Victor Brauner (1903 – 1966) was a Romanian painter and sculptor of the surrealist movement. He died in Paris as a result of a prolonged illness. National Deaf History Month is celebrated in April. Washington, D.C.’s deaf history is rich, being the home of Gallaudet University, “the global leader in education for deaf & hard of hearing students,” since 1864. The university, originally known as the Columbia Institution for the Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb and Blind, was led for 46 years by President Edward Miner Gallaudet (1837-1917). His longstanding work with the deaf community followed the path cleared by his father, Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet (1787-1851). It was Thomas whom the school was renamed after in 1894. He had been the co-founder and premiere principal of the first permanent educational institution for deaf people in North America. Established in 1817, that learning center in Hartford, Connecticut, still exists as the American School for the Deaf. Edward Gallaudet is buried with his father at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford. However, Congressional Cemetery can lay claim to Edward’s grandfather – and Thomas’s father – merchant Peter Wallace Gallaudet (1756-1843). Peter did not work with the deaf as his descendants did. Yet he too was an advocate of education for people who faced challenges. In 1834, he formed a board of directors to run a manual labor school in D.C. that would have doubled as an orphanage. The facility was never built. Peter Gallaudet, who also fought at the Battle of Trenton in the Revolutionary War and once worked as George Washington’s secretary in Philadelphia, is buried at Range 72, Site 230. His tombstone no longer stands, but the plot is still marked by the tombstone of his daughter, Jane E. Gallaudet (1801-1835). They were transferred from a different cemetery in July 1860. This memorial is one of I like the most in Colón cemetery. It's the Japanese Community Memorial in the cemetery. And one of the newest in the necropolis. Built in 1964. Intended for the Japanese and their decendents in Cuba. It has different floors and no much room, but everyone fits. I'm from Chardon and had no idea that Chef Boyardee was interred at All Souls Cemetery until last year. Somehow his Cleveland connection escaped me period, maybe because canned pasta was anathema in my family. Either way, cemetery nerd me was stoked to learn that he was at the same cemetery in my hometown as my great grandma and other Catholic relatives. Ettore Boiardi was born in 1897 in Borgonovo Val Tidone, Italy. He arrived in Ellis Island in 1914, and worked his way up to head chef at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. In 1917 he moved to Cleveland and became the head chef at the Hotel Winton where he introduced a menu of Italian cuisine. Ettore (anglicanized as Hector) left to open his own restaurant in 1924, where patrons frequently asked for the recipe of his spaghetti so he started packaging and selling it in milk bottles. From there the rest was history, though he had to sell his products under the name "Chef Boy-Ar-Dee" because non-Italians couldn't pronounce his name. Boiardi was later awarded a Gold Star order of excellence from the United States War Department for supplying rations to Allied troops during WWII. Bishop Juan José Díaz de Espada y Fernández de Landa (1756 Arroyate, Álava province, Spain - Havana, Cuba 1832) Promoter among many reforms to better the life of the Cuban people in the 19th century, was the founder of a proper cemetery in Havana, Cuba. Cementerio General de la Habana. Best known as Espada cemetery. I won't go on because the story is a bit long... Originally, he was buried at Cementerio General de la Habana, but the necropolis had to be shut down and his remains transfered later to the new cemetery (Colón Cemetery).
