Warren Conant Stetson was born on October 16, 1841, in Maine. He married Catherine Stetson in 1860 and had 11 children. Stetson was a lumberman and one of the founders of St. Anthony, MN, now Minneapolis. He built the first government dam at St. Anthony Falls and was chief of the Minneapolis Fire Department. A Monumental Folk Man Richard Alan Altman (1949-2009) Section 122 Lot 44807 Richard Altman was at one time the owner and operator of the venerable folk music store, Folklore Center, in Greenwich Village, New York. Altman was born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island, New York. At an early age, he was drawn to Greenwich Village, as many were in the Sixties and Seventies. In 1973, Altman took over the Folklore Center after its founder, Israel “Izzy” Young, decided to return to his homeland Sweden. According to an online blog, “For 10 bucks, [Altman] got the store and the inventory and all the debts, which he tried to pay off.” The Folklore Center and Fretted Instruments Shop had been founded by Young in 1957. It was a place where people could buy instruments, books, records, and other folk related materials. It was also a gathering place for the growing New York City folk music and poetry scenes, such as Bob Dylan, Peter Yarrow, Dave Van Ronk, Ted Berrigan, and many others. Dylan spent a lot of his time sitting in the back of the store listening to the records that came through the shop. He wrote a tribute song to the place, “Talkin Folklore Center”, and cited the time he spent there as a major influence in the development of his folk roots. Altman was also an excellent carpenter, a skilled guitar repairman, and a devoted father. For many years, he and a partner tried in vain to keep the Folklore Center open but rising Greenwich Village rents eventually saw its demise. Altman later took a civil service position with the NYCTA (now MTA), embracing his lifelong love of trains. His unique monument features a lyric from Dylan’s song, “Turn Turn Turn”, as well as an acoustic guitar and a New York City subway train.

Not really one I’d usually post on the grid as the photo quality isn’t great but the light had all but faded and we were getting battered by a big old rain storm when we finally located this one under a yew tree. I guess it’s easy to overlook but this is one of the oldest, still legible headstones that I’ve seen in a Kentish churchyard and therefore worthy of a shout out. Thomas Gover was laid to rest in 1690 and it’s just amazing to me that we can still read the words that were carved into this stone atop his grave over 330 years later. Honestly, take a moment to cherish these headstones because we are exceptionally lucky to have them. Well, here it is! The special tree-stump tombstone I was looking for in Marion, Indiana during the solar eclipse on April 8. It may not look like anything special from the front where nothing but fern fronds and a calla lily are featured, symbols commonly found on these type of monuments, but the back side holds something special—a heron. • While I’ve seen countless herons on grave markers, this is the only heron I’ve ever seen on a tree-stump monument, and it may actually be the oldest stone I’ve found with a heron displayed. Normally when I find one it’s on a modern marker, and oddly enough, while I was searching the cemetery for this particular stone and struggling to locate it I exclaimed to my husband at one point, “Where is this heron?!” and then rounded the corner only to look right at a heron on a new stone. 😆 I was like, “Yea, I see you, Universe. You always got jokes.” • Research into herons took me all over the place, and regardless of all the research done I still don’t feel confident speaking to what this heron is likely representing for the Peters family. I have only a theory. It’s a rare and interesting symbolic choice for people of their time. I hope you’ll feel free to share any of your thoughts on herons with me in the comments! I can absolutely say, though, that without a shadow of a doubt this is not a Woodmen of the World stone. Mr. Peters died two months and one day before the organization was created. • Samuel S. Peters(1830-1890) was a lifelong Indiana resident who kept a farm. He rests here next to his wife, Cynthia(1837-1931), at Estates of Serenity Cemetery(a.k.a. {{In continuation of my last post: Lulu was the daughter of photographer CF Schroeder.}} After years of poor health, seventeen year old Lulu Schroeder was finally doing better. So much so that she was visiting friends in De Pere for a few days in 1885. She spent what was surely nothing short of a splendid summer evening out boating with friends on Wednesday, August 19th. As they floated along, Lulu collected water lilies. Enamoured with their beauty, she casually remarked: “Girls, when I die I want water lilies scattered over me.” The very next morning, Lulu became violently ill. She succumbed to spinal meningitis by 11 o’clock Thursday night, and died on August 20th, 1885. Lulu’s funeral was conducted from her family’s home in Green Bay on Sunday, and the newspaper said it was one of the largest ever held in the city. The Schroeder house was completely filled and mourners assembled in the surrounding neighborhood streets. Friends and family passed through the house in a long line to view the loved face for the last time. Six ladies and six gentlemen served as her pall-bearers, all bore water lilies. Forty carriages comprised the procession to Woodlawn Cemetery, and a great many more were also on foot- including 150+ members of the local Good Templars Lodge, of which Lulu was an officer. They all had mourning badges and many carried water lilies as well. There was a great profusion of flowers at the graveside. In addition to a Baptist Minister, the Good Templars performed a memorial service, which included a reading of the Resolution of Condolence they had passed in Lulu’s honor. Before her grave was filled, many water lilies- cast by shocked and sorrowful hands- were scattered over Lulu… just as she had hauntingly requested four days earlier. She was laid to rest with her little brother Frederick who died in 1874, and their parents would join them in the family plot about 35 years later. Lulu may have had a different headstone originally, but today the four Schroeders share a modern looking family monument, with matching blocky footstone markers for each. ♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡♡

The mausoleum was finished in 1909. Wandering through cemeteries often offers accidental history lessons: while I have always enjoyed the Gothic chapel at Brookside Memorial Park, erected in the mid-1930s with stones gathered from the former fire-destroyed Presbyterian Church on Main Street downtown, I stumbled upon Billy D. Wade. A story of hard-fought, gasoline-tinged record breaking and short-lived glory, faulty products and tragedy: sports, industry, and calamity. "In 1963 he drove Cotton Owens' Dodge in 29 of 31 NASCAR races. His results were good enough to win the 1963 Rookie of the Year award of the Grand National Series, also finishing in 16th place in the drivers championship. In 1964, for a four-race swing through New Jersey and New York, Wade posted four victories, three poles and an average starting spot of 1.5. During the four races that he won, Wade led 55 percent of the laps run. It truly was a remarkable streak. No one had ever won four consecutive premier series before and to this day, no one has won their first four consecutively. In 1965, Billy Wade died of internal injuries in a crash during a tire test session for Goodyear at Daytona International Speedway when a right-front tire failure sent his Moore-owned Mercury into the wall. He was said to be earning $200 per day to help in the development of tire inner liners.
