Not really one I’d usually post on the grid as the photo quality isn’t great but the light had all but faded and we were getting battered by a big old rain storm when we finally located this one under a yew tree. I guess it’s easy to overlook but this is one of the oldest, still legible headstones that I’ve seen in a Kentish churchyard and therefore worthy of a shout out. Thomas Gover was laid to rest in 1690 and it’s just amazing to me that we can still read the words that were carved into this stone atop his grave over 330 years later. Honestly, take a moment to cherish these headstones because we are exceptionally lucky to have them. In response to some of the well known horse adorned tombs in Highgate and Brompton cemeteries, I bring you Kent’s answer in the form of the Sanger tomb in Margate cemetery. John Sanger (1815-1889) was a circus owner (John Sanger and Sons) in which horses featured. Tent (or comb) graves in Ray Cemetery near Monterey, Tenn. in Putnam County. This kind of grave marker is common for the Cumberland Plateau, it can also be found in Northern Alabama and parts of Arkansas. Cemetery Saturday! My local chapter of the Association of Gravestone Studies had its meeting at the Shrewsbury Historical Society building this morning. Afterwards we wandered around Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury, MA. Located just behind the Congregational Church, the first know burials took place there soon after Shrewsbury was founded in 1727. It has seen continuous use since then and is still owned and maintained by the town. There are gravestones by many carvers there, and it makes for a lovely stroll! The most famous grave there is that of General Artemis Ward, the leader of the Massachusetts militia companies during the first few weeks of the Revolutionary War. Established in 1929, this well kept cemetery primarily serves the small agrarian community of Yuma and its surrounding area. I had a fun conversation with my partner Christie in the confines of this prairie graveyard about the process of pre-visualization. Which I personally define as being very mindful and aware prior to the moment of capture of what the final image will feel like and how you hope the viewer will respond. It involves interpreting a subject and its relationship with the mood of lighting to tell a story. Not just the story of “here is an brick entrance gate and a sign for a neatly plotted graveyard” but the story that you see in your head, the story that is your vision of the scene and not necessarily the actual reality that presents itself self so readily. It’s not unlike a painter who sets up their easel on a calm sunny beach and proceeds to paint a stormy and dramatic rendition of the shoreline. The artist still uses the subject elements that are inherent to the location but what they produce is not particularly close emotion wise to what was afoot the day they stood in the sand and put brush to canvas. Here’s the bottom line for me: I don’t consider holding a expensive computer to my eye and pushing a button to be art. The art in photography is everything on either side of that simple act. Choosing the angle of the shot, picking the right subject for the lighting available, pre visualizing what you want the final product to say and then making it happen in post production. Surname: McCarthy Cleaned: 27th April, 2024 This headstone belongs to my 2nd great uncle Francis “Frank” McCarthy and his wife Genevieve. Had to ask the cemetery office where he was buried. Glad to finally be back open and operational for 2024! A couple of weeks ago, before the buds were popping on the trees, we made a stop in Port Rowan, Ontario. Tucked away next to a residence, sits the very old (and kind of creepy) Port Royal Cemetery. This cemetery is noted for its United Empire Loyalist burials, but I wanted to see it because it's a final resting place for several veterans of the War of 1812. There's even a handy list on the sign! I searched hard for some of these vets, but many of the older stones are sadly degraded. I'm pretty sure I found some family members' headstones, but I don't think I ever discovered any of the actual vets. Although I was unable to dig up any ghost stories connected to this cemetery, Port Rowan itself seems to have a couple. That being said, if any cemetery were to have a resident ghost, this one should! There's a real sense of isolation here, although you might run into the odd birder. Some of the graves are set up on a rise and it feels as if they're looming over you. And the silence, broken only by the odd bird call, is unnerving. It was such an interesting place. I could have wandered there forever. The Drexler Angel at Cypress Lawn in Colma might not appear to be an Angel at all, at first glance as it has no wings. But if you look closely you can see this sculpture was one of those damaged by the 1906 earthquake. The wings were the most noteworthy loss (swipe to the last slide), but there are also missing toes and nicks from where it was completely toppled. “Mary Fitz Randolph ‘Randy’ Hobler died May 26, 2017, at the age of 94. She was a resident of Princeton, NJ, from 1945 until she moved to Stonebridge in Skillman, NJ, in 2004. She was co-author with Jeanne Silvester of “Princeton Trivia,” “On the Streets Where We Live,” and “The Present Day Club 100th Anniversary History.” She also wrote “On the Streets Where We Live Revisited” in 2003, a history of the Professional Roster, and many other historical articles. Mrs. Hobler, born in 1922, was raised in Bronxville, NY, the daughter of Howard and Mollie Fitz Randolph. She also lived in La Jolla, CA, for 10 years. Randy married Herbert W. Hobler (also raised in Bronxville) in 1944, when he was serving in the Army Air Corps. After the war, they settled in Princeton and raised four children. While her children were in elementary school, Randy volunteered at the YMCA, and when her husband founded the Princeton radio station Nassau Broadcasting Company (WHWH), she joined him there for 10 years as assistant treasurer of the board. In the 1970’s, she pursued a master’s degree in counseling at Rider University, graduating in 1975.
