm celebrated her 💯 Parkrun 🥳 April has really been a pretty spectacular month for THH, so many phenomenal performances that everyone really should be super proud of! 🙌 #medalmonday #magnificentmonday #trihardharriers #trihardandsucceed #THH #thebestclub #supporteachother #runningclub #runningfamily #runningfriends #dreamteam #squadgoals #runnersofinstagram #runninginspiration #runningmotivation #runningcommunity #simplythebest #parkrun #runners #inspirational

Half marathon #17 was just the reset I needed. With my last marathon, I had trained for months and months and then for the race to go not as planned was devastating and it burnt me out. After it, I dropped my mileage and just focused on finding my love for running again. Initially, I was apprehensive about this race. It was my first since October and I looked at the course map last minute and realized it was damn hilly. But when I say that @tcma_events are magic, I mean it. TCMA races are the ones I’ve hit every distance PR. They’re where I’ve found my running friends. And they’re where I found my love for running and races. It’s why I’ve wanted to represent them for the last 3 years to spread that magic to others. Yesterday’s race was no different. 13.1 miles flew in a blink of an eye and I ran it with some wonderful friends. The hills were tough but the views were breathtaking (quite literally on the Narrows Bridge).
