It may not be time to elect our next federal leader just yet, but the polls are already showing that Poilievre's Conservative Party is gunning ahead. This spells trouble for both people and planet. With their track record of prioritizing industry interests over environmental protection, we're facing a worsening of climate crises. But, people who want real action and climate-based solutions are in the MAJORITY. We just need to speak up (with our votes) so we can outcompete the oil and gas industry's bottomless pockets that create puppets out of our "leaders". People-powered change is how we solve this. Every action matters. #ClimateAction #Demandchange Source: Seth, Klein; National Observer . . . #CDNPoli #ClimateActionCanada #CanadianEnvironment #GreenCanada #ClimateChangeCanada #SustainableCanada #Toronto #Vancouver #Ottawa #themoreyouknow #Canada

🚨🛑 Heading outdoors for a winter adventure? Due to warm temperatures and concerns over thin ice this year, many Canadian communities had to contend with much shorter snowmobiling and ice fishing seasons. For example, in New Brunswick, the province warned that all ice fishing shacks needed be removed by March 3, about one month earlier than normal. To make matters more difficult, a rainstorm then left many ice shacks stranded on the lakes ("Sudden thaw left some N.B. fishers scrambling to get shacks off the ice," CBC News https://ow.ly/ApWv50QVGBz). The story was similar in many other parts of Canada. Warmer winters across Canada mean lakes and rivers are more often freezing later and melting sooner, affecting everything from essential winter roads to ice skating. These changes highlight the importance of adapting to a changing climate. You can learn more about how climate change is likely to affect these important activities on ClimateData.ca: 🏒 Read our blog post on climate change and outdoor skating rinks: https://ow.ly/kwwx50QVGBy ❄️🛣️ Read our case study on winter roads: https://ow.ly/ski950QVGBA. #ClimateChangeCanada #WinterSports #Safety

What does climate change mean for winter sports like cross-country skiing? ClimateData.ca, a project supported by Environment and Climate Change Canada, shows that Canada is experiencing climate change at nearly twice the global average rate, with our winters warming faster than any other season. Use ClimateData.ca’s Explore by Location page to see how these trends are expected to continue in the future. https://ow.ly/obuq50QxTMl These changes are not just statistics; they're a call to action. The cross-country ski community is deeply connected to our winter landscapes and has been impacted by the changing winters in Canada. Lower winter temperatures provide consistent and safe surfaces for high-performance cross-country skiers, but these temperatures are harder to find than they were when the first Olympic Winter Games began in 1924. It is crucial we work together to address these challenges and prepare for the future to save the sports we love. #ClimateChangeCanada #WinterSports #SustainableSkiing #ProtectourWinters

Will it be a warmer winter this year? According to @environnementcan’s January to March Seasonal Forecast, all of Canada is likely to be warmer on average than the 1991-2020 normal. Some regions on the east and west coasts, as well as northern Ontario, have a 90% chance or more of experiencing warmer than normal winter temperatures this season. The darker the red on the map, the more likely it is to be warmer than the 1991-2020 average. Seasonal forecasts describe how the upcoming three-month period may differ from average values observed for the same period in the recent past. They are similar to weather forecasts in that they predict specific near-future conditions, but differ in that they represent the larger global climate system over a period of months. Seasonal forecasts therefore bridge a critical gap between short-term weather forecasts used for immediate operational decisions and longer-term climate model projections used to plan for and adapt to changing climate risks well into the future. Learn more about how to interpret seasonal forecasts with @environnementcan’s User guide for seasonal forecasts (https://ow.ly/w78450QtyVs), then have a closer look at the specific numbers for your community here: Seasonal forecasts for Canada https://ow.ly/c6zE50QtyVt #ClimateChangeCanada #WinterSports #EnvironmentandClimateChangeCanada

🔦Science Spotlight: Tales from the Trees Trees act as living history books, adding new rings each year. Each tree ring is made of light-coloured earlywood from spring and early-summer growth, and the dark latewood from the late-summer and fall. Trees grow quickly if there is enough light, water, and at the right temperature. Good years of growth are marked by wider rings, whereas poorer years of growth have narrower rings. Try This at Home: You will need: yarn (light brown, dark brown, and black); scissors; paper; white glue; and markers. 1. Make a small circle of dark brown yarn in the middle of your background paper. This is the pith of your tree. Cut the yarn, and glue it to the background page. 2. Make a circle of light brown yarn around the dark brown pith in the middle of your paper and glue it to the page. Make a circle of dark brown around the light brown and glue it down. 3. One tree ring has a light ring and a dark ring. Alternate light brown and dark brown circles to make tree rings on your paper. If it was a good spring of growth, make more than one circle of light brown yarn. 4. FIRE! Not every fire kills a tree! Sometimes, only part of the tree is injured or killed. Use a short piece of black yarn to make your fire scar – this is the spot where the tree burned. Don’t worry, it survived this fire! 5. Finishing it off: Draw a circle in green around your tree cookie. This is the living part of the tree: the cambium. Use markers and dark brown yarn to make the bark of your tree. Bark is the outermost layer of a tree. 🔦Science Spotlight: Getting to the Core of Climate Change: A Look at How Refrigerants Are Affecting Our Environment through Ice Cores Refrigerators work by pulling heat away from the inside and absorbing it into a refrigerant. Refrigerant is a chemical that helps carry away the hot air leaving in the fridge nice cool air. For the most of its life, this special substance is contained in the tubes at the back of your fridge. But it can sometimes leak especially if a device is not disposed of properly. Try This at Home: When it is time to clean under the fridge, ask an adult to let you take a look at the back. Some will have coils attached to the back, which contain HCFCs or HFCs. Most of new fridges will have the coils covered, but they will have a fan that blows hot air away from the fridge; this is the heat that is removed from the inside! Our atmosphere moves air between lots of spaces through convection currents that is a natural process of heat transfer. To understand how these currents work, try placing a coloured ice cube on top of warm water in a clean container and watch how the colour moves through the water. This shows that air containing pollutants does not stay in one place, these pollutants travel with the air as it moves and changes temperature. The climate crisis is intensifying, and all levels of education have critical roles to play in leading the cultural shift to equitable, just and sustainable forms of living on the Earth. This project supports Climate Change Education in pre-service and in-service teacher education across Canada through consultations, webinars, online courses, grants and resources. Join us to activate and accelerate CCE across the country! This project aims to support and accelerate Climate Change Education (CCE) in pre-service and in-service teacher education across Canada. Educators at all levels, from Kindergarten to Higher education, are well-positioned to lead the cultural shifts needed for equitable, just and sustainable forms of living on the Earth. The ACDE’s Accord on Education for a Sustainable Future (2022) clarifies that Canadian teacher education programs have a responsibility to support educators’ professional learning in CCE, for both those studying to be teachers and for those already in the teaching profession. Young people continue to organize for improved quality and quantity of climate change education internationally (UNESCO, 2022, Youth Adaptation Forum - Bonn, 2023) and within Canada (Climate Education Reform BC, 2021, Fridays for Future news, 2019). With the help of Environment and Climate Change Canada, this two-year project begins to provide support to develop and deepen Climate Change Education in teacher education across Canada. Each of the five program components will develop and/or enhance professional learning opportunities for preservice teachers (those training to be teachers), faculty members in faculties of education, as well as in-service (K-12) teachers (those already certified to teach). Through organizing consultations, webinars, online courses, as well as making grants and resources readily available, this project aspires to have multiple components of CCE and Environmental & Sustainability Education available in all Canadian faculties of education for all educators to help address the climate crisis. #climatechange #climatechangecanada #TeachereducationinCanada #climatechangeducationinteachereducation

Let's talk about our Nature-Smart Climate Solutions Program. This program is funded by Environment and Climate Change Canada's Nature Smart Climate Solutions Fund, which was created to help Canada reach its emissions reduction targets. With the funding OLTA receives from this program, we work with land trusts on projects that store carbon, while conserving wildlife and their habitats. Rich, healthy ecosystems are one of the best tools we have to reduce our emissions, because they draw down carbon from the atmosphere and store it. Places with more biodiversity also tend to store more carbon, so when land trusts work to conserve land, they're benefitting wildlife and the climate.
