A first batch of pics from 2023 on a trip to Holland, MI - a town worth the drive through Chicago/Indiana/Michigan traffic. These were all taken at the Holland State Park. There is so much to explore in just that little area. The weather when we went wasn't too bad but as you'll see in pic number 2, the area got hit pretty good w/ smoke from wildfires in Canada. It's surreal to see people chilling on the beach as smoke blankets the entire beach. Even weirder to see people taking their speedboats out on Lake Michigan when you could barely see. Pics 1 & 4 of the batch used the miniature filter on the Canon. The 1st pic is of the old Holland lighthouse. #Holland #Michigan #beach #HollandStatePark #HollandStateBeach #lighthouse #miniaturefilter #Canon #CanonM50 #mirrorlessphotography #Canadawildfire #boats

A round-up of the last few weeks in wildfire news across Canada. Looks like we are all anticipating a difficult season ahead. Alberta and BC are already dealing with wildfires; however, with that in the news, we are also starting to see lots of movement in terms of union action and advocacy. Some politicians are trying to get ahead of the curve, others seem to have their heads in the sand. Big shoutout to those working towards advocating for your peers and your communities! Our wildfire team is working with @selkirkcollege and Agrofor Ventures on a Fuel Management Prescription within the Skattebo Research Forest, Glade BC. It's also supported by @promacequipment, a BC company, who initially provided the mulcher as a demo! It has been instrumental for the duration of this project. Because this project is within Selkirk College's Education Forest we have an opportunity to trial alternative fuel management methods for research purposes, including mastication to remove the ladder fuels. Fuel Management prescriptions (FMPs) reduce the potential for a continuous crown fire by reducing ladder fuels and also improve fire suppression efforts and firefighter safety by providing a defensible stand to work from. Until March, a 1.5 km stretch of the Skattebo Reach trail will be closed to the public from Monday - Thursday during daylight hours. Please respect signage for your safety. . . . . . #CastlegarBC #CabinWorks #BCWildfire #CanadaWildfire #EducationalForest #WildfirePrevention #GetFireSmart #FuelMitigation #Wildfire #FuelManagement @cdn.wildfire.network

Fire has always existed on our landscape. But after decades of suppression these fires have the potential to become catastrophic and are the fires we have grown to fear in our communities. It's time to change our relationship with fire, to reintroduce fire to our landscapes, to improve the health of our forests and keep our communities safe. #DYK ❤️‍🩹February 1, 2024, marks the 21st anniversary of the U.S. space shuttle Columbia disaster. While returning to Earth from an orbital mission, the ship broke up catastrophically at an altitude of about 40 miles over Texas, killing all seven crew members. While we take time to honor these brave folks, let us also remember the thousands of people who came together to search for disaster remains. Did you know employees from the Burns Interagency Fire Zone supported the Columbia shuttle recovery mission? Our staff were among those who spent weeks combing the east Texas landscape to find as much of the shuttle and crew as possible. It’s common practice in the BIFZ organization to help where help is needed. We regularly travel to other parts of Oregon, and many other states to bolster their fire suppression and prescribed fire programs. Four BIFZ employees just went to Alabama in December! We’ve even sent staff to help with natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina, and international emergencies like the Australian wildfires in 2020 and Canadian wildfires in 2023. Off-district assignments give staff the opportunity to experience new environments, work with different vegetation types and weather conditions, meet new people and develop working relationships, practice skills in other positions or leadership roles, and learn about equipment and tools not regularly used in Harney County. 📷 Kenny Peasley & Eli Shorey, BIFZ Various pictures from assignments in Alaska and Canada. #burnsinteragencyfirezone #notyourordinaryjob #canadawildfire #australiafires

A new study, "Long-term mortality burden trends attributed to black carbon and PM25 from wildfire emissions across the continental USA from 2000 to 2020: a deep learning modelling study," examined the impact of wildfires in the western United States and Canada. The study concluded that wildfires originating in these regions have erased air quality gains over the past two decades and caused an increase in premature deaths in fire-prone areas and downwind regions, primarily in the western U.S. #airkacare #natureinnews #envirovigyan #unitedstates #canada #canadawildfire #unitedstatesofamerica #wildfires #climateaction #firefighting #wildfire #climatechangeisreal #climatecrisis #drought #fires #fireservice #climateemergency #floods #firesafety #wildfires #forestfire #airquality #bushfire #californiafires #wildlandfirefighter #fireseason #calfire #wildlandfire

Are you aware of Indigenous perspectives on wildfires? Despite the Indigenous being on the land longer than we have, their perspectives are often ignored in the media and the general public. In order to ensure that wildfire management procedures are carried out with efficiency and inclusion of diverse backgrounds, it is important to integrate the vast Indigenous knowledge on ecosystems and fire control. #environmentallyfriendly #wildlife #wildfires #wildfireseason #canadawildfire #ecosystems #environment @cosphereproject

What do you know about managing wildfire risk to communities? According to the SWCA, an organization committed to overcoming challenges with wildfires and other environmental conflicts, there are four ways we can be mitigate wildfire risk to communities: be ready for any potential wildfires, respond to them in a way that ensures maximum community safety, implement proper recovery/rehabilitation procedures, and recover affected ecosystems. Communities must make sure that they are clear on how to proceed with all four areas of action in order to maximize their safety in the case of a wildfire. #environmentallyfriendly #wildlife #wildfires #wildfireseason #canadawildfire #ecosystems #environment @cosphereproject

In Canada this year the annual wildfire season was the worst on record by a huge margin. The wildfire season was declared over in September but there are still some large fires burning, which have no end in sight. The two graphs shown display the amount of emissions released and total area burned. Both you can see have demolished the previous records in Canada. 2023 was a new level of apocalyptic fire season. Lori Daniels, a professor in the department of forest and conservation sciences at the University of British Columbia said "These are the types of fires that I think will be ecosystem changing. It will take decades to centuries for those ecosystems to recover, if they recover, given the confounding influence of climate change." What was the reason behind this? As we all know by now, 2023 has been (and still is) very hot. Canada was hot and dry at record levels, but interestingly Alaska was wet and had barely any fires in 2023. The reason for Canada's suffering and Alaska's dampness lasting so long was because the climate didn't shift over the summer. A normal weather system moves and changes but the North American weather systems were very static for some reason. This kept Canada hot and Alaska cool. These are the kind of terrifying outcomes that we somehow need to predict and prepare for, all while desperately trying to solve the root causes. And while heels are dragged over such issues, everyone and everything will suffer. Data sourced from CBC News. #canada #canadawildfire #wildfire #alaska #climatechange #arcticnews #arctic #cbcnews
