This painting started life as a #Photoshop #digitalpainting, initially as a preparatory study for a large-scale commission for a 2008 London #skyline. The Photoshop painting was then printed as a C-Type and mounted onto aluminium. I have now decided to use it for the foundation of an updated 2023 skyline painting. I started using #adobe #photoshop in the late 1990s ( version 7 I think ) and over the decades I have ignored #Lightroom. Today I installed it, and there is one feature that is so good...camera tethering. My #dlsr connects via USB and I can take photographs directly into the software in real time, no more messing with SD and CF cards and the results are instant, I have a 10-22mm lens so focusing can be a problem - I can quickly see the results and make adjustments to settings......I can't believe I have denied myself this process for so long. . . #photography #art #artdocumentation #paintingoncopper #copperpainting #fineart #miniaturepainting #painting #christopherfarrell #farrellart #urbanart #artsetup

#wip: Oil and Acrylic on Zinc Panel, 2023, 18.5x25cm, I have been working on this small painting today. I am exploring the creation of an imagined urban space with layering of gestures that are spatially locked in place with lines. The base layers of the painting are painted with acrylics and I have used oil paint to achieve the gradients and the semi-transparent top layers. The painting support is a Zinc panel, it's not the usual support for painting, but artists ( Corot, Vernet, and Bonvin ) have used Zinc panels since the early 19th Century. #wip I have been working on this epic 26-metre wide #Photoshop painting over the last few weeks. It is the base layer for a proposed commission which was rejected by the client, I am carrying on with it anyway as I have put in around 90hrs developing it and it would be a shame to archive it. #WIP - In over thirty years of painting, I have never really explored the colour black. It was always looked upon negatively at art school ( an impressionist thing, I guess ) and dismissed as a colour killer. Black was widely used during the Italian Renaissance period as a means to achieve great tonal perfection. I think it is about time I looked into it. I am amazed. One of my student paintings from my time at @royalacademyschools (1993/97) was selected and won the Young Artist of the Year Hunting Prize 1997, it is part of @jerwoodcollection 'The work is one of a number of semi-industrial landscapes he painted from his imagination at the Royal Academy Schools, where he undertook a post-graduate diploma in painting (1994–1997).
