Another first for the Cape mountain zebra genetic rescue project ๐ฆ We are excited to share the news that a second foal has been born at Sanbona (the first in January of this year), from the Cape mountain zebra stallion known as GB42. The foals were born at Sanbona Wildlife Reserve as part of a genetic rescue project, developed by CapeNature and Sanbona. The aim is to restore the lost genetic diversity of the Cape mountain zebra by mixing genetic stocks that were artificially isolated from each other decades ago, namely the Cradock (C), Kammanasie (K) and Gamkaberg (G) stocks. Each Cape mountain zebra has a unique stripe pattern, and CapeNature along with Sanbona, maintain zebra photo-identification kits and studbooks, making it possible to identify individuals and track their history. Teeming with life. The recent downpoar in Garden Route changed the flow of the Goukamma river in the lagoon, exposing these mounds presumably home to crustaceans. Sad for these creatures that need to move home or renovate, but quite sure they're going to be fine. So inspiring to see such a healthy ecosystem. As we traversed the rugged, uneven dirt road, drawing nearer to the majestic Langeberg mountains, the familiar blue signage of Capenatue indicated a mere 6 kilometres remaining, instilling within us a sense of anticipation to once again immerse ourselves amidst the Champion Redwoods of the Grootvadersbosch Nature Reserve. Its recent designation as a World Heritage Site is noteworthy. The vast mountains were veiled by thick mist, accompanied by a gentle drizzle and a palpable chill in the air. Upon passing through the inviting entrance gates of the reserve, the fragrance of the forest enveloped us. We had reserved a tented deck in the Glamping section a year prior, and owing to the burgeoning popularity of this recent addition to Capenatureโs offerings at Grootvadersbosch, we eagerly retrieved our keys from reception. Next in our Endangered Species series brings it back home, with the birth of a unique zebra foal at Sanbona Private Game Reserve. Hunting and habitat destruction has been the leading cause in the decline of ๐๐ฒ๐ถ๐ถ๐ด ๐ป๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ณ๐ข ๐ป๐ฆ๐ฃ๐ณ๐ข numbers. This lead to three small isolated populations (Cradock, Kammanassie and Gamkaberg), who grew genetically distinct from each other, however through amazing conservation efforts all but one was removed from the IUCN Red List! Until recently, Gamkaberg Nature Reserve, near Calitzdorp, was the only place in the world where zebra of the remaining population occurred, sadly due to small numbers, inbreeding was a real concern. Thus, @capenature and @sanbonasafari in the Western Cape developed a plan in consultation with @sanbi_za (South African Biodiversity Institute) and the University of Venda. In 2021 three stallions were translocated from Gamkaberg to Sanbona along with a group of Sanbona mares from Craddock and Kammanassie stock. Then came the miracle offspring! The foal is the only Cape mountain zebra in the world which contains both Cradock and Gamkaberg genes. The long term plan is to eventually combine all three genetic stocks and help restore the genetic diversity that was lost to the species many years ago. Giving hope that a little bit of outside the box thinking could lead to extraordinary results. On recommendation from a friend we decided to visit the Gamkaberg Nature Reserve near Outshoorn, a perfect stopover from Route 62. We were suprised from the first minute on arrival. What a welcome from the manager on duty handing us out a brochure and giving us detailed information about the reserve. Excited to #explore the reserve we took the #4x4 trail up to the mountain. It was a steep ascent to reach the top. On the plateau we found an amazing biodiversity of plants and flowers we didn't expect in this semi arid environment. Next day we opted for a hike through the gorge to get a different perspective of this amazing wilderness. The Bosjes Hiking Trail ~ November 2022. Bosjes is a working farm between Worcester and Wolseley that offers plenty of things, though we were interested in their hiking trail! They ask a minimum fee, give you a code to enter a reservation area behind the farm buildings and off you go! Immediately you feel like youโve entered somewhat of a game reserve as you see ostriches and antelope in the distance with the Waaihoek mountain range in the backdrop. If you are an animal lover and love the idea of walking on marked paths where you can view many different African antelope, then this hike is for you. We encountered plenty of animals and the hiking trail offers hides where you can watch these animals undisturbed. Unfortunately the trail does not seem to have much more to offer. There was a dam, but other than that no swimspots or landmarks that we are aware of. I donโt think itโs fair to rate the hiking trail as it seems to have rather been established for game drives and mountain biking. The trail did not go far towards (and not up) the mountain. [NLโฌ๏ธ] The Robberg Nature Reserve seems just a tiny dot on the map. And still, this is one of the prettiest spots for hiking along the ragged coastline of South Africa's Garden Route. The hiking trails on this unqiue peninsula will lead you along and over steep rock faces, now and then with a view down to the sea lion colony basking in the sun, gliding through the water or bickering for the best spot. You can hike here on trails that form three loops across the nature reserve, or combine these to round the peninsula. The landscape is surprisingly diverse. An immense sand dune makes up the heart of the peninsula. While the longer trails will have you scrambling over and around huge rock bolders. This place is definitely recommended if you like hiking and nature! . Robberg Nature Reserve lijkt maar een klein stukje natuur als je op de kaart kijkt. En toch is dit op de Zuid-Afrikaanse Garden Route een van de mooiste plekjes om langs de ruige kustlijn door de natuur te wandelen. De wandelpaden op dit unieke schiereiland leiden je langs en over steile rotswanden, hier en daar zelfs met uitzicht op de zeeleeuwen die aan de voet van de kliffen liggen te zonnen, het water in duiken en ruzie maken over het beste plekje. Je kan kiezen tussen drie wandelingen door het natuurreservaat, of ze allemaal doen en zo het hele schiereiland rond lopen. This warning comes after a female hiker suffering heat stroke, required medical assistance on Monday 25 March.The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), the emergency services and Cape Nature are urgently appealing to day walkers and hikers, who may be planning to hike the Plettenberg Bay Robberg Nature Reserve hiking trail, to be fully prepared for a grueling hike that too often catches hikers and day walkers off guard. According to Ross Badenhorst, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty coxswain, there has been a significant increase in emergency response incidents along this hiking trail that has raised concerns. When you kayak from the Umshanti campsite you have the option to go on land at several spots along the Buffelsjag dam and river. One of the options is what @christianvancoillie believes is the Jacobskloof trail. Iโm not sure if this is an official trail, though we reached a point of the Buffelsjag river where we could no longer kayak; the water was too shallow. Returning repeatedly to a location and composition one knows well but where you have yet to capture a proper image can have its rewards. Despite diving-bombing and screeching seagulls, a tripod and camera perched precariously on a rocky outcrop and knowing that my subject would soon be plunged into darkness, I was presented with the most spectacular blue hour light. A wild sea and huge swells smashing into this outcrop of rocks begged for a long exposure.
