I really liked being able to spread it out and not rushing around on the day of, especially when we were sniffly ❤️ Given the neurodivergence of our household it's also nice to not have a massive amount of stimulation and excitement all in one day. Holidays are always hard for our little neurodivergent household. I definitely disconnect from social requirements as much as I can to make it easier. I think this year was one of our best though! We don’t decorate or put up a tree... it bothers both Kala and me to have such a big change. This is the first year no one gave us crap about that, which was amazing! We didn’t go traditional with presents for Kala either. Instead, we thought about what would make her happy outside of just a moment. We settled on giving her more control over her environment. We had some light switches moved down to her level! We also had an outlet connected to a low switch that we can plug things in for her to control... currently, that is her star machine. We also requested gifts from the grandparents that help make the light switches even more magical. So her walls are covered with her favorite characters, all at her level, from Grandma. Then she has a new boatload of magnets from Grammy and Poppo for a new magnetic board, also on the wall. To me, it looks like a little cartoon control center in her room now. She loves it! She spent Christmas flipping her light off and on in her playroom. She would not let me get it on camera though... so I left her alone and went for a run 😏 while Amanda did some Christmas canning (I can NOT be at home when the pressure canner is going). Yahoo!! We can do this!! We can do and get through the after-holiday rush or burnout that we may all be feeling today as we head into work or other priority...LOL. I hope you all had an amazing Christmas with all your friends and family. I had a lovely, relaxing, low-key Christmas and I'm so here for every minute of that. Darren and I went to my sister-in-law, Lora house for a yummy lunch and got to spend time with my handsome nephew, Tanner who is shown in between us (obviously) 😀😆😆😆 Then on Christmas Eve my daughter Carson and her boyfriend came over. I made my homemade taco seasoning for good old fashioned tacos, from scratch Spanish rice, veggies, meat, cheese, and crackers with lots of chocolate, haha. I always ask my kids what they want for Christmas dinner and this year it was easy peasy. I'm missing Collin and Schyler from the scene. They are always in my hearts and hopefully one day we can all reunite. Christmas day was a chill, relaxing and let my body recover from all the previous days events day. For people who don't struggle with chronic pain or illness may not understand how the simplest of things can make us just absolutely exhausted. I now have to get ready for work and everything is pins and needles in my body and it just throbs. I am tough and will get through this day and you will too! We got this. I can't believe I forgot to get any pictures of my daughter and us celebrating haha. I guess we were just zooming into the moment, I guess. Last night’s celebration was a luxury I didn’t know I needed. In the theme of doing whatever we want for the holidays, our Christmas Eve was pretty special. I lounged around ALL day. Because I’m dog sitting, I arrived later than usual to a meal that was waiting for me. I made quiche, the kids made lasagna soup, and the in-laws made tamales. It was a hodge-podge mash-up of meals that worked surprisingly well together. From the moment I arrived, the kids served me. I sat back and let them. I enjoyed myself. There was no stress, no worry, no rush. Just laughter, love, and connection. I thought to myself, “This was a luxury my mom didn’t get to experience.” She was always at the helm, pulling all the strings, making the majority of the meal, and doing all the things. I never once observed her pausing to take a breath and really enjoy the celebration. Reading this now, I see that’s as much a reflection on me as a child as it is on her as a mother. I felt very privileged and, if I’m honest, a bit young to be honored in such a way. I thanked the kids several times over, and their reply was, “You do it for us all the time.” Truth. What goes around comes around—if we allow it. The goodness is available for the taking if we can relax enough to let it in. That means loosening the grip of control, not requiring things to go only a certain way, and opening to new traditions that better serve the heart, mind, and spirit. If my mother was here, you better believe I’d be serving her, honoring her, and thanking her. And not just because she’s a “senior,” but because she deserves it. Mac 'n' cheese with frazzled leeks In the interests of not being frazzled yourself, try this ridiculously easy one pot wonder. All the components of a traditional cheese sauce chucked in the oven, no dutiful stirring necessary. Serves 2 adults + 2 tots Prep 15 minutes Cook 40 minutes Ingredients 1 cup macaroni pasta 1 cup boiled water 1 cup milk 1 tablespoon butter 2 tablespoons plain flour 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 3 large handfuls grated mature cheddar 1 leek Handful breadcrumbs Handful 'bacon' salad sprinkles 2 teaspoons dried thyme or rosemary Drizzle olive oil Directions Preheat oven to 200°C. Throw the pasta, water, milk, butter, flour, mustard and cheese in a large oven dish. Stir well, then bake for 20 minutes until the pasta is starting to soften. Meanwhile chop the leek into rounds. Remove the pasta from the oven, stir well and layer the leek over the top. Sprinkle over the breadcrumbs, bacon sprinkles, herbs and drizzle lightly in olive oil. Return to the oven for another 20 minutes until bubbling and golden. This year I used the Dalle-3 Artificial Intelligence platform to help me develop the artwork and actual covers for all of the @cabin.chill Christmas releases just to see how far I could push it. Christmas music, while usually sung in groups or by carolers or church goers, interestingly has always felt to me very close and personal. It’s almost like a soundtrack running behind us as our Christmas unfolds in front of us baking cookies, buying presents, decorating trees, and addressing cards. Songs playing in the background while seeing lost friends, slipping into old family roles, or nervously marching into new ones. All of these real life Hallmark scenes create emotions that we rarely share and so deserve some music to accompany our inner lives in a way that speaks to us or comforts us. I know so many people do not have the luxury of seeing our loved ones during the holiday, sometimes because of circumstance, sometimes because cause of loss. I have always gravitated to the sound of sentimental Christmas music to help me smooth the longing and comfort my soul. As I was trying to find a way to easily help a stranger discover the music we make in Cabin Chill I considered how brief a time I would be given on stranger’s phones as they busily scroll through their feeds. I thought an image that might tell a story quickly was my best shot. I imagined an astronaut so far from home, in an outpost on the moon taking the time to set up a tree and hang up Christmas lights that no one would ever see. Putting tired feet up in a chair in his moon cabin, while he is listening to this music in the quiet distance of space to feel connected to humanity on Earth in the distance. Here’s how to release stress chemicals quickly at a time of year where we face many stress and anxiety inducing situations. Your body responds to the environment around you and if that environment feels stressful, it may trigger your stress response: Cortisol will flood the brain. This increases how we use glucose. Our body is helping us, by having enough sugar available for the energy we are about to need. Which increases our heart rate and blood pressure. This makes us irritable. You will breathe fast and shallow, increasing the amount of Co2 in your blood. It’s there to relax muscles and airway passages so you can get more oxygen around your body. If you don’t need it, you have an imbalance of Co2 and oxygen in your body making you feel tired. So how do you get rid of these chemicals quickly? To lower heart rate, decrease Co2, increase oxygen and clam the stress response follow these steps. - Take a big breath. Then take another one straight away – a short sharp one. This expands the capillaries in your lungs to get to where the Co2 is. - Breathe out long and slow. This is to expel as much Co2 as possible. - After doing 5 of these, start box breathing in for 5 seconds, out for 5 seconds. This reduces your heart rate. - Cross your arms and hug yourself. This is self-soothing; it tells your body you are safe. - Rest. Your body gave you the chemicals to perform and react. It now needs something in return. It needs to restore with rest, good food and good sleep.
